<r>These days, I treat alignment as "cosmic sides" that are more like "teams" than like fundamental concepts that define morality or how the universe works.<br/> <br/> I tend to prefer a law/chaos scheme without good/evil. I've been toying with the idea of a domination/freedom scheme, which would be...

<r>I allow the players to decide, but I try to encourage running without a critical hit system. If we do use a critical hit system, a natural 20 gives maximum damage (i.e. no need to roll damage). That max damage represents you landing your "best shot."<br/> _________________<br/> <URL url="http://w...

Re: Surprise alternative
I went to a d% check that was based on the AD&D surprise ratios. Eventually that morphed into just using the d6-based approach. When using a round with segments, I use the AD&D rules as written. When using a round without segments, I use a variant that still allows for multiple surprise actions, in ...

Necropolis was cool, too. I thought Lost City of Barakus was pretty nice, as well.

Re: xp
I use XP for treasure. The bulk (75%-80%) of the PCs' XP comes from treasure, with the balance coming from monsters. I find this works fine. Typically, the PCs hoard their treasure, but it also gets used up on stuff like temple donations (often for healing), research, buying buildings, keeping NPCs ...
