Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there
Look at the 1st-3rd printings of the PHB and you'll see that those "filler" spells aren't there. They were added in the 4th printing and on for exactly that reason, to fill up the list so that they had the same amount of spells that wizards have. True. My table doesn't use those filler sp...

Re: Castle Keepers Guide
Both Toolbox books are pretty fantastic. As is the 1e DMG. I find the Gygaxian Fantasy series helpful at times, too. But yeah, T1Hound, the CKG is a pretty good resource.

Re: Addicted to Megadungeons
Admitting you have a problem is the first step man...good job! :D I like megadungeons, but I can't say "addicted." I have all the classic D&D/AD&D ones (ToEE is probably my all-time favorite) and I really like Castle of the Mad Archmage (especially with CZ added to it). Megadungeon...

Re: Class and a Half
I think barbarian/half-fighter would work pretty well. There are some synergies that make it pretty nice. serl touched on Intimidate. Intimidate with a high AC from good armor makes the barbarian very "tanky" (pardon the MMO terminology!), especially since you won't lose hit points for the...

Re: Rogue Class Abilities
Yeah, I should have stated what the last three fellows said in their posts, and Omote in particular makes a good point. If it's a reasonable mundane or easy task - such as climbing an oak tree or descending a knotted rope - I wouldn't have a PC make a check. Just tell me what you're doing and contin...

Re: Rogue Class Abilities
Is there a game mechanism in C&C wherein the rogue gets a bonus in his class abilities attempts that other classes do not? In general, the only time level is added (except for generic saves) is when the class has the ability, even if the attribute is not Prime. That means that all rogues always...

Re: Spell Reversals
Keep in mind too that for every decision you make outside of the 'norm' as it were, you are going to have to carry that forward through the rest of the campaign which can build up into a LOT of paperwork and a pain in the arse to keep track of. This is the point I was getting at in my previous post...

Re: What is needed for a successful ‘high magic’ setting ??
Rgr, and I LOVE FR as a setting. Back in the day - 1e & early 2e (gray box and a few supplements mostly Moonshae, The North, and Savage Frontiers, and some in the Dale and Cormyr areas) - I played in and ran games in the setting. I absolutely agree, Lurker. Grey Box with the 1e and early 2e stu...

I got Terraforming Mars for Christmas. I've played it twice so far and both games played differently, an aspect that I really look for in boardgames. And my wife loves playing, too, which is nice! I really enjoy it.

Re: What is needed for a successful ‘high magic’ setting ??
Delve into any Forgotten Realms campaign setting for a good primer on high magic.
To me, high magic means multiple magic-users in every town, magic item ubiquity (and accessible at low levels), magic shops, magic schools, wizard battalions in armies...stuff like that.

Re: Spell Reversals
Slight tangent - Is there an official rule on reversed spells? Looking through the PHB, I could not find anything that spoke to it. Some systems state that the reverse has to be learned separately, while others state that once you know a spell you know its reverse. This might be one of those "C...

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Well, I don't post here that often - most of what I read is C&C - however, thanks to LD and others in the middle earth discussion a few weeks back, I have been reading The One Ring & Adventures in Middle Earth (the 5.e version of TOR). I'll say it is a great feel for the setting and some in...

Re: NOT buying new stuff is hard...
I'm not buying...much...but I agree it's hard. This time of year, our family has little rule that we can't buy things for ourselves starting October 1. So that helps with my buying. It is very addiction-like, but that makes me wonder. If my game(s) of choice were "dead systems," and I comp...

Welcome back, Snoring Rock. I've recently returned to C&C, too, from a hiatus. Almost the same thing as you - players wanted to try 5e out. Even though the ones who did left my group, we continued because we were enjoying it and because they had some investment in their characters. We're actuall...

Top Secret! Aergraith mentioned in the other games thread that Merle released a new version. I pulled out my old boxed set (which is in fabulous condition) for a re-read. For those that have this game, check out Darlene's rendering of Emma Peel (page 55) ~ awesome!!! 8-) We might have different ver...

Re: Mythical Companions vs. Book of Familiars?
I wondered the same thing so I asked Tim. Here is his response: Assuming you mean the C&C Mystical Companions, the Mystical Companions book is a revised, cleaned-up edition of the original Book of Familiars. It doesn't have any changes; the layout is cleaned up, it's in color, and all of the d2...

Mythical Companions vs. Book of Familiars?
I've tried looking but haven't had a whole lot of luck. Can someone give me a rundown on the differences between Mythical Companions and The Book of Familiars? Are there any? I only own the latter, but I was trying to discern if there are any differences with Mythical Companions or if it was just a ...

Re: 5th Edition
All the time it took to just to stat out some goblins is what drove me from PF to C&C. You really don't need ability scores to make a monster interesting. Add an extra attack bonus, mix in a class ability or two, maybe adjust AC or HP is all it takes. Yep, I can understand that. At first, when ...

Thanks for the replies. Looks like most people are pretty much like me - they have them (I'm missing the latter few, but have the early C&C releases) but they're not doing much other than borrowing from them. They caught my eye the other day and started thumbing through one (Nordica) and got ins...

Re: Anyone doing historical settings?
I'm going to start a caveman game set in a near-total ice age. Spells and such will be around, but they're not like usual casting... not intended for combat, anyway, without magic items. I think I'll allow sasquatch/yeti PCs. There was a neat concept for a video game earlier this year called Farcry...
