Religion in FRPG
It's been a while since I posted - I decided to return to school to get my Juris Doctorate (Yes, sometimes rules lawyers become real lawyers  ) Anyway, as some of you may know I run a decidedly medievalist campaign. To introduce a variety of ideas without starting too many arguments, I have res...

Loren Wiseman RIP 1951-2017
Game designer Loren Wiseman died on February 15. Loren Wiseman co-founded Game Designers' Workshop with Frank Chadwick, Rich Banner, and Marc Miller on June 22, 1973. Wiseman published Eagles (later published by Avalon Hill as Caesar's Legions), his first wargame, through Game Designers' Workshop in...

Hi Stephen! Go my Codex Nordica - thanks! The kickstarter says this was to be a hardcover - has that changed? No biggie if it did, I am just curious For the Thane ($49) level, the following additional swag was supposed to come but was missing * Digital copy of Codex Nordica * Exclusive adventure by ...

Re: Separate XP progression
C&C (like D&D before it) is not a game as much as it is a system to design a game. I use the unified level progression table from Pathfinder. Paizo has made their SRD available for free at http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/
Look under classes for the level progression table

Re: TLG 2013: What Would You Like To See?
The difference is, I'm comfortable knowing I'll get my money back. There is nothing on Kickstarter that makes the Kickstartee give any money accrued back. It has happened and the only thing that gets done is that company gets a bad name. I bet Guardians of Order wished they had Kickstarter back in ...

Re: TLG 2013: What Would You Like To See?
I have been lurking on this topic and wanted to put my 2cp in. Most OSR publishers are small press outfits which means they run on very tight margins. But even established companies like Steve Jackson Games or Far Future Enterprises or Reaper Miniatures have all missed deadlines on their kickstarter...

Re: Free LEGAL download of Life on a Mediaeval Barony
It's one of the more accessible sources on the feudal era - I have found it useful as a DM/CK since the 1970's when I first discovered it at my school library. I acquired a copy at a library sale many moons ago and highly recommend it.Treebore wrote:It is of surprisingly interesting reading.

The full text of "Life on a Mediaeval Barony" comes from the library of the University of Connecticut here: http://archive.org/details/lifeonmediaevalb00davi A great resource for players and CK's alike - it describes the basics of life in the feudal era from the noble, commoner and townsma...

Re: Secondary Skills for C&C (2e NWP)
Each secondary skill represents a broad number of things grouped together by category (e.g. agriculture, seamanship, carpentry, etc.) and costs a fixed number of slots to purchase. There are no ranks to keep track of - the characters either have the ability or they don't... Instead I'm thinking of ...

I have been using a homebrew setting for over 30 years and see no need to abandon it I own several published settings, though Greyhawk and Harn are my favorites and I have stolen ideas from both settings. The Arden setting for 1st edition C&S is still one of the best I've seen though. It forms t...

The alternate system given in the CKG is pretty good - I tweaked it a little for use in my own game but it plays fine as is too (I just brought it more into line with what the medievals believed about magic)

Re: NPC Monarchs/Elites- Powerful PC-level characters or not
Unless your PCs are going to engage his high and mightiness in single combat, their statistics don't matter. I treat your average city guard, page, yeoman, seminarian (ceremony spell prepared), apprentice wizard (read magic prepared), thief, etc. as a 1st level character Squires, journeymen wizards ...

Re: Under-utilized variants of common monsters
I always allow humanoids to develop class skills. Why can't a goblin be a 1-4th level assassin? or wizard? or cleric? I also like giving monsters the ability to ally with one another. Maybe a goblin tribe lives in the territory of an Ogre clan - the goblins pay tribute to the Ogres and in return the...

Re: Favorite Grunt Monsters?
I like goblins - I'm a traditionalist. I emphasize the sneakiness factor - ambushes from cover, traps, magic conjured up by goblin shamans or witch doctors. Attacking goblins on their own ground isn't so simple. Goblins are the ultimate irregular warriors, they strike and run. The take hosta...

The Trolls can't win. I'll complain if they don't put clarifications in the 5th printing, but if they do, I'll complain that I have to buy a new book. Poor guys. So buy the PDF for $15 - for the price of 2 "value meals" at the Windy's Arkansas Fried McBurger Emporium you have all the new ...
