Re: What box could this be in my mail??

NICE! Love the leather. So I ended up on your photobucket, looking at your shelves. Your collection is godlike. Thanks for putting photos online. My jealousy knows no bounds. Two questions. 1. Why so many copies of the Rules Cyclopedia? 2. What on earth is that digest sized copy of the basic redbox...

Re: Move and Attack - How about Attack and Move?

As long as the character they were attacking is no longer in the equation for whatever reason. Otherwise, the disengage rule probably comes into play. In such situations, I allow an attack at any point along the permitted movement distance. I just don't see a good reason to lock it down to (or disal...

Re: Initiative,movement and rpg's

So I was watching a 5E D&D DM run a game at a comic/rpg store and he used house rules that reminded me of classic D&D(house rules maybe?). I really like his jury rigged system a lot as it solved several issues I have always had with tabletop games. This is my take on his system and what it ...

Re: Secondary Skills & Adding Level to Checks

I've always made the call that you only add your level to attempts at non-class specific tasks if the task is justifiably within the skillset of the class. So, perhaps a rogue finds a trap and wants to camouflage it so that the next person is even less likely to see it. That seems properly roguish, ...

Re: Okay what gives.... Barbarians cant wear Leather Lamella

A barbarian is listed as being able to wear any armor. However, they do lose a some abilities if they wear armor that weights 25 lbs or more. Now this is easily changed if you don't like it. Some "fixes" include: 1. ignoring the restriction 2. making a list of armors that are exempt 3. ra...

Re: Casting in Combat or getting targetted while casting...

If you keep reading, it appears to me that sentence is referencing the actual details of the spell. In the declaration phase (before init is rolled), I only require (and the PHB in a following paragraph say MOST CK's require) that to cast a specific spell or not be declared, not all the details(tho...

Re: Casting in Combat or getting targetted while casting...

But to me, this is the only way that doesn't conflict with any of the printed references to casting. It conflicts with this statement in the PHB: A character who wishes to cast a spell announces his intention to the Castle Keeper during the character’s initiative turn. If you keep reading, it appea...

Re: Casting in Combat or getting targetted while casting...

My take has always been that the spell takes time. From just prior to init roll (declare) to the result of your init die. So the casting takes time and finishes on your turn. I've never viewed this method as instantaneous casting because it allows for interruption any time the caster is attacked pri...

Re: Avoiding numbers bloat.

1E had as the fighter's THACO or (number on the matrix) rapidly progressed beyond the maximum THACO that monsters had at about 16 hitdice In 1st Edition a 14th level fighter had a 7 to hit AC0. A 14 HD creature hit AC0 on an 8 . You are thinking of a different game. And that's just fighters, which ...

Re: Avoiding numbers bloat.

Just be aware, that while 5e limits pluses, it also limits AC. I just did a quick look through of the 5e MM and there are only a few things in there that have ACs of 20 or better and only one thing that went as high as AC 25. So, they did make a concerted effort to limit number bloat, but they did ...

Re: Avoiding numbers bloat.

We play 3d6 stats and are somewhat stingy with the magic items. That makes a huge difference. If your fighters all have 17-18STR strength and +3 swords, yeah, it's gonna be easy for Fighters to hit, but that's not the way the game was intended. So that's not really bloat since it's a groups choice t...

Re: HD derived from race

Not really fitting for above 1st level when considering HP in C&C. I could see it as a base HP then by class for subsequent levels. I was thinking the same thing. Unless somehow they have racial "advancement"? Like somehow they raise their Dwarf level up one? Otherwise, any advancemen...

Re: Avoiding numbers bloat.

One thing I really disliked about 1E and subsequently 2E, 3.X and even C&C is the bonus bloat that occurs with attributes, magic items, to hit progression and class features. For example: 10 th level fighter with 17 str, +3 sword would have +15 to hit (this is not even counting weapon specializ...

Re: Should clerics have a d10 hit die?

Hit die should be based on race instead of class. I was of this mind for a while too, and wouldn't freak out of someone wanted to play with such rules. But then I decided that since HP is an abstraction, not just meat (size/strength,etc) that it must come from somewhere else. I decided that somewhe...

Re: Should clerics have a d10 hit die?

I thought about this but then realized that no amount of training is ever going to allow a 3' tall 45 lb halfling to soak up the same punishment as a 6' tall 230 lb human and that HP do not properly describe near misses as that is covered by dexterity. Quite correct. Which is why Hit point don't re...

Who said they wouldn't be multi- or class-and-a-half? It comes down to defining the cleric, and its options, more specifically in the game world. General "cleric" as presented in the PHB is the general cleric in the PHB -- no changes. Add in some faith that gets fighter powers, and there'...

Re: Should clerics have a d10 hit die?

All clerics? No. Clerics of given faiths, or racial clerics (like a dwarf cleric), possibly. I do not see an elf cleric of the Lord of the Sliding Hand (a pacifist thief) having d10 HP but I would not mind the half-orc cleric of Foe-Crusher getting it. That is why I would define clerics by Order. A...

So I have to go toe to toe with monsters, cause the wizards and rogues are fucking hiding and b...

Re: Training to gain levels ~ do you enforce/use it?

I've used it some times and not used it others, depending on the group. Some don't like it or find it burdensome. But I've found it can improve the game when used properly. If you see it as just something the rules are forcing you to do, then shelve it. But in my games it has increased the pleasure ...

I got one off ebay for $9!! The other was a gift from a friend. I love those books. Super thin and just feel great (although the spines don't match). I was not in love with the glossy paper at first but now I like it. And they smell wonderful. :)
