Re: Siege w/o Challenge Ratings
I don’t. Everything is CL0. Granted you can add a CL if something is particularly difficult. But I call for more rolls than is necessary for C&C hence my use of CL 0. I like heroic PCs (heroic mind you, not super heroic like D&D).

Re: Siege w/o Challenge Ratings
I have been using just the CB for some time 12/18 with CL 0 since 2020. It does make the characters a bit more “heroic” but it hasn’t broken the game by any means. For context, my players are level 6 and don’t encounter many magic users. The magic user they did encounter almost killed them as my son...

Re: Weapon Expertise
The fighter from swords and wizardry has some nice features. In addition to their own version of CD, the fighter is also the only class which benefits in combat from a str mod higher than a plus one for weapon attack and damage and he has a parry bonus which imposes an attack penalty (based on his d...

Re: What happens when 5e players try Castles and Crusades.
Not sure what level your folks were playing at but regarding prime vs non prime rolls, I usually use the CB of 12/18 only. I don’t create a CL. As for making checks which slows the game down. I wasn’t there so I don’t know but the c&c design philosophy is “just say yes. And move on.” If your ran...

Re: Knight's Combat Dominance: How many rounds does it last?
Battle field dominance allows the knights to use inspire, embolden and demoralize simultaneously at level 8. Each ability lasts a number of rounds equal to the knights level. So, at level 8, battlefield dominance lasts for 8 rounds. BD can be used once per day. Additionally the night can use each ab...

Re: Weapon Expertise
Cleave is an advantage in the CKG. What I’ve done in my games, at level 1 I grant the fighter protect. Once per round if they are standing next to an ally who becomes the target of an opponent’s melee attack, the fighter may impose disadvantage (the concept from DnD 5e) against that opponents attack...

Re: Weapon Expertise
I may be missing something here, but CD has a built in limit. A level 4 fighter with cleave who is facing 10 goblins receives 2 attacks plus IF he kills a target one additional attack from cleave. 10-3=7 goblins remaining. Am I missing something? UPDATE: Oh, I get what is going on. IMO, the limit is...

Re: Weapon Expertise
Not conflating, that is my point. extra attack is a completely separate feature the fighter gains around level 10 or 11. Combat Dominance awards additional attacks against baddies of 1 HD. The number of CD attacks increases every fourth level. What I’m suggesting is to either increase the HD limit f...

Re: Weapon Expertise
I would stick with the progression of the feature as detailed in the PHB. I don’t have my books in front of me but I believe CD already awards extra attacks every third of fourth level. As no other class gets extra attacks, the features prescribed progression should be adequate.

Re: Weapon Expertise
Another thought, modify combat dominance. Instead of it only affecting 1HD creatures, allow it to affect creatures of HD equal to 1/2 the fighters level (so a level 6 fighter would gain extra attacks against creatures of HD3 or lower). Or, just give the fighter the extra attacks without restriction....

Re: Weapon Expertise
I recommend a few things here. First off I’m a long time human fighter player. Some ideas that aren’t game breaking and simultaneously give the fighter some versatility. 1. Throw them some extra advantages out of the CKG. 2. Borrow one or two class features from 5e. I particularly like to use protec...

Re: Expanded Classes
I’ve looked into it, but never executed on using the expanded classes. My players have been content to play RAW. We’ve added advantages because I love feats from dnd 3e, but thats all we use to “expand” the classes. That being said, I really want a rage feature for the cnc barbarian. I guess intimid...

Re: Primes and Class Abilities
There once was a thread where the troll lords themselves answered this question. I searched for it high and low but have yet to find it. The short answer is yes, class abilities can be treated as prime. That being said, you are free to play how you wish at your table.

Re: Weapon Specialization vs Fighting Style
I usually just award the fighter advantages from the CKG. A lot of the fighters power is dependent on the CK too. If the CK isn’t sending hd1 mooks at the party he is doing the fighter a disservice. I also award the fighter cleave early on so he gets some additional attacks that aren’t based on the ...

Re: Rogue BtH
I “monkey” with their Bth by awarding them expert weapons and emphasizing their use of backstab which awards a +4 bonus to attack. I also use 5e’s advantage/disadvantage which helps a lot without creating the need to retool RAW.

Re: Backstabbing During Melee
I was reading in a carcass crawler zine for OSE which discussed adjudication of back stab. Their approach was quite liberal. If the rogue can physically get behind the baddy, give them the bonus, no rolling needed. The reason behind such a shocking (to me) approach was that combat in and of itself i...

Re: Half-orcs: How often do have you seen them used as PCs?
Half orc is my wife’s race of choice. Best looking half orc I’ve ever met  my group back in the day never played humans, I always did because no one else ever played them and I wanted some aspect of our game grounded in reality so I made the “sacrifice” and played my favorite class/race hum...

Re: Finesse weapons
The decipher rpg for LOTR did this. They used agility (dex) for accuracy then str to modify damage. I wasn’t a fan. 3e also did this with their weapon finesse feat. Again, I wasn’t a fan. That being said, using dex to resolve attacks isnt going to make a huge difference. Depending on which stat bonu...

Re: Alternative to the SIEGE system
I'm working on what i call siege light. I use modern attribute bonuses (12+1, 14+2, etc), but only allow the pc to add 1/2 their level to rolls. I've also removed bth values and replaced it with the siege light roll.

Dont over think it. CnC is meant to be simple to engage in role playing not roll playing. I default to add the level in most cases. Just follow the rule of cool and move on.

Barbarians adding CON to AC
Has anyone allowed their barbarian PCs to add their CON to the AC? Has it disrupted the game balance? I know it can be done in DnD. I was thinking of allowing a barbarian to do so if they elect to wear no armor, so their CON bonus would be used in addition to their DEX bonus when modifying their AC.

I do 1 of 2 things. RAW or limit encumberance to the PCs STR score then tell the players they can only carry a number of items equal to their STR score. Keep it simple. Resource management shouldn't slow down a game. If you want that, go play settlers of catan.

Re: Castles & Crusades - Barbarian Intimidation
For another prespective, I allow intimidate to continue as long as the barbarian swings at the intimidated target (regardless if they hit or miss). Large bad guys aside a barbarian with a bearded axe does a lot of damage (especially with a high str) so foes tend to die quickly and I try to encourage...
