Re: Years of CK or DM/GM experience
Started playing the summer of '81. My mom bought me the Red Basic Set in September of that year for my birthday. I was always a fast reader and I would finish reading assignments in school and make little five room dungeons that my friends would go through at lunch. Made some of the jocks mad becaus...

Re: Fighter = Combat Dominance / Extra Attack
I've played Knights, Paladins, Fighters, and Rangers. They are not equal, and of them all Fighters suck. Do Fighters get to add CHA modifiers to their allies? Nope. Do they get to add +4 to saves versus fear to everyone within 10 feet, and be immune to fear themselves? Nope. Do they get to add thei...

Re: Fighter = Combat Dominance / Extra Attack
First off, I don't agree with the Op's assertion that Fighters are sub-standard when compared to other classes. With that said, one thing that I allow is additional combat maneuvers. Everyone can use these after they have a +1 BtH, but Fighters get the added benefit of being able to use more than on...

Re: Pathfinder After C&C
I was the Venture Lieutenant for PF in Cincinnati until 6 weeks ago (9/12/2015). I switched to C&C for a host of reasons. 1. Easy to play. 2. Easy to create encounters. 3. Game flows better. 4. No "rolls" for role playing. I could go on. All in all, C&C is a superior system for what I like . Pathfin...

Re: Notes "5" and "6" for Weapons Table
Hello I think a sleeve tangler was used by the police in Japan to entangle a samurai or anyone else wearing robes, the weapon was not used to cause injury but to detain them. if you google or wiki it there should be a picture somewhere. Cheers Imp It is listed as doing 1d10 damage. I'll google it, ...

Notes "5" and "6" for Weapons Table
In the 6th Printing PHB, there are two notes on the Weapons Table (pp62-63) that cause confusion for me: "5 This weapon is designed to disarm opponents. Anyone proficient in this weapon’s use can attempt to disarm an opponent as described in Combat Maneuvers but with a +3 to their roll. 6 This weapo...

Re: Prime Question
Half-elf would be a good choice, to take Intelligence as Prime. If I recall, half-elfs get some modifier for Charisma and you could make it your "half-Prime." What do you mean by Half Prime? +3 rather than a +6 Ah ok, I don't think I have ever played with Half primes A half-elf of Human lineage get...

Re: Saving throws for spells
Nobody really commented on the strategic component of this house rule. In fact because spells are 'less effective' I think it works well in my relatively 'low magic setting'; where most/half of encounters are with classed humanoids - a first level spell remains the same effectiveness (but may becom...

Re: Reduced Con and Hit Points
There is nothing in the C&C PHB regarding reducing HP just because CON is damaged or permanently drained away. ~O In that vein, there is nothing in the text description of "enhance attribute" (or its reverse) that says you apply the bonus of the newly raised (or lowered) attribute, but...it's only ...

Re: Reduced Con and Hit Points
I agree with Buttmonkey! It took 21 posts for me to get to write that!    I'm just asking how the average GM handles a situation like this. Let's say you have a character with a Con of 16 (Con Modifier +2) who is 5th level. He has 10 extra hit points because of his high Con. Now...

Re: Saving throws for spells
To the OP: using spell level instead of caster level should mimic the effect that you call "progressive" saving throws. I use this house rule as well because of the nature of "save or suck" spells. As always, though, I point out that I play a grittier game than most and certainly a lower magic game....

Re: How To Kill Monsters
The explanation was pointless because experienced players should be aware of how all that works already. Certainly if that has been an element of their experience in previous games. But inexperienced CK's may have just learned something. And, for what it's worth, based on the OP's point, I thought ...

Re: How To Kill Monsters
The hard part is that some things are kind of subtle but reflect experienced players, not really experienced characters. In my games as GM, most fighters have a primary weapon (usually slashing), a secondary weapon (usually bludgeoning), a bow or crossbow and several daggers. They have run into skel...

Re: Nice change of pace
I'm actually the Venture-Lieutenant for Pathfinder Society in my area. Shhhh! In my home game, we switched to C&C. From my perspective as a GM, it takes a lot less time to prepare encounters in C&C because of the streamlined game mechanics. For my players, we could run through 2-4 combats in ...

Re: Siege Engine & Use of Prime, Level, & Modifier
I have to think it's odd that while I run my games the way that Arduin does (in terms of this rule), I always considered it a "house rule". I think the multitude of examples in the CK section of the PHB illuminate that the intent of the rules is to have the level added in on most checks. I don't lik...

Re: Siege Engine & Use of Prime, Level, & Modifier
The only Attribute Checks that I allow level to be added are class abilities and saving throws. Everything else is straight up "siege engine". As the OP stated and I'm paraphrasing, "what difference does it make if a fighter is opening a stuck door. It's just as difficult for a 1st level guy as it i...

Secondary Skills
On the secondary skills chart (p320 CKG, table 18.1), the skills are rolled at 2d12 which would generate a bell curve with the peak at 13. Only problem, the skills are listed alphabetically. What I have been doing, is rolling a d6 and a d12 where odd numbers on the d6 are +0 to the d12 and even on t...

A couple of things on the morale/running away and capturing/interrogating issue. In terms of your criticizer, it seems he is saying that these things were handled by you in a way that he found unbelievable or unrealistic (yes, I hate using those words in a description of a fantasy RPG). Re: Favorite Critical Hit Systems?
I use a really simple modified double damage on a natural 20. The "modified" part is the first die is maxed automatically. So, a long sword would do 8 +d8. Strength, expert and magic bonuses are added twice. Bonuses from class abilities (weapon specialization, combat marauder, etc.) only get added o...

Re: Facing
I, as CK, change their facing on their initiative. It does not count against movement, and they turn to put the most advantageous situation in place. In a case where more than one "facing" is optimal, they can pick which way to face. I use the flank and rear attack bonuses as the criteria for decidi...

From AD&D, there was a facing diagram. I'll try to find it and upload it. I tried other more complex systems, but this gives a risk of hurting friends without slowing things down overmuch.Jyrdan Fairblade wrote:The only rule I used for ranged attacks that miss is that if you fire into a melee and roll a 1, you hit an ally.
