How long to pick a lock?

Here is a channel of an experienced lock picker. VERY complex locks to simple ones. Worth watching a few as a GM I think. https://www.youtube.com/c/lockpickinglawyer

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there

this is my intent, too, particularly on the arcane side—to have magic users know the spells they know, and be able to cast them at will depending on spell slots. As a DM I did that once about 30 years ago. Arcane casters soon become WAY overpowered and over shadowed all other classes easily. But if...

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there

Eh they could come in handy for some role playing... Spell lists can either be filled only with "useful" spells and we can all just assume magic users don't have for petty effects, or you can write to create a fuller world for them. I could see a rogue/illusionist using Double Treasure to cheat som...

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there

Different spells of the same level are not supposed to be the "same". I'm not sure you are communicating what you intended to... Complexity cannot be determined that easily. It is magic and unless you know the underlying "physics" you can only guess.

Re: Is there some advantage attacking in your underwear?

Has damage from a natural lightning strike ever been established anywhere? Assuming people avg 4.5 HP and knowing from 30 years of national weather service data that only 10% of people struck die then bolts probably do 1 maybe 2 points of damage. A positive strike maybe 2D4 if the result is an 8 ad...

That makes sense.

I think it might be possible for 4 people to grapple one character, but more likely I would use the overbearing rules in that case.
Yes, that would seem to have to be the activity it would devolve into based on the size of the combatants.

Re: Is there some advantage attacking in your underwear?

"Barbarian's" are depicted that way because when the Romans encountered them they didn't have much in the way of armor unless they got it from Romans they took it from. Same reason American Indians didn't have flintlocks but only bows when Europeans first fought them. There was no advantage to being...

serleran, you said in the beginning it was a range of touch. AD&D had it as touch also. Maybe a typo crept in during editing of a printing. Might want to check with the powers that be... Grandpa, I don't think anyone was suggesting adding levels to bonuses, but adding levels to abilities, like moving silently, hearing, etc. Not bonuses to saves or attack rolls.
Reread what was written. There was NO distinction made.

Re: The Murky Land of Attributes and Levels

Sure, if that's how you choose to read the rules. I am not that stupid. I personally allow all gained abilities whether race or class (or purchased during training) to gain level adjustment as I find this simpler. It does not make it "right." M'kay now I'm really confused as to how you play it as a...

That may be true now, with more recent printings of the PHB, but in the original (and at least the 2nd), the spell was listed with range: touch.
I don't know. I'm commenting on what the rule is now and several years ago. No idea what it was before that. ;)

You both make good points. I'm just trying to figure out how a 10th level elf fighter who has been adventuring in the woods for most of his career would not be better at moving silently in that wilderness than a 1st level elf fighter. The same way a 900 year old elf (no class level) who has been hu...

I only add levels for class abilities, saving throws and any that the rules say to. I don't see how being a 10th level wizard gives one a level bonus to fixing a wagon wheel I agree with that but what about something like an elf's move silently ability? Should the elf get better at this over time r...

This is true, but I still like giving all my PCs something useful to do. Attacking isn't "useful"???? I don't get that. There is no hard fast rule because too many variables. 5Es rule is too restrictive and probably not accurate for most situations. It might be a DISADVANTAGE to have another "help". The easiest way is to USE the Siege Engine mechanism. Simply analyse the situation and what YOU think would happen if a...

Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

I guess it comes down to how much "mystery" one might want. Also, if adding a "detect charm" you then need to define what, exactly, is a charm. Yes, in 1st Ed Charm was a spell type and was listed as part of the spell description. Handy. I guess one could look at those spells and directly transfer ...

Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

I don't recall a "detect charm" spell in either 1st or 2nd edition PHB, but that may be faulty memory. Detect Charm was a AD&D 1st Ed 2nd Level Cleric spell I think the "resist fire" spell was renamed in C&C -- protection from elements or something? Resist cold & fire were 1st and 2nd level cleric ...

It isn’t something I’ve thought about before, but I know it has existed. However, recently, I’m noticing a lot of game systems that are highly focused on being 1 thing. Games like Modiphious’ Star Trek, FLP’s Alien, Symbaroum, The One Ring, and many others. That has been the way of RPGs since the 1...
