Re: First time I have ever had to do it
I've had to do it once. It wasn't fun, but it was necessary.
The climactic scene was in the University library meeting room, with 15 gamers seated around a table, and me telling 7 of them to get lost.
The games got SO much better after that, though.

Re: Tomb of Horrors for C&C?
Recommendation #1, Prior to Anything Else
Make them play C&C with other modules first. Preferably a good 3-4 game sessions, at LEAST.
The paradigm they are used to - that it must be on the character sheet in order to do it - will kill them in ToH quicker than the sphere of annihilation.

Oh my.
All that pandering to the hypocrites has finally paid off.
Reminds me of something Doc Holliday might have said in Tombstone.

Re: How Gygax Lost TSR
The part that is really sad, though, is how Williams and TSR then went after Gary AFTER those events.... Dangerous Journeys and his efforts were derailed in a very vindictive way, and today there would be no way it would be seen as being covered under D&D proprietaries. It wasn't merely that they f...

The thread stays open for the time being because people are still being respectful. I happen to think reasonable people can disagree about WOTC's approach (and it IS gaming related) without slinging mud, and other than the one notable exception, this has been the case. I hope it continues to be the ...

People wear their rubber wristbands to project the right image and the right "causes." For most of these people, the cause is less important than the ability to look "concerned" to their social group and to pat themselves on the back for a superficial gesture. I see WOTC's approach in exactly the s...

Anything is possible with the right conditions. Swim up a waterfall? Sure, might want some powerful magic though, like some gauntlets of swimming and diving (or whatever those were) or hell, just fake it and fly. Of course, that wouldn't truly be "swimming" though so I guess it might not be possibl...

I received a request to lock this thread, too. I'm not going to do so just yet, but I'm watching it. I'm not calling out any particular comment because I don't think anything crossed the line. I'm just concerned it might go that way. Having said that, I imagine that WOTC's decision-making, on all fr...

I disagree. Why would you argue with the artist? The kind of people I am talking about need to be driven away. Re: SIEGE Check: What's the Downside?
Oh, regarding "negative difficulty": The way I've played from day 1 is that any roll that, modified, is less than the base target number is automatically a failure. That way, the player always knows where they stand if they miss that base number. I use a +6 prime modifier, so targets are always 18. ...

I don't prohibit what characters can attempt. I wouldn't ever say "you can't try that". Oh, I do. Ever since the "Swim Up the Waterfall" DC in 3.0. Quantum mechanics notwithstanding. :) Besides, once I open the door to "anything is possible," I also open the door to "roll for everything." I can't r...

So, I read the entire thread. I don't much go for self-congratulation and obvious exploitation. Does every product have to have a rainbow sticker on it in order for a certain demographic to feel they can use it? Nonsense. Apparently, every bar in Toronto believes so, but only during certain times of...

Just one final thought - What I said wasn't "rubbish" and it wasn't "passive-aggressive." I got into more than my share of political arguments with none other than Mr. Peter Bradley on various incarnations of TLG forums. Then I realized that this isn't the place for that, and that it drives people a...

Thanks. We all would like to think that we're refined or educated, and that we've some sort of evolved consciousness that allows us to understand the Way Things Must Be, while everyone else is the Other that can't possibly have a point or two now and then. The sad part is that so many don't understa...

Back in about 1997, kits killed my 2E game deader than dead. Because I was nice and wanted to let people use their shiny new splatbook.
So I think it's obvious where I come down on this.

Re: So why CAN'T the Polymorph spell be used to maintain...
I need to check the descriptions in the first printing - if PO and PS are the same effect now, then something has changed. C&C 1P was = AD&D, I believe. PS was nerfed in favor of a higher level PO equivalent. As I recall in AD&D, the Poly spells had an aging effect on the caster, though my memory ma...

Re: Do you run C&C with the flavor of a certain D&D edition?
I think when I picked up C&C I found it worked a lot like how I THOUGHT AD&D worked when I was 14, and I liked that. It's the spirit of AD&D. I think I probably really don't know what "an AD&D 1e way" means, especially to someone else. This rings very true to me. I never played AD&D "correctly" as ...

Re: Do you fudge die rolls? Creature Stats? On the fly?
Die rolls? Almost never, unless it's a random encounter table, and I've already told myself certain results are re-rolls. Monster stats? All the time. If I created the encounter to begin with, there's nothing forcing me to keep it as written, if it was written down at all. As long as I'm not unfair ...
