Whenever I read about FATAL I just think,

Oh, so that's what "Too Far" looks like.

Re: Should We Scrap Raise Dead/Resurrection?

I've never had them as an everyday part of the game IMC. They are strange and scary spells tales are told of but few know, seen (rightly) as necromancy. Whispers are told of legendary figures said to have been "raised", such as Rulgar Two Lives- but is he man or ghost? What did he see on the other s...

Re: Advice for some quick and dirty EV?

This is what I use. Similiar to BFRPG i think. Optional Simple Encumbrance System . Fast and simple. ● PC can carry as many items as he has strength points without penalty. ● Add 2 items for a strength prime. ● Add 2 items for a constitution prime. ● You can assume your blades have scabbards, baldri...

Re: Hardback CK Screen

I've aquired alot of TLG products now but this would be one I would probably spring for as well. I don't care if it has one panel devoted to CKG stuff but I would prefer most/all PHB/M&T. There is SO much in the CKG, all of it optional or with multiple variations that it would really need its own pr...

Re: A1: Assault On Blacktooth Ridge Question (POSSIBLE SPOIL

Yeah I think a "warning" that things may be a little different this time around in a new game is fair, especially if they were used to carefully graded encounters in other games. I sometimes throw in a rumour/clue if there IS a really deadly encounter lurking out there, but one only a resourceful pa...

Re: A1: Assault On Blacktooth Ridge Question (POSSIBLE SPOIL

One thing that they should learn is that it is perfectly acceptable to RUN from encounters when you are heavily outclassed :) This. IMO the game is more enjoyable when the players don't feel the world has all been created to be cosily scaled just for them and everything will be "fair". It adds vers...

Re: primeval instincts question

I see. I am assuming it cannot be used to alter to hit or damage rolls. Would it apply to saving throws? Or just siege checks? A player of mine will be running a barbarian so I took a closer look and I want to be on solid ground when ruling this ability. Depending on how you read it, it could come ...

I think the "heavily armoured, decent fighter & spellcaster" just has to go. Or can he not be adequately facsimilied by warrior/wizard or wizard/warrior class and a halfs? The addition of a spell like the "Armour" spell from 2e D&D, or a more illusiony/necromancery one like this from my campaign (id...

Re: musing about spell using and professions

A pretty interesting idea. I like the idea of some "common" spells and others hidden away or prized as secret knowledge. Being able to identify a casting lineage by their spells (like a martial artist recognises a certain move in those old hong kong kung fu movies) as belonging to certain traditions...

Re: How Many Players?

Yeah good point. Many of the "old school" modules I remember and run are designed for 4-7 PC's and from the way they run, averaging 5-6 I guess. (No mathematician here, just a feeling). But my group has been me (DM) & 3 PC's for most of our career. It makes a significant difference. I allow a slight...

Interesting, thanks guys. It seems I am sitting happily in the minority. The thing that really matters is that it's 'happily'! I don't go for hard restrictions, but I will tell players that certain combinations are unlikely and they can expect to face some difficulties because of it. A Dwarven Wiza...

Do you guys have race/class restrictions in your games?

Just wondering how many people allow any race to be any class and multi-class as per C&C PHB? Or how many houserule in rules against dwarven wizards, gnomish paladins or human multi-classing and the like, similar to older D&D editions? Personally I houserule in a list of allowed classes for each rac...

Yeah I'd be pretty lenient personally. I allow short sword, also hand/throwing axe, light hammer, mace, sickle and club. They could all be reasonably assumed to be arm length or smaller.

I see no reason to be too niggardly about it.

Re: Readied Crossbows

I'd be more likely to give a +2 to init- they still have to not be surprised and aim the thing and react quicker than the next guy which are all possibilities given the relatively abstract nature of combat. It is also a road I avoid in C&C since then you have knocked arrows to worry about, is that d...

Thanks for all the help. Makes me feel very welcome. I notice there is a Castles Keepers Gude as well as a CKG "Digest" version. Would the digest edition be sufficient for a new comer? You don't need the CKG to play, all the rules are in the PHB & M&T. The CKG is more about campaign advice & ways t...

I think it would GREATLY add to a mages versatility & power. They would have the spell for every occasion. The usual counter-argument runs along the lines of "what about the player skill required in selecting an apporopriate spell list for a scenario? That gets lost". That aside, if I were to add su...

Re: So what do you like best in the CKG?

I agree the spell clarifications and henchmen section are handy. I would use the aerial combat rules should it ever come up and the large scale battle system ditto. The main section that caught my eye was the Advantages. Some of them (not all) will make it into my game, I particularly like the racia...
