Challenge Base 12/18 vs 10/15 vs ??

I have recently been reading Amazing Adventures, and noticed that the SIEGE engine uses a challenge base of 15 (10 if prime), while C&C uses 18 (12 if prime). I've read some of the justifications for the 12/18 (makes the prime choice more important), but I was wondering why the 10/15 levels were cho...

Re: Players Handbook Six

Not sure if this has already been mentioned... In the Class And A Half rules on p142, Quick Rule 4 says: Wizard or illusionist supported by an armor proficient class may cast spells while armored, however, any spells which allow a save are granted a bonus to the save equal to the base AC bonus of th...

Re: Ice Wizards and Specialist Wizards--need ideas

I run a campaign in the Wilderlands of High Fantasy. To the north lies a realm of ice. This realm is known as Valon. In Valon, ice wizards weave their weather magic and rule the northern regions. Sounds cool huh? Excuse the pun. To the far south is a city of magic splendor known a Tula. In Tula wiz...

Re: City on the Edge

The mages are a very small part of Bluffside, while in Hallowfaust they are the driving force. Yes, but in Hallowfaust they are all necromancers... Not that similar to Tula. I have also thought about using Bluffside for Tula. It is the closest thing I have found. It would take some shifting, to mak...

Re: Spot Checks…What do You do?

I think separating up the spotting by what you're trying to spot, as well as what ability it ties into might be a viable option. It fixes the different things a PC is trying to notice and divvies them into separate skills. And a class could have more than one. Spot (Wisdom) : finds hidden people, s...

Re: gettng swallowed by the Purple Worm pretty much guarante

I looked up the S&W version (my current go-to monster source). It has them swallow whole if the roll to hit exceeds the target by 4 or more (and they are adding 15 to the roll...). Once you are swallowed, you're dead!

Re: Identify spell--question

If the spell takes 10 minutes to cast, but only lasts 1 round per level, how can multiple castings be cast at the same time? What am I missing here? Duration = 1 round per level of caster. Exactly. So a 7th-level caster's spell would last 7 rounds, x 10 seconds per round = 70 seconds. Which is much...

Identify spell--question

Hi, I am puzzled about the wording of the Identify spell. IDENTIFY, Level 1 WIZARD, CT 10 tn., R 5 ft., D 1 rd./lvl., SV none, SR no, Comp V, S, M. This spell reveals a single function of one magic item for each round it is in effect. The most basic functions are revealed first, including how to act...

Re: Whirlwind attack vs combat dominance

So let me get this straight, the reason Combat Dominance does not suck is that 1 HD monsters can pose a threat to high level PCs, they can pose a threat because players are supposed to have low armor class and plate armor is generally not available? In my current game (as player not dm) the front l...

The cheapest thing would be to get a pad of easel paper and use a fresh sheet for each session. Or get a piece of poster board and laminate it.

Re: Combat Maneuver Questions

I've ruled that the spell is lost. Maybe I'm a little too hard, but if the wizard is in the middle of casting a magic missile on a foe, and an ally comes along and kills the foe, the wizard is left hanging out to dry. I might would consider (and you may, too) that the wizard could pull the spell in...

Re: Combat Maneuver Questions

If a wizard announces they're casting a magic missile at the orc in front of him, but the orc wins initiative, then it's going to make for an interesting round. That wizard better think long and hard if casting the spell is better than backing up. If the wizard gets hit, he loses the spell he's cas...
