Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

Thank you for your clarification and explanation, Snoring Rock. Everything you posted sounds spot on, as well as written in a way that was easily understood.

Others may wish to carry on the discussion, but I feel the question has been answered thoroughly and completely.

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

I do not disagree, but I also do not agree entirely. I could not have replied to your reply with a better reply than your reply! I could have tried, but I would not have been successful! Truly, this is a matter of taste. I have done "tarot readings" for characters in-game, and let the cards fall wh...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

My comment has nothing to do with "the remaining readers". Simply, the total % of readers, in ALL areas, being in steep decline. Ah, my misunderstanding! My comment was about the difficulty of getting people to read the game rulebooks, even those that enjoy reading. We were having two different con...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

Our comments are not mutually exclusive, Arduin. I have no doubt that the number of non-readers has increased. Books are hard compared to tv shows, movies, video games, computer games, internet, and so on. However, of the remaining readers there are, people out there who enjoy reading, they don't wa...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

I believe that is your experience. Mine's different. My wife reads far more than I do, for example she's read all the GoT novels, but I never will. She just finished the first three of the Sword of Shannara series. It's taken me 3 years to get through 7 John Carter novels. I can read, I can write, I...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

To be fair, if you're not a hardcore fan of roleplaying games, the games are not exactly fun reading. Now, me? I love 'em. I have hundreds of them, and I read them all the time, just for fun. I just grab one that looks good, sit down on the couch, open to a random page, and dig in. My wife doesn't g...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

That said, I agree with tree that it is best to discuss it (preferably before hand) with the party and explain the call with concrete reasoning and explicit examples. That way the party has a bench mark to start from and knows what to expect in given general situations. Given that most of the stuff...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

True. Tarot is more... random, too, when done right. Plus using the Major Arcana can have some more significance when drawn. I think I'll change my own recommendation. I thought about it myself a bit, and actually, although it would limit "options" from 78 to 22, (or from 156 to 44 is you use rever...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

I have started to like the idea of, on a very high roll (10+ more than needed), one draws a card from a standard Poker deck. The card determines the effect, which is something I stole from Deadlands in essence. Similarly, a very bad roll has the same thing, only reversed. I like it! Although, quite...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

Definitely! Just last night we, or at least I, got a great laugh out of Zask the Gnome Fighter rolling a fumble on his attack, then a fumble on his DEX check to avoid a bad mishap, which caused him to fall off of the table he was fighting from, face first, onto the floor, prone, but not helpless, b...

Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

Shadowrun must be part of World of Darkness. It is a dice pool system, and therefore, subject to all terms and quantifiers of the same. The specific type of die in the pool is irrelevant. I'll do you one better, Serleran: Sovereign Stone, before it was made into a d20 system game, was made using it...

Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

Treebore, I'm using the term D20 Game as a proper noun in this case. Perhaps I should say D20 System instead of just d20 game? I'm speaking of the D20 System, like, for example, the Tri-Stat System, Cortex System, etc. I know that game rules cannot be copyrighted, but you're taking a heck of risk if...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

Probabilities are determined over a large number of rolls, not a single roll. This is why people get the impression they roll 1's or 20's more often than they should. If they were to make 1,000 rolls, and record them, they will see that they have the even distribution that they should see. Assuming...

Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

You cannot classify games based upon the dice they use, just as you cannot classify games based upon the fact that some of the material is available for anyone to use. Hasbro/WotC defined a "d20 System" game as one that required the d20 Players Handbook to use, meaning it uses those basic mechanics...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

A natural 20 or 1 is not a success or failure. However, if you can only fail on a 1, unless there is some ultra-drama, I'd wonder why I was rolling it. I knew someone would say that, which is why I waited until someone did to post this: Our group rolls 1's (and sometimes 20's) far more than would s...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

Ask the Castle Keeper. "Can I try that again?" "Sure, but the strain has made you more tired. Do so at a -1." Or... "No, you failed to determine whether the creature has a weak spot. Staring at it longer isn't going to tell you more than you know now." Trying again is, as it should be, highly depen...

Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

Correct. The RAW in C&C does NOT give auto success or failure for 20's or 1's respectively. One other thing: That also means that there are things you can't fail, right? I mean, with a high enough level even a 1 will succeed. So there is no chance of failure once you're up around 15th level for som...

Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

The OGL is in the back of the book, so that makes it a d20 game, yes, but I don't mean that it's a rip-off or in some way inferior. Just the opposite, Troll Lord Games did a great job of giving the d20 audience exactly what they wanted. How great? Well, now the new D&D 5e has cribbed notes from C&C...

Re: Is C&C a d20 game?

I googled the definition of "iteration" before starting this reply. After reading the definition, I will say that I will not use that word in respect to C&C again. Re: Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

Basically Steve repeated that they intentionally left a lot of rules areas unexplained, so that a CK could house rule it however they like best, and not have it contradict the book, because the book never says anything about it. That is probably one of C&C's greatest strengths, imo. As someone who ...

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

I have allowed 2nd tries in the past for lock picking, always simple chests or locked doors ~ because sometimes I want the party to find what's in the chest or behind the door. Really? Because it's codified in the SRD. I figured C&C either kept it the same or changed it. I am surprised that they didn't consider it at all.

Newbie Question 2: Natural 20 and Skill Rolls

Yep, Natural 20's automatically succeed in combat rolls and saves.

What about skill rolls? Are some things just beyond the abilities of the players until they reach higher levels? Or does even a first level thief have a 5% chance of busting into the fantasy equivalent of Fort Knox?

Re: Newbie Question: How does C&C handle trying again?

This whole question came up because I have newbies as players. It was a simple affair, and I had a classic "trap" set up for them. Two chests: 1 old and junky, directly within their reach; and 1 shining like gleaming gold, kept behind a locked cage. If they choose the junky one, the gold one disappe...

Third, and to the original question, the spell for identifying magic items is, conveniently enough, called identify and is a wizard only 1st level spell.
