Re: CKG's Mana and Spellcasting Option

It works better when you have to, or can, spend points to modify the spell variables. Want to increase base damage from d6 to d8, add 35 mana. Or whatever. This allows a much wider "free casting" net. Of course, I really hate having to track time so I would ignore the refresh rate. Instead, I would...

Re: Please Help Me Solidify Disciplines

I'm still looking for replies, but right now my current idea is using the Mana Points rule from the CKG, and giving the primary discipline x1 point cost, the directly opposed discipline x3 point cost, and the other two disciplines x2 point cost. Alternatively, a Wizard can choose not to specialize a...

Re: Please Help Me Solidify Disciplines

That could work too. Only reason I wouldn't do it is I hate book keeping. So keeping track of costs, expenditures, etc... would not be something I would like. You know yourself and your players far better than I do. Yeah, that's less annoying for me because most of my gaming background requires tra...

Re: Please Help Me Solidify Disciplines

I just posted another question about the Mana and Spellcasting optional suggestion in the CKG. It occurs to me that this would be a great way of using the Disciplines idea, by simply raising the costs of non-preferred spells. Spells from your preferred discipline cost as listed, diametrically oppose...

CKG's Mana and Spellcasting Option

In preparation for the game I'm wanting to put together, I've been doing a lot of reading, and just now re-read the section in my Castle Keeper's Guide entitled "Mana and Spellcasting." So that you don't have to hunt down your copies and read it to know what I'm talking about, here's a short version...

Re: Please Help Me Solidify Disciplines

Since you are essentially using the schools of magic from RPG's such as L5R, and others with Oriental flavor/philosophies, you can have them pick a favored Discipline, which allows them to pick all spells from that discipline at their full level, then the two that are NOT considered diametrically o...

Please Help Me Solidify Disciplines

Hello! A few weeks ago I wrote with a question and got a lot of great help on it. I'm trying to remove clerics but still keep access to the magic that is so helpful in campaigns. After reading all the replies and bouncing around some things around and off my Co-GM For Life, this is what I've come up...

Re: Converting to C&C and balancing the magic classes

Or like playing Star Wars and Obi-wan is the DM and you as players are Luke, Leah, Chewie, Han . . et. al. :P Nah, that would be like playing Monopoly and the other players actually are a Thimble, a Car, a Wheelbarrow, and with an actual dog as the Banker. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/...

Re: Converting to C&C and balancing the magic classes

I suspect I would really dig a "generic universal" SIEGE Engine game, too. If they don't have one of those out yet, I'd sure be interested in it when they do. Not that I want to play every game with the same set of rules (I don't), but a great set of rules that can be used for anything you can imagi...

Not disagreeing, just telling you the discussion that has come up since I first introduced the hobby to her. Ah, but therein lies her point, Tree. We've been through all this enough times, and I can tell you what she'd say, because she's said it (or some variant) often enough: "And all of that would be relevant if we were watching a movie or having an actual practice combat, but we're not. I'm not sure I can be of help here, mostly due to different play style approaches, but I'll see what I can contribute. Some thoughts: 1. Why not just identify the game you are currently playing? It might make it easier for people to suggest conversion tips. 2. Personally, I think you are being over...

Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

I will say, this thread and its replies are helping me see why we opted to use a different game. :( We found C&C a blast. Fast, fun, easy to play. This other game we're playing is fun, too, but creating and running monsters is as much fun as dental work. Oh, how I miss the days of "3 HD, 15 HP, AC 1...

Converting to C&C and balancing the magic classes

Thanks to everyone who answered my previous question about balance (or lack thereof) in the magic-using classes. Now I'd like to tell you why I asked, and get some feedback and suggestions: We are currently playing a game in a fantasy homebrew setting. Because of reasons, I'm strongly thinking of co...

Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

Hopefully that wasn't the entirety of the first few levels for you. If so, then that is on the CK. Any class can be rendered useless (or at least taken out of its wheelhouse) with particular situations. So i'm a believer that the CK should tailor the adventure to account for that sort of thing. -Fi...

Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

Wow. And it seemed like such a simple question, too. I notice that the "which is more powerful X or Y" debate focuses on the Wizard v Illusionist. I presume that's because the concepts of Druids are more clear in the minds of the players, while "Illusionist" seems to have very different defini...

Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

Cool. I got the idea of randomly rolling the sex of characters from a story I heard about the production of Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) He gave the characters last names and randomly divided them up because any of those characters could be male or female. It is the same in games. A shop keeper can ...

Love the description of your game world. I prefer that kind of thing myself. Not interested in alignment or gods. And honestly the idea of metal armour just seems ridiculous. Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

As for Druids being weaker than Clerics? No way! Effective use of their Animal Companion, or Companions, depending on how the Druid wants to do it, gives them a nice boost from level 1. Then once they get their own wild shapes to assume, well, lets just say I much prefer playing Druids over Clerics...
