Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

make a bridge for the characters to cross Seriously? It can allow you to defy gravity? :-/ As long as the others players don't "disbelieve" then the bridge is real for them. And hangs around for a bit after the caster stops concentrating, so he can hustle over the bridge before it disappears. I don...

Re: Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

If you think Illusionist are weaker you haven't used your imagination. make a bridge for the characters to cross Seriously? Cleric v Druid, Wizard v Illusionist

Hey everyone, I've got a question that you long-timers might be able to help me with. I haven't really been playing C&C very long or very much, so there's still much I don't know. One thing we've never done is played with Clerics and Wizards. My own setting is VERY low magic, so I removed those two ...

Re: Would You Consider This CK Cheating?

Thanks, everybody, for the replies. Yeah, this is a tricky situation because in this world, there are no bugbears. There's also no Orcs, Elves, or Dwarfs (of the RPG kind). There are no Gnolls, either. There may be Lizard People, deep in some swamp far away from the eyes of man, but I'm not sure abo...

Re: Would You Consider This CK Cheating?

It should be noted that my question about the character is not questioning my game design theory, but whether or not it's fair to create a bugbear that's 10 HD. Another option would be to find a 10HD monster and then the players will clearly know, "Oh, look, he has a small red dragon for a bodyguard...

Re: Would You Consider This CK Cheating?

Ultimately, it comes down to why you're playing. If you wanted to force a story, you could just write a story. If you want to play a game, and have as many people enjoy it as possible, you should design your game around that. I agree 1000% on your first statement, WSUJ. That said, by now I think ev...

Thanks for all the great feedback! Regarding the reason he's so powerful, I kinda have two.... The first is Cosmic Rays.... Okay, not really, but how about magical rays? I don't know. The point is, the mini is orange, and I've kinda taken to seeing him growling (in his own language) "It's CLOBBERIN'...

Would You Consider This CK Cheating?

The question: Is it cheating to create a monster that's virtually unkillable by boosting Hit Dice and Hit Points beyond what the players can handle, because the monster isn't supposed to be killed (at least, not yet)? Here's the rest of the story: I'm working on the background and important NPC's of...

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?

Wow, this thread is amazing to me. I thought I was the only person in the world who would prefer black words on white paper to full color. For me, mostly, it's that full color costs more and I'd rather buy more stuff at lower prices than less stuff at higher prices, even if the less stuff is prettie...

Re: C&C S&S?

One thing I'm still not sure about is high level play using the standard rules. I asked this a bit earlier but I'm sure it got overlooked in all the discussion: So, the Fighter gets the very best armor he can get, let's say +8. And the Rogue gets the very best armor she can wear and still do her rog...

Re: C&C S&S?

(3) Limit magic. Both items and spellcasting levels. My solution to limiting spellcasting levels is to tell my players that spellcasting levels can never be more than 50% of total levels. (I do this in a Middle-earth campaign and it has the wonderful effect of keeping spells scarce. If you remember...

Re: C&C S&S?

I would say that the best way to do it is severely limit magic items. Also take a look at the Arcanist class from Amazing Adventures. They have a siege check they have to make to cast a spell and there are Sanity rules in the system as well. Also in S&S you usually horrible abominations, demons fro...

Re: C&C S&S?

Ok, I hope someone will answer this question, please. In normal games, are you expected to boost Armor Class higher than the armor levels? Here's the thing: I won't have "magic armor" in my game, nor will full plate exist. The highest armor available will be maybe +6. Of course, Rogues and Assassins...

Re: C&C S&S?

Oops, my bad. I say D&D on a general high level generic descriptive term for any fantasy game. S&S or S&W in my mind are D&D games . . well, as you described it. D&D with much less of the magic, demi-humans and other such stuff. Ah, I see. It might interest you to know that this is the very first "...

Agreeing with Aergraith and just adding my 2 coppers. If you like C&C, it should be almost perfect for any style D&D game. Well, I appreciate the coins, Rhu. Re: C&C S&S?

I'm doing the same thing. My setting is now reluctantly dragging in some very rare examples of demihumans, but it's mostly humans vs. humans, or undead humans at this point. I have run the same setting using Delving Deeper, which worked fine, so would Swords and Wizardry, just disallow demihumans, ...

C&C S&S?

Okay, here's the thing: I want to do a new game with my friends, and I want to do something kinda different. My interest is in doing a world that's very "Sword & Sorcery," which, by my own personal definition, means low magic and low fantasy. No Elves, Orcs, Dwarfs, etc. Sorcery is rare, usually evi...

Winged PC's

Hey all; We've been playing a different game lately (What? There are other games out there? Naw...) and what we've been playing has been kinda freeform, mostly without hardly any rules at all. One of the PC races in that game is a Winged race, which is no big deal there, because there's not really a...

Understanding Barbarian's Intimidate

Up until now I've been using older versions of C&C with the older Barbarian rules, but now we've upgraded to the later rules and I have my first player who wants to play a Barbarian... and I'm already stuck on something. Specifically, I'm stuck on the Intimidate rule. "Any creature of equal or lesse...

Although my group is currently on hiatus, I'm using this time to communicate with my other two players via email and try to really sound out what to do when we play when we get back together. Re: Are monsters logical in a non-magic world?

If you wanted to house rule a defense bonus you could. Fighting types get a bonus equal to 1/2 their level to AC, rogue types get a bonus equal to 1/3 their level, and scholarly types get a bonus equal to 1/4 their level. Easy to remember and does away with a reliance on armor. I'm gonna derail my ...

Re: Are monsters logical in a non-magic world?

Good points. And LotR is a good reference point, and one that I often forget.

My reference points are primarily the works of Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Marv Wolfman, but, as you pointed out, LotR as written is a Low Magic world, as well.

Are monsters logical in a non-magic world?

Our group is currently on hiatus, and we won't be playing again until at least October, and possibly not until next year, depending on how things go. Armor-Lite Playtest World (Pulp Fantasy)

We've been playing C&C with most of the rules changes dictated by the setting. But the one thing I've wanted to do was have a world akin to the world of John Carter, or Beastmaster, or Savage Sword of Conan. A world inspired by Frazetta art and pulp fantasy. The big bugaboo is armor. You just don't ...
