Re: Illusionist healing spells

I kind of answer that one just as simply. Ever been dreaming and crazy things happen and you just accept them as real until you wake up and then they seem ridiculous? The illusionist is able to get into that space in your head. At the time you can't shake it (if you fail your save) even if it seems...

Re: Illusionist healing spells

I prefer the "illusion as hologram" version. The illusionist creates an incredibly real-looking, 3D model, complete with sounds and smells at higher levels. Everyone can see this hologram (yes, even undead <sound of can of worms being opened>). If you make the save, you realize it is a hol...

Re: Illusionist healing spells

Likewise, in a fantasy world, I can grant that a strong enough belief can alter reality. This is the biggest sticking point for me. Obviously, this is fantasy, so things can happen that are not logical. But putting healing spells aside for the moment, and talking about the overall design of the cla...

Re: Illusionist healing spells

I voted to remove them. I have no problem with arcane healing. I have no problem with C&C being different from D&D. I just can't accept the idea of "illusion" being real. Illusion: (from the Free Dictionary) 1. a false appearance or deceptive impression of reality. 2. a false or m...

Found it! Issue #8. (Right after your "Dungeon Building 101" article.) Errata is in Issue #9.

Hmmm. Maybe I've been missing something, but I've never used a roll for surprise. We've always just gone with the situation--it's either obvious who is surprised, or if it's not, then no one is. Works well, and is simple. (and no wisdom "surprise-busting" problem, either)

<t>Illusions are VERY powerful in the 4th printing. Anything can be created and have all properties of the real thing (if the save is failed). I think a good way to manage this is to not allow a character to deliberately fail the save for illusion spells. Thus, an illusionist can never believe his i...

I like alignments for role-playing purposes (as a guide, not a straitjacket). However, the only characters with detectable alignments in my game are clerics (and paladins) of good or evil deities, undead, and residents of the aligned outer planes (hells, abyss, heaven, etc.)

<t>I would suggest that you give your players some advance notice before you do anything. Tell them that you will continue running the current game for x sessions (or until some natural break in the story occurs), but then you want to try a new system. If they don't want to try a new system, then su...

<t>We play that each character gets 1 "fate point". If he takes a mortal wound, the player can decide to spend the point, and the character is "miraculously" spared (still very bad off, though!). After the point is spent, no further resurrection/raise can occur for that character. It works well for ...

It's possible, but in the end I found it to be too much trouble--there are so many thing different about the LA creatures, that you can't easily substitute them. And it is harder to convert NPCs. But it can be done.
