Are you tired of Facebook shenanigans and wish there was a better way? Hello Ello.

Seriously though. There are really two reasons that I'm not on Facebook. The most important one is that my life is just not that interesting and anything I want to share about it I share irl or other more direct means. The second is I never really liked the Facebook model and like it even less as it has turned into a advertisement juggernaut. Ello is a very simplified version of social media that is in its beta stage and was created by a bunch of artists unhappy with the direction Facebook went. So, rather than grouse about Facebook they just created their own social media site and made it the way they wanted a social media site should be. Simple and easy to use.

In a nut shell there are two basic categories, "Friends" and "Noise". Put people you care about in your friends feed and interesting accounts in your noise feed and separate they will always be. Of course there are other things and being in beta there are more features to come. There is no fee, but they freely admit that eventually they will be adding paid services that enhance the experience but these are optional and will never become needed services. They also promise to never advertise so the trade off of supplying optional paid stuff seems reasonable to me. I'll probably never pay for anything, but if you liked some enhanced stuff and want to support Ello the option will be there.

The biggest selling point is they will never gather your information and sell it to others. Everything you post will stay in the Ello community and not sold off to the highest bidder.

So, why am I posting this thread? Well currently you can only get invites to Ello and I have a few to give away. I guess this is a controlled release of Ello. They set you up with 5 invites, initially. I'm going to offer 2 of them to my own circle so I have 3 that I'm willing to give away. There is a request button for more invites, so I imagine there will be more invites available. I'm just mentioning this because I haven't used my two personals yet and not knowing what the request more invites does I'm going to wait until I've given the 2 personal invites away rather than see what happens. What this rambling means is if I get more than 3 requests from here I'll certainly give out invites after I request more invites. So, you all will hopefully get an invite, you just might have to be patient as I'm dependant upon other people accepting my invite before I can request more.

This will be a first come first serve kind of thing.

And yes, I think it would be cool if the TLG guys would get on Ello. So Steve and crew, want a invite I'd be happy to supply one.

Just pm me a e-mail address you'd like the invite sent to. From there you just set up your Ello account and you to will have invites to send to people you'd like to see on Ello.

I say where it is in my post. Just look for the page with the progress of the site as to features by date.

Well their mission statement seems to contradict what your prediction is. I mean it is cool if Ello is not for you, but to come in guns blazing, making fallacious statements by "Reading between the lines." is patently unfair. I don't know what your motivations are but you are obviously trying to influence people to not try Ello.

I mean you can also take it that they pretty much have to put something like that in there, going by other social media websites, because of what people post on those sites. I don't particularly want to accidentally run across a post with child porn in it.

Defining what they mean by this "feature" would certainly help, but jumping to conclusions is just as unhelpful.

If it does turn tyrannical then I'll be one of the first ones to leave, but if you go by what you think will happen you might as well abandon all hope of ever joining any social media site forever.
