Random Encounters for a superhero on Patrol

Post by BASH MAN »

So I am currently now running a long-term supers campaign set in the city of Megapolis. Something I am deciding to do is compile a nice, full list of random encounters heroes will encounter on patrol.

I am NOT asking for a fist full o' plot devices here. Don't have to be involving supervillains-- just the sort of things that a superhero might run into on "patrol" and have to deal with.

So far, as examples, I have:

Fire-- and Firetruck cannot get to blaze because of traffic

--someone trapped where FD cannot reach

Armored Car Robbery

High- speed chase

etc.

My list of encounters is being divided up by neighborhoods (Slum, Downtown/Midtown, and Uptown) and by time (Day or Night) so a wide variety of things are appropriate-- not only crime necessarily.

PS-- for those who follow BASH! our Sci-Fi Core book has been released on rpgnow.com.

At last! All those many years of reading comics are about to pay off . . .

- Construction Site This one is tried and true with endless possibilities: A girder about to fall; a kid climbed up too high, got injured and now is trapped; someone fell into the newly poured cement foundation; someone is trapped between two heavy metal objects, etc.

- Suicide Jumper Jazz this one up a bit - they're not on a ledge or a bridge . . . how about on a billboard sign for the "Daily News" newspaper that features a picture of the Super-hero team themselves! News cameras are already there . . . focusing on the Super-hero billboard and now the actual Super-Heroes (oh . . . the irony!)

- High Society and Low Crime A prominent politician, actor, businessman is observed in some sort of crime (drug deal, jewelry theft, etc.) But they have bodyguards and contacts . . . it might be the super-heroes word against theirs . . .

- You're not Tearing Down My Home! Poor old lady - her house is about to be subjected to the wrecking ball . . . but this old lady is no pushover. A few hours back, she tricked the demolition crew into eating brownies laced with a powerful sedative. Now she has taken over the wrecking ball (or maybe just a bulldozer) and threatens to use it as a weapon if anyone comes near.

- Even Dr. Nasty needs toilet paper and groceries The Superheroes recognize an old villain in civilian clothes enter a Supermarket . . . to buy groceries? Is he up to something or does he just want to chill out in front of the TV and watch the Sci-Fi channel?

- The Old Back Alley Again . . . Where would Spider-Man be without alleys? Purse-snatchers run into them, drug deals are done there, clandestine mob meetings, hit-man get hired, transients are murdered by rich kids for kicks . . . you name it . . . back alleys are the haven of random encounters.

- Drive-By Shooting What would a day in the slums be without a drive by shooting. I suspect that an innocent kid is in danger of being gunned down too . . .

- New Super-Guy . . . Bad Technology Everyone wants to a Super-Hero, right? Mr. Mechano is breaking into the scene with a High-Tech powered Robo Walker . . . only the suit is malfunctioning! He can't fly straight, the lasers won't fire and the entire object threatens to overheat and explode! Did I mention that it packs a nasty payload and Mr. Mechano made his appearance at a large rally where he attempted to stop a petty crime (like purse snatching). Oh my Stars and Garters!

- Bad Weather - Comic Book Style! Another horrible blizzard and a car suddenly swerves off the overpass and into the river . . . did I mention that it took out a section of tracks for that El-Train? Umm . . . it's coming and won't be able to stop in time . . .

- Bar Fight, Anyone? Crash Through the window a body is thrown . . . pool sticks are being swung and beer bottles broken . . . it's mayhem at the Thirsty Dog as this barfight rapidly escalates out of control.

- Scientists and Mobsters Why, you recognize that guy! It's Dr. Knowitstein. But . . . why is he being escorted out of the University Research Lab by those rough looking men? Are they part of the Falsetto Family? Is this a hit?

- Like a Stone . . . That Ferry the tourists always take to see the city from the river . . . one minute everything was fine and the next there was an explosion from the engine room. The boat is sinking fast . . . very fast and it is packed with panicking families and a disproportionate amount of senior citizens . . .

- The Art of a well planned heist Alarms sound at the Huggengeim Museum. It was a masterfully planned robbery . . . until the Super-Heroes arrive at the scene.

stealing from the Incredibles...

Lil ol lady needing help with kitty in tree, while the heroes are in pursuit of evil-doers..

"wanna-be" uber-fans who show up at scenes to cheer and watch specific heroes, and boo others.. and the 2 camps get into a riot..

Superrobot that evades it's programming and starts attacking it's creator and innocent bystanders..

Elevated train that has busted track and needs to be stopped before certain doom on passengers and drivers below track..

Jet with engine trouble
A newly formed mutant trying his powers out for the first time (and possibly targetting innocents, or later blaming his interaction with the super as the reason he turned bad -reoccurring villian afterwards, etc.)
For crying out loud, do what you can with the attributes the dice have given you. This is what separates the men from the boys... -Kayolan

I'm liking these so far. Much better than stuff I'd been getting in other forums.

A car chase with a twist or 3..... The heroes are chasing a van from -a robbery, a terrorist safe house, etc etc and it has a dangerous pay load. But which van do they chase. the one speeding off like a bat out o hell, the one driving off -at a normal rate of speed- into a poor part of town, or the normal looking car driving off toward the down town business district. Also just what is in the said cars and did the good guys git good intel? Is the "S2" worth the money the heroes are paying him?
