Heading to St. Louis this weekend
I'll be in St. Louis this weekend for a Cardinals game on Sunday. But the two things I'm really looking to do while I'm there is drink some great local beers and browse any good local game shops.
So anyone know of any good local breweries or FLGS? Our hotel is literally right next to the Cards ballpark.

The Schlafly (sh-laugh-lee) Tap Room isn't too far from your hotel... as is Square One Brewery. I also recommend the Chocolate Bar and 33 Wine Bar... they aren't "brew pubs" but they have very large beer selections.
All of these are in the downtown St. Louis area...
I'd also recommend:
McGurk's Irish Pub
The Scottish Arms
The Central West End is a nice area as is the University City (U-City) Loop... most of these places are accessible via the MetroLink (high speed rail) from downtown.
As far as FLGS... the only place I went when I lived in St. Louis was The Fantasy Shop ... it's a decent enough store... or at least was when a bunch of my friends worked there.[/url]

I second the Schlafly recommendation, and I'll add that Tom Schlafly is a great guy and I encourage people to patronize his place for that reason, in addition to the great beer. The Tap Room isn't far from downtown and the stadium.

They have a 'Brewmaster' tour in St. Louis. $25 per person (as well as the free tour, of course). They always give free beer at the end. I went through the one in Milwaukee four times before they said I couldn't take it anymore.

I dunno if I'd use that broad of a brush stroke on American beer. Maybe the major beer makers? But there is a ton of great regional and local breweries who craft great beer in the US.

I think calling something an American Beer means one of the big breweries, not local or microbrews... but that's just me...
I do agree, though... most of the big brewery beers aren't that great... but sometimes a man just needs him some Schlitz or PBR.

There is a great local pizza place here in Little Rock called Damn Goode Pies. They have $0.75 PBR in a can nights. It's quite possibly the pinnacle of LR pizza awesomeness.

I've only been to St. Louis once, but it was a good trip despite having gone for a funeral. Anyway, I can't really answer the questions, since I wasn't there to have much fun, but I will say I liked the Arcade Game Museum which was pretty small... at least they had the original Street Fighter, the one with the big buttons you had to pound to use. And, Death Race 2000.

I guess YOU missed the part where I said FREE BEER. My two favorite types of beer are rich, dark stout and free.

I live about two and a half hours south of St. Louis. There are a number of gaming stores. The ones I'm somewhat familiar with are the Fantasy Shops. Seems like the biggest one is in St. Charles. You might have to look around online for more info. I don't know that they sell a lot of used games, but there should be a pretty good stock of new stuff, as well as new and silver age comic books. I'm sure there are other stores, but I do most of my FLGS business in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Carbondale, Illinois. BTW, if you're coming up on I-55 north(near Sikeston, MO) you should stop at Lambert's Cafe...Home of the Throwed Rolls. I live just minutes from there. You won't get a better meal anywhere. Not just your plate meal, but freebies like hot rolls, fried okra, fried potatoes, black eyed peas, etc. Seriously, if you think you've got the time we should hook up for dinner at Lambert's.

Oh. Damn. That does sort of suck, but not entirely unexpected, I suppose. I last went some 15 years ago or so, and it was relatively small and out of the way... which is why I liked it.
