Serenity RPG
Anyone have any experience actually running or playing in a Serenity game?
I'm considering using it for the occasional one-off from time to time and wouldn't mind hearing some feedback from those who've given the game a test-drive. It looks fairly simple, solid and potentially deadly.

The game rules are indeed all three of those - I've been running a Cortex game on Friday nights for a month or two. There are some detailed rules for handing out plot (luck) points and advancement (experience) points, but those are easy to simplify as well.
If you don't mind using all pre-designed space ships, then a combination of the Serenity core book, the expansion books, and some free supplements named the "Cortex Shipyards" will give you all you need in that area.

Treebore is in a game using the CORTEX system, which grew out of the original Serenity RPG rules - I'm sure he'd have some great info for you.

I love it; it's my system of choice for sci-fi.

Interesting, slimy. I've seen the Cortex core book in the shelf of my FLGS for a few weeks now. I might have to flip through it.

Yeah, I found out a long time ago that I'm not a 'one system to rule them all' guy, but I think CORTEX is just amazing at modern and sci-fi.
For fantasy, one would have to write up an entire magic system for it, etc. IMO.
I've started up a facebook group, I'm so stuck on it.

We wrapped up our first Serenity campaign last weekend. We like it but using the die code system for assets & complications that came in later versions of the Cortex systems (starting in the Battlestar Galactica RPG) work much better than the Minor/Major way that is in Serenity. Also you can pick up the Cortex generic PDF at RPGNow for only 9.99.

Looks like they did a 'QuickStart' for Free RPG day in 2008 that's available for free online -- 'Castlemourn Cortex Quickstart':
http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_i ... =81189{1}1)
Hasn't been expanded to a full Castlemourn Cortex game, but might give a taste of the system (I haven't looked at it yet....)
"
Ed Greenwood's Castlemourn is a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting where kingdoms fight for power through political intrigue and outright warfare; where the brave seek their fortunes in dangerous ruins; and where everyone fears the unspeakable evil that shadows the land.
This Cortex-powered Quickstart was originally part of Free RPG Day 2008. It contains easy-to-lean rules based on the Cortex System Rulebook, pre-made characters, and an exciting short scenario, Escape from Blackoon, by Clark Valentine. Enjoy it as an evening's entertainment or as the launching pad for a full-length fantasy campaign!
