Will I get in trouble for telling you what's in the module?
First off, you get a 2-page campaign map of the Darkenfold, which you may have encountered in The Mortality of the Green. The map's scale, 1 inch=32 miles, gives you plenty of territory to adventure in. There is also a mini-Gazetteer and encounter tables for the forest.
This adventure takes place in one small part of the Western end of the Darkenfold. Rather than being a large site-based adventure, Shades of Mist offers a series of places for players to explore.
At first glance, the adventure seems overly plotted and the mini-adventures too tightly connected for my style. There are 4 columns (2 pages) of background story that seems to link the locales in a 'first do this, then do that' manner.
As with most of the Troll Lord materials I've read, it's the encounters where the adventure shines. There are some good-looking set pieces here. In fact, you could copy and paste these encounters into any appropriate campaign and have fun.
If you're going to use this adventure online, you may be a bit disappointed with the maps. Depending on your perspective, this has been the primary failing with TL adventures. The scale is not listed on any of the adventure maps and they have a rudimentary feel to them compared with other adventures on the market. It may be worth your time to re-draw them using a Paint package and then import them into FGII for use. Of course, if you like your maps 'old-school' and intend on drawing more complete versions for yourself, they are functional.
The interior artwork, on the other hand, is fantastic.
If you want a mid-level adventure setting that includes working with elves defending a forest from a growing orc threat, this may have some appeal to you. There are numerous opportunities to build upon what's here. Perhaps the Darkenvold can be a place where you can assemble your deep forest, elven, fey, etc. adventures.
Running two C&C games. Check them out at http://candc.forumotion.com
One is a monthly affair on Saturday nights, 8pm EST (Company of Delvers).
The second is an historically-inspired campaign with players from around the world (Legio Campaign).
