Dragonlance Campaign

I've decided to take a break from my regular C&C campaign to try something completely different, the original railroad series-Dragonlance.

I've made a few changes to fit my vision of Krynn (no gully dwarves, no kender- halflings were offically liquidated in my D&D world over a decade ago, same goes with their annoying cousins, and no tinker gnomes- I despise what Draognlance did to my favourite PC race), plenty of other changes too but my main goals is to have the players drive te adventures and not railroad them too much (well, not completely) and see what happens. Two players couldn't make it for the first session but off went went anyway.

The Adventure Begins

Date: Sept 6th 2007

Three weary adventurers return to their hometown of Solace after five years of unsuccessfully searching for evidence of the Old Gods- Silvia an elven Fighter/Wizard (4th level), Durak a human Rogue (5th level) and Nazarith Godsmack (5th level) a human paladin. In the Inn of the Last Home they meet another companion, the human cleric Darius Davonque (5th level) but two of their other comrades did not show up. The companions learn that all is not well in the region, and almost have a run in with the local town guard, who are throwing their weight around in the inn. Other persons in the bar include a mysterious dark robed stranger and a golden haired man, barely out of his teens and wearing red robes and who keeps a close watch on them. They also met Tika, the barmaid who was but a child when they left the village five years earlier. The Innkeeper Otik asked them to travel to Haven to collect a shipment of beer he has ordered as his usual wagonmaster has a broken leg and coudln't travel. After some haggling over wages they agreed. Silvia learned that her father hasd travelled to the ruined city of Xak Tsagoth and was due back in a few days.

The three day journey to Haven was uneventful but at the town entrance they were questioned by town guards about a blue staff, which they knew nothing about. In the Steel Tankard Tavern they spent an evening listening to rumours about the staff, strange robed figures that have been seen in town talking with the High Theocrat and also about the excesses of the Seeker Guards. They also learned that unless the staff was found that there are rumours that the town will be destroyed, by who or what nobody knew.

The following morning Daruis travels to the Seeker Council hall to meet with his former mentor, the Seeker cleric Elistan. Elistan knows little more about the goings on but warns his former pupil to be careful and that the Seekers are very nervous about the demands that have been made and need to find the staff soon.

Having learned all they can the party leaves. At the gates the wagon is carefully searched by guars in case the staff wasw on board and then free to go. The second day homeward the party are stopped by strange pilgrims of Xak Tsagoth seeking the staff that has been stolen from them. Theses robed figures appeared humanoid but they did not sound human and the party were unable to tell what race they actually were because of the robes that hid their features. The party were left somewhat uneasy as they travelled onwards.

The third day started bright and sunny, having crossed through the pass into Solace Valley the companions heard sounds of fighting coming from the road ahead. Leaving the wagon they hurried forward to investigate and were just in time to see a black haired human plainsmen felled by a spell from another of the robed creatures. His companion, a golden haired plainswoman was wielding a staff which struck, and killed, one of the robed creatures and turned blue as it did so! The paladin, Nazarith spurred his horse forward to the rescue and his heavy flail caved in the head of one of the creatures but even as it did so the woman was felled by a magic missile from the robed spellcaster.

Battle was joined and about seven of the creatures were slain before their leader blew a horn which was answered by more nearby horns- reinforcements! Silvia soon found out that slaying the strange creatures was no easy feat as when they died they turned to stone, trapping her sword, but luckily they eventually turned to dust and the sword was freed. Soon the party were in trouble as more of the creatures charged up the road towards them. Silvia slowed these reinforcements down with a well placed web spell then sensing that they were badly outnumbered the adventurers grabbed the blue staff and bolted for the nearby treeline.

They ran deep into the woods following a game trail. Soon the sounds of pursuit receded but the party could hear the sounds of horns blowing in the distance. They came to a small clearing and rested, as they did so Durak noticed a white stag in the trees on the far side, and Silvia recognising the stag as a sign of good luck said they should follow it and did so.

They were led deeper into the mountains by the creature and crossed a pass into the menacing Darkenwood beyond. As it neared dark in this strange wood they encountered several centaurs which demanded that they drop their weapons and told them they were to be taken to the Forestmaster...
DM Notes: This was a fun, and reasonably light hearted start to the campaign. None of the players had played in Krynn (except for Nigel) and they had little or no knowledge about the series of modules (though one player asked to borrow the novels to read for background). I spent a bit of time explaining the background and making them aware of the differences between Krynn and my own campaign world, as well as background on the Cataclysm and the lack of dragons etc. "Dragons have not existed in Krynn for over 1,000 years, " I explained, "which is why there is a dragon on this cover...and this one...and this...and this" I said as I showed them all the module covers. So there is NO WAY you will be fighting dragons in this campaign, cos the don't exist. Got it? "Got it" the replied and with that we were off.

I intend to have the players meet the (N)PCs from the novels at various times during the campaign, preferably just in time (as was the case with Riverwind and Goldmoon) to see them die horribly!

Week 2: The Well

Date: Sept 13th 2007

Characters

Nazarith Godsmack: human, male paladin 5, LG (Dave)

Silvanus de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darek: human, male, rogue 5, NG (Matt)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Eric Dragonlance: elf, male, Knight 5, CG (Stephen)

Cod Skaps: human, male, wizard 5, N (Dale)

Grunt: dwarf, male, fighter 5, CN (Logan)

The party are taken by the centuars to a glade in the heart of the Drakenwood and here they meet a unicorn known as the Forestmaster who informs them that he was visited by a being that foretold of their travels to his forest and that the party should travel to Xak Tasroth for the greatest treasure n the world awaits them there. When asked how they should reach the ruined city the Forestmaster agrees to some of his pegasi transporting them. They also learn that a terrible evil is afoot and that the Forestmaster does not know if his forest will survive the coming days. The party asked if he knew anything about the staff that they know possessed but he knew little but warned them to use the staff sparingly, knowing little of his powers but suggested that they should hold it boldly when in times of need.

After these negotiations the party leaves and due to the magical nature of the enchantments protecting the forest they ar euanble to speak of what they saw in the forest. All of the adventurers except the elf, Silvia, fall asleep riding the pegasi but by morning they have reached the edge of the swamp surrounding Xak Tsaroth.

Silvia takes the lead as the party travels across the swamp. They successfully cross several rope bridges and saw signs of the recent passage of many feet. Eventually they came to a clearing and could see a dragon half concealed within a ruined temple. A number of huts are located around the circumference of the clearing and they also spy three adventurers- whom Silkvia recognised as companions of hers that they had hoped to meet in Solace some days previously, imprisoned in a cage. A number of draconian could also be seen in the camp. Silvia's keen elven sight was able to determine that the dragon was little more than a model.

The party decided that full frontal assault was the best way to deal with the draconians so after preparing what spells they could they charged. Cod, one of the prisoners, added to the mayhem by casting a pyrotechnics spell which blinded a number of draconians but also Silvia. Grunt and Erica broke out of their prison and Erica managed to grab a scimitar off one of the blinded draconians.

A fierce battle ensued with about 6 spell casting draconians and 8 of their lesser baaz brethren, against the party. By the end of the battle all the draconians were dead but the party was badly injured- the worst being the paladin, Nazarith who had been knocked unconscious. So the wounded party limped off into the swamp to find a safe spot to rest. Fortune smile on them for the only interruption to their rest was a snake that was swiftly killed by Silvia after she almost stood on it.

The following morning the party somewhat rested and healed moved deeper into the swamp, eventually arriving at the Great Plaza. Here the party went in several directions as some members went to investigate the well and others some of the nearby buildings. Suddenly those near the well saw a dark shape burst forth form it and soar high into the air, a long black scaled reptilian form, a Dragon! The party crapped themselves and bolted in all directions: the two elves ran north (back to Qualinesti?), the rogue dove into the nearest building and the others scattered to the points of the compass. The dragon turned, hovered and unleashed a wave of acid that caught both the elves but luckily they both survived the blast (just)! Suddenly a fireball (cast by Cod) exploded around the dragon as it turned to breathe again. Darius held the staff aloft as the dragon breathed directly at him and the staff somehow deflected the acid and protected the cleric from the blast. Cod jumped down the well then cast a feather fall and once he had got his bearings (after discovering that he was freefalling down into a sunken city!) a fly spell and headed for cover for the dragon was not far behind...

The dragon tucked in its wings and plummeted back down the well and into its lair in a ruined temple to lick its wounds. Once he was sure that the dragon was gone Cod flew back to his companions who had now recovered from the shock, and awe of the encounter with a dragon...
DM Notes

The fight with the draconians was a tough one. The party wasn't used to fighting so many spell casters at once but fought pretty well and once they figured out which draconians posed the greatest threat concentrated on those first.

Lack of clerical healing hurt but we decided to modify the 2E AD&D NWP rules and allow those with healing proficiency to heal 2x the normal hps overnight (I allow level + con per night) and this looks like a good solution to the problem of no healing being available (although the party are aware that the point of this adventure is to somehow return "proper" clerics to the world). They are too scared to use the staff as they are unsure how many charges it contains and realise it may be needed for other things.

The encounter with the dragon went as well as could be expected. I decided to tone down the dragon somewhat by having dragons do 1d6+1 damage per HD with their breath weapons rather than damage equal to their hps as per the AD&D Monster Manual and this meant the damage was averaging about 40hps per blast. Not convinced that this way was better and may go back to the "proper" way to do them but that will make dragon breathe pretty deadly (as it should be I guess), another option is to increase damage to 1d8+1 per HD instead. Will think about it during the week.

Modified a few of the encounters for the campaign- most obviously the rescue as I had 3 players waiting to join in the adventure so got the PCs there as quickly as possible so everyone could join in the fun.

Is shaping up to be an interesting campaign with some amusing characters- Dale's morbidly obese wizard who can only move 20ft per round as a result and who stutters, and therefore must roll to see if he can successfully cast his spells, is going to be interesting...if he survives.

One of the best player aids I've discovered is the Dragonlance Atlas. The 3D maps are proving to be an awesome resource for showing the party what different places look like.

The obese wizard was pretty funny- the player demanding to have his spellbook hidden amongst the rolls off fat where the draconians couldn't find it and every now and then finding something else that he'd lost. One of our best/most amusing role-players whose first game back after several months of illness so am hoping he'll be a regular again.

One bit I forgot to mention in the write up last night was how he fireballed a lone bozak draconian but accidently caught the hut that the prisoners equipment was stored in, in the blast. It went something like this:

Grunt the dwarven fighter, and ex-pit fighter ran into one of the nearby huts which it luckily happened to be the one in which all their equipment was stored (1 in 6 chance). He grabbed his sword and started swinging at the startled bozak draconian that was having a crap in the corner. Two solid blows later and the draconian was in trouble so cast a web spell in the hut- trapping himself (so much for spell resistance!) but somehow the dwarf leapt back out of the way and tumbled out of the hut. Grunt then charged off the help the other adventurers. Meanwhile Cod fireballed a nearby bozak draconian but the fireball also accidentally caught the hut that the prisoners equipment was stored in its blast. The web went up in flames (killing the draconion which exploded). Cod realising that his equipment was starting to go up in smoke raced in and spent the next three rounds throwing armour, weapons, and anything else he could find back out to safety and thus ignoring the pitched battle still being fought around him! By the time he'd finished this task the battle was all but over.

As for Cod. I am going to tone down his stutter though- he wanted a 20% chance of spell failure due to mispronouncing his spells but it is way to high- he failed about 3 spell checks vs the draconians. As a benefit his rolls of fat give him 2 pts of damage reduction! Sounded like an amusing concept so I went with it.

Week 3: The Temple of Mishakal

Date: Sept 18th 2007

Characters

Nazarith Godsmack: human, male paladin 5, LG (Dave)

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darek: human, male, rogue 5, NG (Matt)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Eric Dragonlance: elf, male, Knight 5, CG (Stephen)

While the others dealt with the dragon Darek headed into the temple seeking a place of safety. He soon entered a temple in which was the statue of a beautiful woman.

Darius meantime used the staff to heal the badly injured Eric and Silvia of their wounds before following the rogue through the open doors. As Darius headed into the inner temple, which radiated peace and serenity, a statue at the far end of the circular chamber came to life and spoke to him, telling him that the old gods had not abandoned man but that man had turned his back on the old gods. She warned that Krynn was about to face its greatest test and that it was time to restore the true gods to the world. She then told him that the dragon guarded the disks of Mishakal that could be used to call upon the goddess's power and that once these disks had been found that Darius must seek out a true Leader of the people. The goddess then recharged the staff before the statue reverted to stone once more.

The party pondered the words that the goddess Mishakal had spoken and agreed that they must recover the disks. They then used the staff to heal the worst of their wounds before exploring the rest of the temple. After passing through several empty chambers they came upon five goblins in a room trying to take the plaster off the frescos. Being adventurers they immediately attacked and before the small humanoids could react four of them were dead and the fifth unconscious.

Eric and Nazarith decided to explore the rest of the temple whilst Silvia questioned the prisoner (what else do paladin's do when there are prisoners to be tort...err interrogated?) Darius however watched intently to ensure that the prisoner was not ill treated even though he could not understand its tongue. After Silvia had completed her interrogation it was Darius's turn to show how to speak to/negotiate with prisoners.

"What is your name?" Darius asked the goblin via the elf Silvia who translated.

"Fuju Yak-Yak?" replied the goblin.

"Is Fubu your first name?"

"No my family name, that's why I said it first. what do you think?" chortled the goblin.

Questioning the creature had revealed that the goblins didn't really like the dragon, whom they feared greatly, but that they despised the draconians that served it as they bullied them whenever they could. After much haggling and threats the goblin eventually agreed to help the adventurers to travel into the city and take them to the dragon's lair in exchange for its own life.

The whinny little creature ended up having a rope placed around its neck ("Oh don't tell me an ELVEN rope, oh that's original...It burns, it burns," cackled the goblin as the rope was placed around its neck and then rolled around the floor before bursting out laughing at his own cleverness). He then led the party towards the stairs that led down to the city proper...
DM Notes: A very short session. My wife is being support person for a lady about to give birth and I got the call that she was needed to attend the birth so had to return home to look after our kids so we will continue on Thursday...Pity really as I was having a lot of fun with Fubu. Nothing like role-playing an annoying, whinny goblin with a high pitched voice (a cross between Brian's mother in a Life of Brian and Gollum) with smart-a**e attitude to burn. I think I'm going to enjoy this...

NPCs of Note:

Fubu Yak-Yak, goblin.

Role-playing notes: Annoying, sarcastic and cowardly. What else would you expect from a goblin?

Hopefully we'll run the next session on Thursday evening.

Week 4: Into the Dragon's Lair

Date: Sept 21st 2007

Characters

Nazarith Godsmack: human, male paladin 5, LG (Dave)

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darek: human, male, rogue 5, NG (Matt)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Darius, Nazarith, Silvanus and Darek followed their goblin prisoner down into the lower levels of the city. He led them to a secret sewer that eventually gave access to the city located several hundred feet below the surface. It had been swallowed by the cataclysm and was now located in a huge subterranean cavern.

carefully the goblin led them to his leader, the king Dad-da. A wizen old goblin who after some haggling agreed to help the adventurers to rid his city of the dragon. Of course they would get to do all the work. After much discussion the party agreed to trust the goblin and found a place to rest while they readied themselves for their assault on the dragon's lair.

The next morning the followed Fubu through a secret passage that gave access to the large circular chamber that the dragon called home. Lifting an old iron grate the party clambered up into the den as the dragon watched them with its malevolent gaze.

Charge! The impetuous, and reckless, rogue led the charge. Caw, claw, bite. Scratch one rogue. The others were a bit more cautious and stuck close to Dariius hoping that the magic staff would protect them, it did. Twice the dragon breathed at them and twice its acid was deflected by the powers of the staff. Nazarith and Silvia rained blows down on the beast and although dragon injured Nazarith it eventually succumbed to the weight of blows. Darious tried several times to strike the dragon with the staff but each time missed.

The party quickly looted the hoard, taking a magical cloak and 1,000pp and then hastily left the city the way that they had come. In the temple of Mishakal Daruis placed the staff back in the hands of Mishakel assuming it would recharge again but the staff became part of the statue once more.

Reaching the surface without raising the alarm they fled into the swamp, reaching the mountains beyond by nightfall. As the sun set they spied smoke on the western horizon and hundreds of campfires to the south...

That night Darius and Nazarith studied the disks of Mishakal. After they did so Medallions of Faith appeared for them to wear. Daruis became a true cleric of Mishakal while Nazarith became a true paladin (i.e could use all his abilities) of Kiri-Jolith, the war god.

The next morning they headed towards the smoke and soon came upon the ruined and abandoned village of Que-Shu. In the centre of the village three hobgoblin corpses hanged from a gibbet, a message scratched into a shield near by warned of the fate of those who dared to take prisoners. After searching for survivors but finding none they headed for Solace.

Later in the day they rescued a Que-Teh barbarian after dispatching the three draconians that were hunting him. The plainsman warned of armies to the south and that his village had been destroyed and he was trying to get to Que-Shu for help. The plainsmen's tribe had staged a diversion in the morning and allowed him to escape. The survivors of his tribe were being taken south, to where he did not know. After learning that no help would be forthcoming from Que-Shu he agreed to join the party.

As they headed west the party noticed smoke billowing into the sky from the direction of Solace...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DM Notes: The fight with the dragon was tough but the staff helped them there and they deserved to win. The cleric missed every time with the staff so that was that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NPCs of Note:

Fubu Yak-Yak, goblin.

Role-playing notes: Annoying, sarcastic and cowardly. What else would you expect from a goblin?

King Da-Da: Wizen goblin, cunning.

Nightshade: human, male, refugee

Week 5: Battle on the Plains

Date: Sept 23rd 2007

Characters

Nazarith Godsmack: human, male paladin 5, LG (Dave)

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Eric: Elf, male knight 5, CG (Stephen)

Cod Skaps: human, male, wizard 5, N (Dale)

Adan: human, male, bard 5, CN (Matt)

Durin Oakenshiled, dwarf, male, fighter 5, NG (Mike)

During the night Eric and Cod caught up with the party having also managed to find their way out of Xak Tsaroth.

The following morning as the party continued towards Salace they encountered a large group of draconians (twenty baaz and two bozak) escorting two prisoners towards Xak Tsaroth. The draconians immediately fanned out and attacked.

A fierce battle then took place on the plains. Cod did his best to hide (invisibility, fly and mirror image) and snuck around to try and free the two prisoners (Adan and Durin) but the dwarf had already managed to break free of the ropes that bound him as the combat started.

One of the bozak draconians managed to catch Nazartih in a web spell but the others avoided it. The battle lasted several minutes and for quite some time it was only the elf Silvia that seemed to be damaging the dragomen but the combat turned when, after freeing Adan, Cod cast a fireball on the two bozaks, badly injuring one, then followed this up with a pyrotechnics spell which blinded several draconians as well as Eric, Darius, Adan and Nazarith. For some unfathomable reason Nazarith, who was finally free of the magical web, and Eric then started to hit at last.

In the end the two boazaks and two baaz fled into the plains. The only casualty was the plainsman, whom the party had nicknamed Crazyhair. The two freed prisoners agreed to join the adventurers and the party carried on to Solace, reaching the ruins of the once proud town just before nightfall. Many of the buildings had been damaged and a number of draconians could be seen in and around the village...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DM Notes: The fight with the draconians went about 16 rounds and lasted over 2 hours even though we were pushing through the turns pretty quickly. With seven players each turn takes longer but that can't be helped.

Another new player tonight, Mike. It was his first RPG game ever. With the number of players it was at times hard to explain the details of what was going on but he got the basics and seemed to enjoy himself and is intending playing next week.

Nigel (Silvia) seemed to do most of the damage. Using two weapons she slew about 7-8 draconians single handedly.

Week 6: How to make friends and influence people, Cod style.

Date: Sept 30th 2007

Characters

Nazarith Godsmack: human, male paladin 5, LG (Dave)

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Eric: Elf, male knight 5, CG (Stephen)

Cod Skaps: human, male, wizard 5, N (Dale)

Adan: human, male, bard 5, CN (Matt)

On seeing their hometown full of draconians the party decided to bypass Solace and head for Haven instead. They rested overnight in an abandoned farm, that had been torched.

The journey to Haven was without incident. However the party did manage to find three mounts- a mule for Cod, a light warhorse, still in its barding for Nazarith and a riding horse for Eric. There were signs of draconians everywhere but tye adventurers managed to avoid all patrols and eventually found themselves in a copse overlooking the shouldering ruins of Haven.

Silvia volunteered to take a closer look, thanks to the cloak of invisibility that had been recovered from the dragon's lair in Xak Tsaroth (and now identified by Adan) while the others waited. While she was gone a caravan of slaves departed Haven, it was protected by a hundred draconians including some of a species that Silvia had not encountered before.

Within the ruins of haven there were still more draconains, some were overseeing human slaves that were clearing away rubble while others were drinking on the streets and enjoying the spoils of war. Everywhere were signs of battle and dead Seeker guards, some had been almost turned to ash by some great heat. Silvia too passed the slave caravan and recognised Elistan, the Seeker priest, and several of his fellow priests amongst the captives. She made her way to the Seeker temple in the main square but saw a red dragon waiting outside the building. Even as she watched a figure wearing black plate mail armour emerged from the building, climbed onto the dragon's back and then flew off to the north west!

Silvia reported to her friends and the party decided to leave Haven well alone. Cod tried to convince Nazarith to rescue Elistan but the party decided that that was too foolhardy. Instead they decided to continue south to the elven homeland of Qualinesti and try to flee the draconian lands.

Later that day the party almost came to grief when three trolls emerged out of a gully and attacked. A hard fought battle followed. Adan charged the nearest troll, swung missed ansd then cast a magic missile. He then went to cast a levitate spell on himself but by then it was too late, the troll ripped him to pieces (never, ever charge a troll!). Nazarith and Eric meanwhile had charted a second troll on their horses and for a while things went well but then a lucky hit from the troll decapitated Nazarith! Eric then charged the troll fighting Silvia and helped to dispatch it before charging off to the gully where the first roll had now dragged the paladin's corpse and was busy eating it.

Silvia and Darius teamed up against the other troll, at one point dropping it and covering it in oil before it rose again and continued the fight. Indeed the regeneration ability of the trolls almost proved too much for the party as all the trolls recovered from serious wounds. Silvia too was knocked unconscious and Darius was not in much better shape but in the end it was a well placed fireball from the flying wizard Cod the slew two of the monsters and the elven knight Eric managed to finish off the third and burn the corpse!

After burying Nazarith and Adan the party continued (and of course Nazarith's magical armour and Adan's spellbook were both "liberated") reaching the White-Rage river near nightfall. alas the draconians were before them. At least twenty held the ford reported Silvia after returning from another scouting mission. The surviving party members rested up over night and then using Cod's fly and invisibility spells (after some subtle prompting I might add) crossed the river safely and invisibly.

Silvia lead the party towards the elven city of Qualinost. Mid afternoon the party encountered one of the elven warbands protecting the northern border of their homeland. The elves agreed to have some of their number escort the adventurers to Qualinost as they were sure that the elven rulers would want to know about the forces arrayed against them. during all of this Cod was trying his best to get the elves to give him a magical weapon (like they do in the novels when the world is under threat). The elven leader eventually agreed. See that knot hole in that tree over there" she said, pointing at a tree in the distance handing him a long bow. "Sure" replied Cod. "Well, see the knot hole in it." "Yes." "She continued. See the owl poking out of the knot hole..." I cast magic missile interrupted Cod and blasted the owl!

"SPOTTY!" You killed my familiar you bastard!"
And that was that everybody, was in stitches. The plan was that if he had hit the knot hole with the bow the elf would have given him the bow but as it turned out he used a spell scratched one familiar! Now those are the moments that make RPGs worth it, totally random acts of complete comic mayhem.

"Maybe I can help" suggested Darius, then seeing the pile of feathers floating gently back to earth..."then again maybe I can't."
And that that point we called it a night, once we had recovered of course.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DM Notes: Almost a TPK to a wandering encounter! That's what happens when I let Matt roll to see how many monsters are encountered (he rolled a 6 which meant 3 trolls!). Matt is a fairly new player and acts a bit rashly at times, had he done his actions in the reverse order- cast levitate and then blast away with magic missiles he would have been fine but he ended up fighting a troll by himself and the results were predictable.

The incident with the familiar had everybody in stitches, talk about catching the party by surprise! Oh well at least I have a week to think of a suitable response from the elven wizard..

No need to railroad the party as was suggested in the module, they went where I wanted them too of their own volition. So far though I'm enjoying running the modules and see it has more potential than I'd originally given it credit for, all those years ago. The y key (IMO) is to let player actions decided what happens and not the script in the modules, there is still plenty of ways to get things back on (or nearly back) on track without being too heavy handed about it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NPCs of Note:

Highlord Verminnard: Dragon highlord. Well almost encountered.

I-Sha: Very attractive female elf. Leader of the elven warband encountered.

Craig C, I hope you don't mind my few posts here. For one, I have to say I love the sound of this campaign. Good roleplaying with some good encounters in a great setting to play in. Honestly, I'm going to mine your posts for situations, encounters, and thoughts about what I could do in my own campaign. Hope you don't mind too much.

Again, great posts.

Cheers Omote

Feel free to grab any ideas you feel might work in your game.

I'm happy with the way things are going so far, the players are getting into it and the game has "clicked" with everyone. My aim now is to try and hit them with the odd curve ball to keep things amusing/off balance

Week 7: Qualinost

Date: Oct 7th 2007

Characters

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Clash Morningwood, elf, male, ranger 5, NG (Dave)

Hurat Smatter, human, wizard 5, NG (Matt)

I-Sha, the leader of the elves ordered that Cod Scaps be placed under close arrest and that he answer to the elven council of Qualinesti. She ordered Clash, one of her rangers, and four elven bowmen to take the adventurers to Qualinost to report to the leader of the council.

The journey to Qualinost was not without incident, first of all a stag beetle was slain, then on the second morning the party encountered a bear feasting on slain eves. Rather than avoid it, Clash angered it by shooting arrows at the beast while Darius charged, and then was almost slain as he was crushed in a fierce hug. By the end of the fight Clash too was badly wounded and the party was forced to carry the unconscious cleric Darius on a stretcher- there goes the medic! The bodies that the bear was snacking on were definitely elven and tracks nearby pointed to a large band of draconians and hobgoblins and possible some elven prisoners. The adventurers decided to hurry onwards instead.

Reaching Qualsinost the party were taken to see the Seeker of the Suns, who greeted his son Eric warmly. News was shared and then the council met to decide the fate of the wizard, Cod. It was determined that he was to go on the Elf-kins diet (lentils three times per day) and exercise more but by the do of this six week sentence the wizard had gained 15 pounds despite the diet and exercise.

Six weeks passed as the adventurers recovered from their recent ordeals (and trained). Darius shared his knowledge of the Old Gods with the elven clerics (the party deciding that this was in insurance policy vs an untimely death to Darius). Cod did his penance as directed by the elven council, Silvia trained, and Clash accompanied several warbands on raids vs the draconians. A new human joined the band, one who had escaped from the draconians, a wizard called, Hurat Smatter.

After several weeks The Seeker of the Suns asked the adventurers to an important council. Most of the elves were present and here it was revealed that the elves, threatened as the were by three dragon armies had decided to abandoned their homeland. The Seeker asked, well ordered Clash actually, that he lead the party into the Sla-Mori, a secret entrance to the fortress of Pax Tharkas to free the human prisoners and stage a revolt to draw off the dragon armies- and give te humans a chance for freedom. Yes, once more the elves are asking the humans to do their dirty work while they flee, run away!).

The party agreed after negotiating of course- the Seeker berated them for their greed but what else could he do?

At this point the Seeker bade farewell to the party. "I'm sure we'll meet again" he said solemnly.

"Yes, in modules, 6, 7, 8, and 9." quipped Cal (Darius).

DM Notes: At this point the game ended as we devolved into a philosophical debate about the use of a continual flame spell. Hurat wanting to cast a continual flame on his staff we debated whether the end would glow or the whole staff and thus make the world's biggest glow-stick?). From there we discussed other uses of the spell and whether or not casting it ones robes would make them look like they were aflame- a much safer way to make a Dread-pirate Roberts?

Why is it that these players players expect NPCs to give them magic items/equipment to aid them in their quests? I like to keep magic rareish so that those who have an item or two will do their damnest to keep hold of them, not give them away to some crazed adventurer on a one way mission to get themselves killed. Doesn't happen in the world's I run.

My other question is why is it that no matter what the campaign world, or fantasy book, when the going gets tough the elves bug out. What's up with elves?

Finally, character names: Eric, Bob and Gary seem to be the most popular names for elves these days, long gone (at least around here) are stocks tandards such as Elrond, Legolas and other such fanciful names. Oh well, at Least Dave is keeping to his tradition of naming all his PCs after bands.

Until next week.

Its been a while but here are the last couple of updates:

Week 8: Sla Mori

Date: Oct 14th 2007

Characters

Silvanus "Silvia" de Fenn: elf, female, fighter/wizard 4, N (Nigel)

Darius Davonque: human, male, cleric 5, LG (Cal)

Clash Morningwood, elf, male, ranger 5, NG (Dave)

Hurat Smatter, human, wizard 5, NG (Matt)

Eric: Elf, male knight 5, CG (Stephen)

Cod Skaps: human, male, wizard 5, N (Dale)

Durin Oakenshield, dwarf, male, fighter 5, NG (Mike)

The adventurers assembled early to set off to rescue the slaves in Pax Thakas, picking up some of their former comrades on the way and leading a procession of 6 mules.

The journey was not without incident. They discovered the survivor of a draconian raid who wanted them just before a number of draconian attacked. The dragon-men were no match for the adventurers though and quickly dispatched. The survivor, a former soldier of fortune known as Ebon didn't endear himself to the elven members of the party (who he referred to as half-breeds) and for a while it seemed that he was going to start a race-war at the very least, or get himself killed trying, but in the end tragedy was averted.

Unfortunately during the battle the mules scattered to the four winds. Cod sued a fly spell to track down two of them, including the one carrying his spellbook. Unfortunately just as he found the mule so did 3 trolls. The quick thinking Cod cast an unseen servant who managed to filch the book while he distracted the trolls with a fireball further up the valley. Spellbook recovered Cod left the area. Eric, the elven knight had managed ot find tow other mules but of the final two there was no sign.

The next day the party entered the Sla Mori after dodging three trolls munching on the remains of a mule. Silvia sued a knock spell to open the secret entrance and the party crept into the fortress of Pax Tharkas.

One room Durin opened a door only to release more than 40 zombies. Daruis' new god abandoned him (rolled a 1 to turn) but Hurat killed a few with a fireball (about 8) then Silvia killed another 21 with a very well placed fireball (27 hps dam- not bad, max was 30!) and cleared most of them.

Not long thereafter the party discovered the room where the massive chain that could seal of the fortress by releasing (literally) a mountain of rock, was housed.

DM Notes: A lot more was accomplished than this brief report indicates.

Week 9:

The party carried on with their infiltration of the fortress. Cod used a reduce spell to shrink Hurat and allow him to climb the chain into the central fortress. The wizard eventually came to a small opening overlooking a large throne room where the Dragon Highlord was engaged in conversation with his dragon and an underling. Hurat was eventually spotted and fled back to his companions but not before the dragon breathed fire at him.

Continuing onwards the party rescued an elven princess Laurana from a group of draconians after another fierce battle. From here they advanced into the fortress proper of the fortress and discovered a chamber where many children were playing. The children stopped their games to stare at the adventurers. Then a large, battle scarred dragon appeared and demanded that the adventurers leave her children.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 10:

The suspicious dragon asked where Marisa was as she usually attended to the needs of the children. Silvia apologised for the intrusion and the party retreated back the way they had come. They decided to try and find another way past the dragon so headed south. Down this long, wide corridor they spied two hobgoblins guarding large, bronze double doors. The hobgoblins were suspicious and did not believe that the party were mercenaries. When the party asked to see the Highlord one of the hobgoblins flung the double door open and yelled a warning to his master. Moments later the two hobgoblins were dead but then a fiery breath form the red dragon within engulfed those near the doorway, killing Hurat and Eric and melting the doors themselves into a pool of molten metal..

The party then ran back the way they had come, pursued by the dragon. The dwarf, Durin Oakenshield was almost bitten in half by the dragon but somehow managed to roll out of the way and escape (rolled a natural 20 on his dodge roll!). Fortunately the passage at the end of the hallway was too narrow for the dragon and the party was able to flee back to the secret entrance to the fortress.

They decided to hide in the chamber where the zombies had attacked them. Silvia cast a wizard lock spell on one of the doors near the far end of the chamber and the party hid in one at the other end, this door was also wizard locked. Barely an hour later they heard searchers enter the outer chamber and presently guttural voices ordered someone to break down the wizard locked door. Silvia leapt out and fireballed the far end of the passage, slaying about a dozen hobgoblins but the magical resistance of the two draconians with the hobgoblins meant that they were unaffected. These two creatures turned tail and fled to raise the alarm. At this point the party decide that it was time to leave the fortress altogether, and following the ranger Clash Morningwood sought safety in the pine covered valley outside. While Daruius was on watch a large red dragon soared over the valley but did not discover the location of the adventurers in a small cave.

The following morning a group of draconians and hobgoblins started a systematic search of the valley but the party managed to evade them and creep back into the fortress. They had a new plan- slay the first dragon and release the children, then find the children's parents and lead them in a revolt within the fortress- oh well better late than never.

Creeping through the fortress once more the party managed to avoid the guard patrols and make it safely to the children's chamber. Here they gathered the (rather obnoxious) urchins who refused to leave their dragon-friend. Presently the ancient, battle scarred dragon returned and a rather strange combat took place.

Clash used one of the children as a bargaining tool- holding it aloft and threatening to harm it unless the dragon left them alone. Most of the kids managed to flee through a door into another chamber though. Silvia, Durin and Darius then attacked the dragon. Laurana charged in to help but was cut down by Ebon. Darius and Durin then turned on the mercenary and he too was slain. With tow party members dead the adventurers finally turned their attention to the dragon. The dragon focused her attention on the elven ranger, Clash, who was holding the human child before him. Alas the dragon missed the ranger with a swipe of her claws and accidentally killed the child which threw her into a terrible rage. Moments later the ranger was dead and the dragon stomped the remains into a bloody pulp before turning her attention to her other tormentors. This had given Silvia, Darius and Durin time though and they finally managed to slay the dragon...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DM Notes: What a mess! That was the highest body count in one session in a long, long time! Using human children as human shields, the cleric lusting after the elven princess. The party self destructing instead of attacking the dragon. I guess that's what happens when you let two of the players whose characters had been killed earlier take over the NPCs for the rest of the night.

Not sure how they are going to get out of this one...
