Lost City of Barakus C&C Style!

Just started up a new Campaign using the C&C rules with LCoB. I also used the old Central Castings book from Task Force Games to liven up the character's backgrounds a bit (That's why the cleric has a Cooshee pup starting out). Please note I convert/borrow stuff from all kinds of sources in my gaming library (The Sawillan race and Crescent Isles reference is from Talislanta).

Session Log 1 A

We catch up to our band of hardy adventurers late in the evening at the Roadside Inn along the Trader's Way. Einya the Sawillan Bard and Simon the Ranger had just recently arrived in the port city of Endhome. They had travelled at sea aboard The Salty Dog under the famous Captain Stadgraf. Einya had befriended Simon during the long

sea journey from her distant homeland among the Cresent Isles. Simon had spent some time working as a sailor aboard the ship but had recently decided to embark on a different path. Simon took Einya along with him to meet some old companions, Saxifrage the elf rogue/wizard and Manti a half-elf cleric of Solanus.

The companions talked way into the night, quickly befriending the Barkeeper Badskull'r (named after a head injury from long ago). They talked of various legends and adventures and planned to start up bright and early the next morning.....

Little did they know where there path would lead them......

Session Log 1 B (Please note the rest of these logs may contain spoilers regarding the LCoB adventure, player's PLEASE keep out!!)

The night passed by uneventfully. The next morning the companions arose and went out to check on their animal companions, Einya in particular wanted to check on her blue Av (a very rare beast even back home), but Manti's young Cooshee pup had kept watch over all the animals during the night and all was well.

The group then noticed Badskull'r outside the front of the Inn in obvious distress, his floppy hat clearly shaking from his stress. They learned that his daughter Sally had apparently wandered off down to the sea caves. An unsafe place for such a young girl. Badskull'r was worried sick. He said the tide wouldn't be in until this evening but it was still too dangerous for his little girl.

The companions quickly offered to go find the young girl. A grateful Badskull'r sighed with relief.

Since the cliffs weren't that far, and horses wouldn't do well on slippery slopes they left their steeds at the stables. The group quickly made it to the cliffs. Simon checked about for tracks, he made out a trail where someone had traveled through fairly recently. They followed the trail and found it lead down a rocky cliff-side path. The companions quickly followed the trail, not wanting any harm to befall the young girl.....

Session Log 1C (Spoilers)

The companions carefully but quickly worked there way down the cliffs and found a series of sea caves. With the tide being low they were able to journey into one of the larger caves, Saxifrage commented he was glad that Badskull'r said the tide wouldn't be in until the evening, all of the companions could tell that much of the area would be flooded during high tide. They made their way into the caves, after some exploration they found a dry sandy area with an old overturned boat lying in the corner. Manti called out to the girl,"Sally!"...."Sally" but there was no answer. Simon spotted tracks leading to and from the boat heading off into another cavern. The tracks were clearly wet and not those of a little girl, but appeared to be those of a barefoot adult. Had Sally been kidnapped? Saxifrage carefully studied the boat looking for traps. His keen elvish hearing picked up on a faint buzzing from under the boat, the sand around the boat looked like it had been disturbed recently. Everyone got in a ready-for-anything position and Saxifrage flipped over the boat using Einya's trusty staff. A Giant Wasp flew out! Melee was engaged!! The combat was fierce but quick, the Wasp was unable to get an effective hit on anyone, although it's wicked looking poison stinger made all the companions nervous. It was Manti and her fearsome Mace that critically smashed the wasp to pieces, although all members of the band got in some decisive blows!

They then searched under the boat, apparently the wasp had burrowed up under it and was possibly working to build a nest. Einya found some wet clothes including a floppy hat that looked exactly like the one Badskull'r had been wearing! The others extrapolated that he had been lying to them and sought to trap them during high-tide in these chambers, while he stole their valuable mounts, especially the rare, blue Av. Muttering a curse Einya tucked the hat into her belt. But the tide was out, wasn't it?....Saxifrage's ears told him the truth...water could be heard coming in..the tide was returing! The caves would be flooded! Badskull'r had lied! Then they all heard evil laughter echoing off in the caves, malicious evil sounding laughter in a distinctly female voice and not the sounds of a young child!

Stay tuned true believers!!!

Session Log 1D (Spoilers)

Realizing the way in was flooding fast, the group headed off in pursuit of the laughter, Simon checked for tracks, only finding the wet barefoot trail, Manti the kind hearted cleric, still concerned that a child was possibly still involved, not yet ready to believe the worst about Badskull'r, said a prayer to Solanus and cast Detect Good. The young cleric scanned about the caves in their vicinity. She detected nothing, there was either no child or she wasn't close enough for Manti to detect.....Saxifrage commented that if they had to they could use the old boat to escape, Simon with his sailing experience knew it would be possible but still dangerous to be on a boat near the rocks at high tide. They pressed onward....finding another cavern with signs of an old campsite, unused for an untold period of time. The wicked laughter continued in the distance, taunting them forward...

They eventually came upon an underground waterway/chasm where seawater came all the way up to the rocky ledge and lead into more chambers across the water. In one flooded cave inparticular they heard the vile laughter. Manti giving up on Detecting anything Good down here, chanted a prayer of Detect Evil...In the flooded cave she picked up a distinct aura of something vile and nasty moving about.

Just then, Manti's elven heritage showed and using her sharp senses she spotted a large shark swimming by, heading in a direction opposite the evil aura. Suddenly from another cave something swam out of the deeps towards the shark, the water churned and became bloody...Manti's Detect Evil prayer was still in effect something vile and nasty was clearly turning the shark into lunch. The evil "something" savagely ate the shark and swam back into it's dark watery cave. Einya with her keen avian-like eyes could make out something green and scaley! These caves were dangerous indeed!

Saxifrage came up with a bold plan, ignoring the evil laughter from the flooded cave, and hoping the other sea beast had a belly full of shark. Saxifrage had the group tie together their ropes, he then cast Spider Climb on himself and quickly ran across the ceiling. He securely tied the rope to the other side of the watery crevasse and Simon did the same on his side. Simon and Saxifrage kept watch while Einya quickly climbed accross.

Manti started to cross, half-way over disaster struck!! Out of the flooded cave the source of the laughter was revealed! The water churned and a humanoid shape surged through the water heading directly for Manti! Saxifrage, Einya and Simon shouted a warning! Simon had his trusty bow out and an arrow ready! But Manti was helpless dangling over the water climbing as quickly as she could...but she wouldn't be fast enough!

To be continued.....

Session Log 1 E (Spoilers)

Faster than the companions could even have imagined a humanoid figure swam from the flooded darkened cave and leapt up out of the water filled passage directly below Manti! Leaping up out of the water a foul humanoid figure dug viscious claws into Manti's back, it was only through the strength of her faith that she held onto the rope, Manti whispered a prayer to Solanus and forced herself to keep pulling herself accross, all the while great rivulets of blood poured from her back!

Saxifrage got a good look at the creature...a look that he will never forget, the creature while clearly feminine was hideous in the extreme, when he saw the she-creature's face he felt a horror that words can't describe. The face of the she-creature dug into his very core. He

felt much of his strength drain away, only by force of will did he not sink to his knees! Einya standing to the side a bit fortunately failed to get a full look at the creature's face she instead fired an arrow from her shortbow at the creature! Simon on the opposite side fired an arrow as well and struck the creature. Simon having been a sailor in his previous career, knew what they were facing...a dreaded Sea Hag!!

Saxifrage recovered enough strength to help Manti the rest of the way accross, The Sea Hag wounded and angry launched her next attack at Simon! Arrows flew all about the hag from the companions, some struck the hag some did not. Manti prayed to Solanus for healing and found herself restored, Simon was alone on the opposite side with an angry Sea Hag in his face...Then Simon felt the Sea Hag's full power she unleashed her Evil Eye upon him....Simon was overwhelmed by her attack...drool running down his chin...The Hag then turned to the others and indicated her true intentions for Simon! He would be her.....*shudder*..mate!

truly a fate worse than death!!! Manti enraged started throwing stones at the hag, having no other ranged attack available...Manti caught a full look at the Hag, but through her faith shrugged off the strength draining effects that had weakened Saxifrage. The Hag made some kind of eerie call and the waters on the opposite end of the channel started churning..the site where the shark had been eaten just minutes earlier. Einya carefully chose her next instrument and played like never before... The hag though injured was still a threat and proceeded to try and take the dazed and drooling Simon off to her lair! Saxifrage inspired by Einya's Epic song raced across the rope (via Spider Climb) leapt out at the Sea Hag catching her from behind and unawares and beheaded the horrible creature before she even knew what had happened! He then collapsed to the ground panting and breathless.

But our heroes were not out of danger just yet!!!! From the churning waters a large green warty monster emerged...it looked like a Troll, but this fearsome beast was aquatic! A Scrag! They all gasped! all save Simon who was clueless to everything at this point. Saxifrage struggled to pull himself up, weakened... tired...dimly he realized this Scrag wasn't full grown ...it was a juvenile, but still more than a match for the the party. The Scrag leapt out of the water at Manti and Einya, lashing out at the two brave women, but as luck would have it (and Einya was indeed lucky) the troll missed. Both fought defensively knowing the troll could rend them limb from limb should it connect. Saxifrage knowing they were all in grave danger came upon a plan! He picked up the severed Hag's head and by deft spell use sent the hag head to bounce around the juvenile scrag and scold it. Manti and Einya joined in the bluff, Einya putting her performance skills to the utmost test. Simon was still dazed at this point, though his eyes were perhaps clearing a bit. The troll was confused, the hag head seemed to be telling it to return to it's cave...but? unsure...the young troll dove back into the water and swam back into it's cave. Manti had to be restained by Einya, for she still wanted to attack the evil creature, but realizing their weakened state she stopped herself.

Simon would recover but he was still not himself, they helped him accross, and Saxifrage searched the Hag's lair and found a beautiful statue of a mermaid with gemstones for eyes.

Casting a arcane detection spell the party was surprised to learn that while the statue was not magical the floppy hat that Einya had tucked into her belt from under the old boat was indeed magical! Saxifrage gave a look on comprhension, but he kept his thoughts to himself.

The party proceeded to work their way out of the caves, startled some lizard beast that fled into deeper crevasses and they eventually came to the open air. They headed back to the inn, not really knowing what to make of what had happened. Where for certain did Badskull'r figure in all of this? They slowly made there way back to the Roadside Inn, the smells of breakfast wafted out through an open window. All stood surprised (some more than others) When Badskull'r looked up from behind the bar and commented,"You almost missed breakfast!!" They asked him about his daughter, with a confused look he said he had never had any children. The companions knew then that the Sea Hag had tricked them all along, she had somehow impersonated Badskull'r and tried to lead them all to their deaths. Badskull'r was

both surprised and amazed by their tale, while not the brightest tool in the shed he figured that explained why on occassion a lone traveler might have dissappeared and left his mount in the stable. Badskull'r offered to let them stay at the Roadside Inn until they had healed up, free of charge, both Simon and Saxifrage were going to need alot of rest to recover from their encounters in the Sea Caves!

Session 2 Log part 1

The group rested up at the Roadside Inn, both Simon and Saxifrage were pretty wasted after the fight with the Sea Hag. The young stablehand Johann was constantly around wanting to hear about their heroic tale, Badskull'r often had to remind the young lad that he had other duties to tend to at the Inn. Manti spent her down time in prayer and also training her Cooshee pup. Einya mesmerized the Inn guests with her amazing story telling, she also spent some time working with her Av, the blue horse was proving to be quite intelligent.

Badskull'r expressed a new concern to the group. All knew about the nearby Beacon at Enon Tor, it was just up the road a bit. A few days ago a merchant caravan had been traveling along the Trader's Way and noticed an odd shimmering effect taking place around the beacon tower. Then for the past several nights (while the group were recovering) the beacon had not been lit (something that hadn't occurred in the fifteen years of its existence), also a fog had rolled in, resulting in the beacon's fog horn blowing...the problem was it blew all the next day...then into the night and then just as suddenly stopped! The group knew this could be a real hazard for local sea vessels. The beacon was a warning to nearby sea vessels about the dangerous shoals nearby, without the beacon a tragedy could occur. The beacon was tended by Karthedon the wizard, he'd apparently worked out some kind of deal with the city of Endhome fifteen or so years ago. Johann volunteered that he'd been up near the beacon once, saw some odd lookin' men "shuffling" about, got scared and left, he offered (when Badskull'r wasn't looking) to take the group to the Beacon. They accepted but decided Manti needed better armor first. The Sea Hag had too readily torn through her older armor. Concerned that time was of the essence they opted not to risk taking a trip all the way to Endhome to buy better armor. Making inquiries amongst the Inn's guests, Einya and Manti met a Merchant Gentleman named Samuel (Sam for short), his heavy drooping red mustache, armored leather grey-coat and hand-crossbow made him look quite the character. Sam became thoroughly enraptured with Einya, they chatted for quite some time, with Einya perfectly duplicating Sam's heavy Hexan drawl, much to the group's surprise. He indicated he had some quality armor but was reluctant to part with it, however with Einya's persuasive talents, and Manti's pleas he not only sold them a suit of quality scale mail but they got it for a great price.

Stocked up, healed up and better armored the group worked out a meeting point to hook up with Johann (he didn't want to get in trouble with Badskull'r) and headed out for adventure!

Well I've gotten behind on my logs, so I'll just have to do a very brief recap....

Session two continued.....

The party successfully completed the Beacon at Enon Tor adventure. I highly recommend this adventure. They had a couple of close calls, but overall were very successful.

A new player joined the group a rather interesting dwarf in search of a wife.

Session three was mostly role-playing. They departed the Beacon, ran into a curious sage-like fellow on the road, named Gaxy Gygar! He gave them some minor clues about checking into a certain ruined dungeon in the nearby hills, they left Gygar and returned to the Roadside Inn, regaled the locals with their heroic tales, dealt with a difficult heatwave (great way to make a party nervous is too make it too hot to wear armor), fought a swarm of wasps...ran into a crazed man on the road who was apparently having a bad mushroom induced hallucination and finally made it back to the city of Endhome. Glorin the dwarf gained an audience with Bragger in Endhome and told him of the great service the party did by restoring the Beacon. Bragger was skeptical at first but after checking out Glorin's tale, rewarded the party for it's efforts. Saxifrage and company were heading back to meet up with Glorin (who was having a blast at local tavern), when they spotted a strange looking old man in raggedy clothes sitting on a pack..

The man disappeared, but left behind his pack.... everyone but Saxifrage gave the pack a wide berth, but Sax's curiosity got the best of him...

He stooped down to check out the pack, when out of nowhere the old man returned with a truly mad look in his eye, he grabbed Saxifrage by the arm...jabbered a bunch of gibberish at him...and then disappeared....

Saxifrage was staggered...stunned...confused...it was soon thereafter he felt different..and not in a good way.....a passerby mumbled something about "Meerim...Meerim the Mad"

To be continued....

Session 3 continued....

Well Saxifrage found himself to be cursed (which makes him thrice cursed actually but that's another story), he found himself having trouble recalling his spells. lost one completely in fact couldn't even rememorize it! Sax was panicked. After much asking around, spent hours pouring over dusty tomes in the Academy's scriptorium he even checked in with a Midnite Sage at the wizard's academy. The party learned that Meerim the Mad was a crazy wizard seen hereabouts from time to time, his master Iyarim (a wizard of note) developed an insidious spell the Curse of forgetfulness. The party learned that Iyarim some time ago set up a lair in an old crypt in the Dusk Moon Hills north of Endhome. Atop the Crypt was a large Iron Statue, dubbed by locals as the IronGard. Iyarim, said to be a walker of the planes, hasn't been seen in many years, although his apprentice Meerim has been seen many times over the years in and around Endhome, becoming more and more unstable as time has progressed.

Manti thinking her temple could help brought Sax to the temple of Solanus, Father Beamus welcomed them, although Saxifrage seemed very ill at ease in the temple, muttering under his breath at times and looking about nervously, almost acting as though he expected to be hurled out on the street at any moment. Manti was quite taken aback by some of Father Beamus' comments, behaviours...he seemed very different, from the priest that she knew before. The Father asked Manti if she had had time to check into his concerns involving a certain "other" temple. She indicated that she had not done so. The two left the Temple, Father Beamus was unable to help, although he did want Manti to stay and "visit" longer....

Regrouping the party rested up and headed out to the Dusk Moon hills to find The Crypt of the IronGard. Traffic along the road was busy but unremarkable.

They stopped at the Roadside Inn, were warmly geeted by Badskull'r (who continued to give them a discount for their slaying of the Sea Hag). Einya entertained the other guests with her bardic skills. They heard of some trouble with the local bandit gang, The GreenTree Bandits, there was talk of orcs, which perked up Glorin's interest. Glorin bemoaned the fact that a certain Dwarven maid at the Wizard's Academy in Endhome had yet to respond to his inquiries of courtship...

The party talked with the Inn's local carpenter/hunter/ranger Sven Svensson who mentioned there had been some sightings of a Dragon to the North, but most folks didn't take such talk seriously. He said he knew where the IronGard was located but couldn't guide them there, the Stable roof needed repair...he did give them fairly good directions however. They would have to journey up Fool's Pass! *insert Dum dum dum music here*

I love LCOB! I'll have to make it part of my next campaign.

Keep up the journal, I know how hard it is to do so, I have failed many times.
