Optional weapon bonuses versus armor class?

Post by garydee »

I saw this in the table of contents of the Adventurer's Backpack. What is it?

this simulates different weapons types effectiveness against certain armor types. Piercing weapons are effective against chain mail, that sort of thing

I tried it once, back in the days of 1st ed. It wasn't particularly difficult, but it was "one more thing" to track. Good for the simulationist, I suppose

While the concept is fun to explore, I personally find that, when I want to do something like this, I tend toward tech level vs. tech level so that a stone age axe vs. a steel age plate armor gets a lower chance to score damage (-to hit) but a steel age axe vs. stone age hide gets a bonus... usually.

I use 6 tech levels and it tends to modify by +/- 1 for each 2 levels, to a max of + (or -) 3 at extremes. This gives a little wiggle room when something is "era near."

Special items, like a stone age axe of penetration would ignore tech level adjustments (or, probably, be treated as tech level 6, regardless.)

It also lets me give "expert" gear a slightly higher tech level, if desired which gives more options for what it means to be "expert crafted."

But, that's only when I feel up to it.
