Arms & Armor

Throughout mankinds history, warfare has been an endemic part of his culture. From tribal beginnings to the rise of the Roman Imperium and beyond, man has waged war. The tools of this brutal trade have changed over the years, from simple stone to complex metal. They have changed as necessity dictates and experience allows. These are the arms and armor of the early medieval period of Western Europe.

Anyone get it in yet? I ordered mine on Friday, and I'm praying for it to be on my porch when I get home.

Mine arrived last week. I was able to pass around to the kids so they could see just what some of the things they were using looked like during our Saturday game.

This was held up one week in distribution. I believe it will be announced tonight as available for sale.

The PDF will go up next week I suspect. Maybe this weekend.

Not yet (as of Fri morning ). but I noticed a Black Librum advertised as a future sourcebook there. I didn't hear mention of it in the thread for 2009.

You know those mentions of The Haunted Highlands? This is part of that.

Wait a sec. Is Black Libram available as well? Or am I misunderstanding? Probably the latter.

Heh. And it was actually mentioned specifically in the 2nd and 3rd posts of the 2009 thread.

I got mine in the mail yesterday, and it is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best book on weapons and armor I've ever seen . It may not have as much breadth as some of the "and the kitchen sink" books, but it it has a depth that is unmatched. For the first time, it's actually important to buy a helm for instance, rather than just assume that it comes with the suit (on that, am I right to assume that the bonuses the helms give are solely for called shots to the head as per the PH?). And the explanations given for the uses and developments of the weapons is a major plus as well.

As are the new weapons introduced -- I see a future in my Castle Zagyg campaign for the Mortuary Sword in particular...

Are there any plans for a second and subesequent volumes for Renaissance weapons and then Ancient and Asian weapons?

Also, in later printings, is there any chance of making the cover stock a mite thicker? The cover does seem a little bit flimsy to me (it seems to be of the same thickness of the cover of The Crusader -- fine for a magazine, but not quite hefty enough for a book that looks like it's going to see a major amount of use in my games)

Arms and Armor 2 is already in the works and on schedule for a summer release. This will carry us through the next 500 years of European weapons. And we do have ancient arms and armor in play and one on exoctic (for lack of a better word), such as Myan etc.

Interesting on the cover stock. We did switch cover stock and it seemed slightly slimmer to us, but my paper rep swore up and down (he's a good guy) that it was the same, just cut different so it was 'smooth' or some such. Let me check into this more. A5, DB5, Arms and Armor have been printed on his cover stock.

Thanks!

Steve

I have a question. On the caltrops entry, there is a bit of text that got overridden by the picture of the cat o' nine tails. Is there any way I can find out what it said?

Ok, keep in mind this is from my MS; I haven't seen the final product yet. But this is what I had...

Name: Caltrops

Length: Triskellion of several 4-6 inch prongs

Weight: 1 lb (1) for 5 Caltrops

Wield: One Handed

Cost: 2 gold pieces for 5 Caltrops

Availability: 40%

Damage: 1D3

DMG/SIZ: Small 1D3/Large 1D4

Inflict: Piercing

Intent: Anyone crossing an area with caltrops strewn about must make a successful Dexterity check in order to avoid damage, with the number of Caltrops being the negative modifier to the check. If failed, the victim automatically takes the noted damage and has their movement rate reduced by 25%. This effect is cumulative if repeated Caltrops are stepped on.

The Caltrop is a collection of metal spikes with their ends welded together in a triskellion pattern similar to childrens toy jacks. Unlike the toy, the spikes are quite sharp and are strewn on the ground in order to deter an enemy advancing or pursuing the weapons user. They are especially useful against horses, and each Caltrop does +1 hit point of damage to any horses that fail a Dexterity check.

HTH,

Mike

That looks about right Mike. Thanks for posting that...now to go make a few notes in my book.
Steve, the Arms and Armor books covering different periods of European weapons and armor, as well other cultures (african, egytpian, central american, chinese/japanese) would be fantastic. I'm still gonna bug you to try to cover all the weapons and armor in the PHB, but I knew it couldn't have been done in the first release.

Received my copy today. Nice book. I was especially happy to see puppy protection included. That made me smile, and now makes me want to find a war woof and sup him up with brilliant barding of barking!
