Oozes and AC

Post by Lobo316 »

So, I am noticing that certain oozes (the black pudding and the gray ooze) have really low ACs (3 and 5, respectivley). However, when looking at the D&D versions (2e) they ACs were higher (all things being equal). The Gray, for example, should conver to roughly a 12, and the black pudding should be around a 14.

How are folks handing oozes in thier games as far as AC's go? I guess I can see why they are easy to hit, but a 5? Really? or a 3? I guess I'm just not sure where these numbers come from.

And how do you attack any ooze that has a PC engulfed? I was going with attack as normal, if you miss by more than 4, you have a chance of hitting the PC, but I'm thinking that maybe it would be better to simply have the engulfed target suffer half of any and all damage from crushing, stabbing or hacking attacks on the ooze (so the best bet would be fire or something, just held up to the ooze).

Curious to hear some feedback on this one.

I always thought that those were 1st Edition type AC's and converted accordingly.

Wild guess here, but perhaps the really good AC is because the thing is so squishy and hard to damage, so rather than pumping up the HP, this abstraction covers it.

edit: if you meant in C&C the AC is 3, then it's just that easy to hit, like the side of a barn. I think the Gelatinous cube has a single digit AC, but also a +10 to hide, so because it's clear, it's hard to see until someone stumbles into it, then it's like, "oh look a giant frickin' cube of jelly!" and then since you know where it is, and its the size of the whole hallway, it's pretty hard to miss.

or something.

If I remember correctly, I lost my very 1st PC to a "cube". :(

It is easy to hit an ooze, but in some cases... its a bad idea to. It encourages idiocy to try to beat up something that can, 1) get more powerful for it, and 2) dissolve or eat you whenever you touch it.

Ooze isn't worried about dodging...only eating. And you are food. *evil grin*
