Wanted: Stormbringer

Post by Relaxo »

Anyone got an extra copy? preferably the one that looks like this:

Image

I can trade it for the first 5 Greyhawk novels, if you like:

They're in Good to Very Good condition, I'd say. Some spines show read-wear, but bindings all intact.

Consider "Chicks in Chainmail" a free bonus. :-)

Wish I could help you... The only Stormbringer / Elric books I have are the recent compilations (thought quite definitive). Worth picking them up and recent enough to find with ease.

Moriarty, would you please mind running down the compilations you found? My local book store is more into modern fantasy and I have only read the very First Elric book, though I would love to read more. Looking on Wikipedia is downright confusing, though I suspect I want the internal chronology. Amazon has tons of books and I am not sure which ones I want. If this is too time consuming, please disregard it and I'll continue to narrow it down.

In one of the defunct FLGS stores I frequented in Connecticut growing up, they had a nice replica of Stormbringer on the wall. I asked them to let me look at it, which they did. They seemed quite proud of the fact it was made of ebony, but I almost hated to tell them that "ebony" in the sense Moorcock used it referred to the color of the sword, not the material it was made from.

It cannot eat what I do not have.

Raven Armoury in England sold replicas of both Stormbringer and Mournblade.

Image
Stormbringer was available for the low price of £4,788 (approx. $7,500) with VAT.
36-inch blade with etched runes on both sides of the blade.
Guard and pommel of blackened steel set with Lapis Lazuli.
Limited edition of 250.

Image
Mournblade was available for the low price of £4,560 (approx. $7,200) with VAT.
36-inch blade with etched runes on both sides of the blade.
Guard and pommel of blackened bronze set with Garnet.
Limited edition of 50.

Each replica was hand-forged, not cast, which is why the price is so high. These replicas were designed by Michael Moorcock and are thus his definitive vision for the twin swords. Raven Armoury also offered two etching variants: runes covering half the blade on both sides (see the picture of Mournblade) or full-length runes on one side only. Going with one of the variants cut approximately £500 ($785) off the price.

In addition to the standard models, each sword had a special run of thirteen made.

Image
Available for the low price of £5,988 (approx. $9,400) with VAT.
56-inch blade with etched runes on both sides of the blade.
Guard and pommel of steel with center band inset with Black Sapphires.
Limited Edition of 13.

This sword is approved by Michael Moorcock, but was designed by Rodney Matthews.

Hi! I would be glad to help! The series I was referring to was the recent 'Elric' series which comprises a total of six volumes which make up the 'Chronicles of the Last Emperor of Melnibone'. The character and his iconic sword was revisited many times over the years featuring in magazines and books. Making the matter perhaps more confusing is the other stories which happen in the multiverse involving the continual struggle of Order and Chaos and other Eternal Champions (Elric being but one). Here are links to the six books:

http://www.amazon.com/Elric-Stealer-Chr ... ords=Elric
http://www.amazon.com/Elric-Tanelorn-Ch ... ords=Elric
http://www.amazon.com/Elric-Sleeping-So ... ords=Elric
http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Elric-Chroni ... ords=Elric
http://www.amazon.com/Elric-Realms-Chro ... ords=Elric
http://www.amazon.com/Elric-Swords-Chro ... ords=Elric

The have been other compilations done over the years and I even know the one that Bill was referring to (a friend of mine has it but likely wouldn't part with it given that he ALSO has all those Greyhawk books). Of course, the beauty with this latest compilation series is how much in encompasses having been done just recently and is pretty much considered (by Moorcock himself) the definitive one to have.

I'm not sure if that helps you and it has been a few years since I last read the book but I couldn't recommend a better alternative to this set.

Bill... I'd love to have them but I'll naturally pay what it will actually cost to ship to Canada! (I suspect it will be more than $6).

The Elric series is one of my all-time favorites, but if I was to reccommend one single volume it would be the one below:

This one (the first in the series) contains all five original short stories from the 1963 Stealer of Souls book as well as the four novelettes from the 1965 Stormbringer book.

If you look at Gary's "Appendix N" list, you'll find that he specifically mentions both Stealer of Souls and Stormbringer (as opposed to "the Elric series") and it's neat to see that both are contained in one inexpensive paperback.

Also, note the cool cover:
