Real life inspiration for a cool monster – Vampire squid

Post by Lurker »

I was goofing off (and avoiding checking my cadets’ tests and starting work on my paper) and saw this on the news: The vampire squid … It just screams make me into a monster !!!

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2012/09/ ... p=features

I don’t have any game books here to base the stats off of, so this is a quick bare bones version

I’d change it from being a foot ish long into being man sized so medium

I’d give it the standard abilities of a squid or octopus (again no books to refer to on those)

I’d give it a bonus to ambush attacks – those filaments and its bioluminescence & its use of this self-made light to blend in

I’d increase the damage from its tentacles by at least 1 die type (maybe even double it) because those teeth on the tentacles just look nasty!!!!

And finally, I’d allow an additional 1 point of con draining if 3 grab attacks hit and the player fails a str check – Hay it has to earn its vampire name somehow.

Well my cadets are marching up to the door, got to get back to work

I just looked that thing up on Wikipedia and all I can picture other than death incarnate is that it is the kraken as it should be shrunk down for family pet size. Then given as a gift and when the human prey is least suspecting it, the vampire squid launches itself out of the tank latching onto the face of its prey eating all the tissue from the skull leaving scratch pieces of cleaned off skull laying around the victims bleeding body
