Rogue's tools ~ what are they?

Post by Tadhg »

The PH mentions picks, blank keys (I assume this what we call skeleton keys), wires or other appropriate tools.

I'm thinking the following would be included:

awl
chisel
crowbar/prybar/jimmy
metal file
razor
metal saw
hammer
knife
nippers
chain cutters

All small and perhaps carried in some type of cloth rollup bag.

Have I missed anything?

The Rogue's Tools cost 30 GP, so I believe that amount would cover all the above.

I welcome your thoughts and comments!

You would have a range of files, because you need the size to match the size of the teeth of the key you are trying to copy/duplicate. You would also need some kind of hearing aid, for figuring out tumbler locks. A glass jar works pretty darn well.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

You forgot "the girl, the gold watch, and everything (else).. what a list, you'd need a fighter to carry all that...

I would add the small bag of fine dust, a small bag of iron filings, mustard powder, and talc/chalk
Wow, Another Natural One! You guys are a sink hole for luck. Stay away from my dice.

Would you consider your list in a Rogue's Toolbox or as a list of all the Rogue's tools in his trade?

Not to reply for him, I would think those are options in the thieves guild.. and each tool kit is a typical or sample there of limited by only size and weight... now if the thief had a tool kit of holding... ;}

These would be things available but unlikely to be in every kit. I compiled the list to randomly determine what one might find when searching the corpse of a failed thief, among other reasons. I normally have 3-5 of them "standard" and then 1d4 added. A smart thief plans ahead... that's why I give all C&C rogues the Arduin burglary (and some others) ability.

I do not want you in my neighborhood. And don't forget a good city rake. They'll go into much shallower keyways than a W rake or even a snake. :)

That's OK. Almost no one wants me in their neighborhood. I am not exactly Mr. Rogers...

Scissors / shears, too, might want to be added (if I forgot them). Many "locks" in the old days were not much more than rope knots.

I had forgotten this from the AD&D 2E Arms & Equipment Guide:

A thieves’ toolkit comes in a flat, folding leather case or a rolled suede case and includes dozens of small tools. A set normally contains 20 wires, ranging in gauge from the thickness of string to that of a slender pencil. Each is approximately 12 to 18 inches long.
These are used to poke into small holes or push trigger or buttons from a short distance. The toolkit also includes a set of 12 skeleton keys that fit many standard locks. Also in the set are several screwdrivers, a wire clipper, clamps, and pincers ranging in three sizes from minute, small, and average. Bundled with this package may be a small chisel, hacksaw, and hammer.

In some of the more deluxe toolkits, small vials of metal-eating acids may be found, along with magnifying glasses and slender pieces of high-tempered steel that are used as miniature crowbars. A thieves’ toolkit will range in weight and size greatly, depending on the initial cost of the package.

Basic 30 gp
Deluxe 50 gp

Ooohh, acids that eat metal!!! Oh yeah, I'll take a few vials of those!! :)

Metal-eating acids? Been awhile since I've read the Thieves book, but I'd be leery of that in my game. It's like those players who stock up on oil for some reason or another.

Those would be rare and expensive in my game.

I imagine there would be times when it's beneficial to know specifically what rogue's tools you have, but otherwise..."I use my rogue tools to unlock a door/disable a trap." GM: "Make the appropriate attribute roll. Prime or secondary?" Game keeps moving along. That said, if a player comes up with something inventive as it relates to specific tool in the kit, I'd be game to roll with that.

About 10' long. It's a real bitch to drag through a dungeon. But, when you need to, 'Git 'er done', it's the tool to use. :)
