Rhu's Sunday night playtest ~ Gnomeworld

Post by Tadhg »

The Sheriff of Gnometown ~ the first mini adventure of the module.

Introduction:

Klaakagird is a small hamlet southeast in Scandia not far from the sea. It’s a new hamlet where some prospectors found a small vein of gold which is extremely rare in this part of Jorde and the demand for it is huge.

And so the hamlet grew quickly as other small veins were found. The inhabitants were mostly gnomes but groups of halflings and dwarves found their way here as well ~ during the so called gold rush. Elves lived in the deep forests and rarely come into to town.

A posse of gnome troublemakers arrived to the area and claim jumped two Halfling brothers and drove them out. They were led by Rawley Clyborne, a heavy set gnome who seemed quite gregarious and had a loyal band of gnome riders at his side.
His group worked the mine and found a medium sized vein which favored them with wealth and prestige in the town.

Rawley began to assert himself in the hamlet that was now a town and offered protection to prospectors from claim jumpers. He also promised protection from nearby hobgoblin raiders who sometimes stole cows or pigs from the local farmers.

He and some of his men, had a type of weapon that the local gnomes had never seen. They looked like a hand crossbow, but would explode and fire a bullet with extreme force and could pierce some armors. Bilton Treelip, the owner of the general store said that he heard that tinker gnomes could manufacture such mechanical weapons.

The mayor of Klaakagird initially opposed Rawley and his men relying on a few gnome town guards who were overmatched. The town’s residents were frightened of the big gnome and they could do little to support the major and many believed that it would be better to ally themselves with the new power.

Rawley persuaded the town folk to elect him sheriff which he accepted with glee.
He appointed many of his posse as deputies and then after a time of settling in, Rawley began his reign of terror.

The two halfling brothers worked another area in the hills and found a silver vein, also incredibly rare in those parts – more than gold it seems.
The sheriff wanted that mine, but the Halflings were ready for him this time. They trapped and set guards to their claim and were able to hold off the sheriff.

The big gnome responded by abducting the children of the halflings and the children of many gnome families from the school house. The mayor, Wilbur Rugbottom was then thrown in gaol on a trumped up charge of inciting riots.

Rawley let the citizens of Gnometown know that the town name has changed and that he will pledge to find the missing children if the people will give up their precious gems. Signs are changed throughout . . . Rawleytown.

Gringnr is a bit of an enigma to many, and just plain unliked by many others. Because he knows he is is of below average intelligence, he tends to avoid conversation, causing many to see him as aloof or impolite. He is also almost single-mindedly devoted to his deity, which causes others to see him as greedy or conniving. In truth, Gringnr lacks the brains to play at any real guile. He is straightforward, if quiet, and free of pretense. In addition, he is possessed of a simple wisdom beyond his limited intelligence, one that manifests itself in honesty and kindness, even though his religious zeal might cause others to doubt those qualities. Think a Dwarven Forrest Gump, only a little bit smarter and a whole lot greedier.

Sturdy of body if not keen of mind, Gringnr at an early age threw himself headlong into one of the few life paths that did not demand too much of his unimpressive intellect: religion. He is a cleric of the Dwarven god Mithril(from the C&C "of Gods & Monsters" book). Since much of Gringnr's personality is informed by his religion, it may be a good idea to talk about the deity briefly:
Dwarves take a great deal of time thinking about dragons and vast treasures. Eventually all of that speculation turned into a dwarven god that was a dragon concerned with treasure. Mithril, the dragon, is made out of the precious metal and is the example for all good dwarves in collecting and hoarding huge amounts of treasure. When dwarves sacrifice to Mithril, they see their gold and gems vanish and know that the sacrifice is in a place no rogue or giant can ever find. This gives the worshiper great satisfaction. Dwarves are encouraged to fabricate difficult-to-open strongboxes and complex and massive vaults to store their treasures. Even the pouches and backpacks they use are supposed to have traps to stop thefts.
Clerics of Mithril seek treasure above all else, but are of good alignment and do have priorities beyond aqusition of precious metals and gems. Because they seek these things incessantly, however, they are often viewed as greedy and conniving, and their kindness will often be viewed with skepticism.

Clerics of Mithril are forbidden to pay for anything with gold, and their unwillingness to part with it furthers the impression that they are indeed greedy.

Gringnr himself does not question the will of Mithril. Nor does he question his fellow clergy. His devotion to his faith and the reptilian god viewed with suspicion by so many, is absolute, even over his devotion to his race and his tribe. He is convinced that he is working for the greater good, and that the way of Mithril is just and true. He may not entirely understand the requirements of his faith, but rather than question them, he prays for greater understanding. When faced with questions or criticism of his faith, he simply reflects upon the peace and serenity that following the tenets of Mithril have brought him, or upon the good that he has done for others in Mithril's name.

Is Mithril a false god? Is the faith actually a cult of greed that seeks to deceive adherents and unbelievers alike? Are the clergy of Mithril a corrupt cabal, whose sinister secrets are known to but a very few learned elders? Who can say? Certainly not Gringnr. But regardless, he will continue to seek treasure for the Dragon god, and to undertake whatever adventures are necessary to do so, helping any who need it on the way.

Session I - The Sheriff of Gnometown

The adventurers:

Gringnr as:

Gringnr, the mighty dwarf cleric

Penny as:

Penny-Whistle Scrubroot, the practical and wise gnome cleric who now has the bloodlust up for evil monsters threatening her beautiful planet Jorde!

also as NPCs ~

Elderberry Scrubroot, the wildly bold and audacious gnome rogue
and
Iko Treeblight, gnome wizard

The action:

After the recovery of King Argenteus' silver dragon egg, the adventurers enjoyed some well needed rest and relaxation ~ beginning with a celebration party and dinner up in the King's lair up in the peak.

The group spend quality time at the abbey - reading, learning and training at various tasks that will help them in their future endeavors.

One day, the abbey is visited by Gaston the Bard along with Laroo and Nils. Gaston tells the party of the frontier hamlet of Klaakagird and how gold and silver have been discovered there, but there is some trouble. A note from his cousin in that town reveals the situation and that the town gnomes have appealed to Gaston for help.

The party eagerly volunteers to journey to Gnometown and investigate the situation and attempt to find the children.

Nils arranges for Murlynd to come to Fountains Abbey for firearms training to those in the group who would be interested in such weaponry.

Two scatter guns and two revolvers are presented and the training commenced for Iko and Elderberry.

The adventurers rode from the abbey along the trail that leads to the ice crystal grotto and then headed southeast through the sylvan forest. They only encountered forest creatures along the way and rode into the Town of Klaakagird.

Finding the nearest saloon, the group enters to wet their whistles and get some hot grub. They are greeted by the bartender, Barloon and Miss Bella who shows them to a large table. Ole Chester is noodling on the piano and the place seems very lively at midday.

The groups orders a good bottle of whiskey and asks Bella what's for lunch. She tells you that Jed, the cook has just rustled up a big pot of slumgullion and that everyone who comes in loves it, especially Sheriff Rawley.

The heroes enjoy their bowls of stew along with hot bread and cheese whilst drinking shots of the excellent fire amber.

Just then the doors of the saloon swing open and in walks the Sheriff along with a deputy and another shifty looking varmint. The deputy and the varmint head over to the bar, but the Sheriff stops at the table of the party and introduces himself.

He seems friendly enough and thanks Penny when she pours him a drink. Rawley then asks the group where they're heading almost as though he hopes this is not their final destination.

Penny tells him that they are interested in prospecting as the word is getting around about gold and silver strikes.

"Well that's fine", he says . . . 'Let me know if you find any gold or silver and I can help y'all get started. I've been mining for about 6 months and have been quite successful!"

The adventurers thank him and he gets up and tells the group that it was a pleasure to meet everyone and then walks over to the bar where his deputy is.

After lunch, the party heads over to the general store where they meet Bilton Treelip. He tells the group that many in town are now upset with the Sheriff and suspicious of him and his men. Bilton and many others think he might know something about the missing children. He thinks someone is hiding them in one of the abandoned mines as hostages so they can get gems from the parents in return for their sons and daughters.

The group get on their horses and ride north on Dodge Street past the cemetary up on boot hill - to the trail leading up into the Black Hills where most of the mining is being done.

End session.

Notices were posted around Gnometown today. It seems that mayor Wilbur Rugbottom was released from jail and has decided to step down from his position. He has appointed the sheriff, Rawley Clyborne as acting mayor until a formal election takes place 1 week from today.

Session II - Into the mines

The adventurers:

Aergraith as:

Sir Elderberry Scrubroot, the wildly bold and audacious gnome rogue
and
Iko Treeblight, gnome wizard whose magical power is ascending

Gringnr as:

Sir Gringnr, the mighty dwarf cleric with the love of GOLD

Penny as:

Dame Penny-Whistle Scrubroot, the practical and wise gnome cleric who now has the bloodlust up for evil monsters threatening her beautiful planet Jorde!

The action:

The group start up the Black Hills trail passing the occasional prospector and mule riding in the same direction. They arrive at the first abandoned mine and tie up their horses. Looking down at the entrance ground, they see some dusty tracks but cannot tell what manor of creatures made them. It seems that most folks wear boots in these parts.

Working with a crude map of the mine, the party enters into a large room with a corridor going south. They observe some rusted tools and mining carts used to transport metals along rails on the floor.
As they move to the southern passageway, they see three hobgoblins positioned to attack. A battle begins and the adventurers quickly kill the nasty creatures with their superior weaponry.

Gringnr uses a spell to speak to one of the dead hobgoblins who tells them that there have been many hobgoblins coming and going and maybe some children but he is not sure.

The heroes move south and then west where they see a smaller corridor that goes south. The clearly see the winch and trapdoor as they go, but ignore it for now.

The passage way continues a bit and then goes west again. They see a small fire that seems to be fed from a crack in the wall. They are able to get by it with no problem. Ahead they see a wood door and approach. It's not locked, so Elderberry checks for traps and does not find any.

Gringnr opens the door and several large rocks fall up him and he sustains minor damage. As they enter the hallway which contains a staircase going down, they are attacked by hobgoblins wielding crossbows. The group take some damage but advance to engage the hobs.

The hobgoblins are overpowered by the adventurers and killed. The see two gnomes shackled to the wall in the back corner. The party unlock the shackles and free the prisoners. They introduce themselves to the group - Nils and Greta Jonsson and they tell you that there were some children here, but other hobgoblins came and took them away.

The heroes lead the Jonssons out of the mine and return to one of the descending shafts. Elderberry climbs into the basket and Gringnr and Penny lower it by working the winch. The ratchet lock slips a few times, but they are able to lower Elderberry down where he looks for any openings or shafts. He sees none and they raise him up.

They try another vertical shaft and lower Elderberry down and the winch ratchet slips just enough to dunk the gnome rogue into ice cold water. Again he doesn't see any other shafts, so his granny and Gringnr raise him up.

The group decides to explore the west main shaft.

End session!

The Klaakagird Daily News has the following on the front page:

Lemuel Stetson struck a small copper lode up in the hills!

Gnometown has gained 29 new citizens, mostly prospectors but some trappers and hunters. A feed store and tanner have opened businesses this month.

Bilton Treelip, the owner of the general store was arrested for fear mongering and disloyalty to the mayor.

The Jonssons walked into town saying they were abducted by hobgoblins and were imprisoned in the old Brown zinc mine. Greta Jonsson says there were four children in the southeast locked room but were taken out before they were freed. Nils Jonsson told the Daily News that two of the gnomes that rescued them were quick and accurate on the draw with their guns!

Acting mayor, Rawley Clyborne has raised the wages of his office and those of the acting sheriff and deputies.

Mr & Mrs Lucius and Roweena Thistlegate have announced the birth of triplets today. Mother and babies are fine. But Lucius fainted and split his head open. He is now resting with the rest of the family at Doc Eustaces delivery room.

The following poster was nailed up at the post office and around town ~

Session III - In the mines and then out

The adventurers:

Penny as:

Dame Penny-Whistle Scrubroot, the practical and wise gnome cleric who now has the bloodlust up for evil monsters threatening her beautiful planet Jorde!

Gringnr as:

Sir Gringnr, the mighty dwarf cleric with the love of GOLD

As NPCs:

Sir Elderberry Scrubroot, the wildly bold and audacious gnome rogue
and
Iko Treeblight, gnome wizard whose magical power is ascending

The action:

The adventurers continue to explore the abandoned mine going to the northeast quadrant. They encounter a giant centipede who proves to be a fierce opponent, but in the end the heroes are able to kill the monster.

They head north and see two hobgoblins who attack. The group fight back and a third hobgoblin enters the fray, but again the adventurers prevail.

At this point a cave-in occurs and Elderberry just manages to keep from being buried. He does sustain some minor damage. The group then hears some shouts from some children that have just climbed out the northern shaft where the hobgoblins were. They seem happy to see the heroes and Penny gives them some candy treats and water.

The party along with the rescued children then make their way around the cave-in by heading northeast and then south and back west via the other mine corridor.

They get to a point and find some dead canaries and realize the oxygen is lacking. With a little trouble breathing, they move quickly back to the main corridor and are able to breath easy again. They exit the abandoned mine.

When they do so, the party is accosted by Deputy Brillo who asks them for their permits to enter the abandoned mines.

Penny tells him that they were on a rescue mission and shouldn't need any such permits. The deputy then notices the three children at her side. He changes his attitude suddenly and thanks the group for their efforts. He then offers to take charge of the children and return them to their parents.

Penny says that they will do this duty since the adventurers were the ones to do the rescue. The group delivers the children to the relief and joy of their parents.

They then go to the main saloon in town, Uncle Reds and plot their next moves.

Elderberry says he would try to become a deputy to see if he can learn more about what is going on in town.

He is successful at getting hired, but is sent off to a ranch away from the real action. He returns to the saloon and the party learns of The Big Swede mine. It was the first and most productive gold mine and was completely harvested of all the valuable ore.

The group decides that they will explore this mine next.

End session.

Session IV - Gunfight at the Big Swede Mine

The adventurers:

Aergraith as:

Sir Elderberry Scrubroot, the wildly bold and audacious gnome rogue
and
Iko Treeblight, gnome wizard whose magical power is ascending

Penny as:

Dame Penny-Whistle Scrubroot, the practical and wise gnome cleric who now has the bloodlust up for evil monsters threatening her beautiful planet Jorde!

Gringnr as:

Sir Gringnr, the mighty dwarf cleric with the love of GOLD

The action:

The adventures arrive at the Big Swede Mine and are met by Mayor Rawley, the Sheriff and two deputies.
They don't look happy and the Mayor tells them they can't enter this abandoned mine without a permit. He isn't his usual happy and gregarious self.

Penny-Whistle attempts to reason with Rawley, telling him that they are looking for the missing children.

After some terse and rude comments, he calls out the party and tells them to get outta town as he puts his right hand upon the butt of his gun in its holster!

The adventurers spread out a bit, and Elderberry tells him that they aren't going anywhere except into the mine . . . and he too puts his right hand on his gun, a Colt 45.

The mayor looks as though he didn't expect a challenge from the heroes and his lip twitches a bit and he is sweating profusely as he looks at Elderberry and then Iko.

"Go ahead Mayor, you can best him! Everyone in these parts knows yer the fastest gun in this territory! exclaims the sheriff, hoping to bolster the mayor's confidence.

Elderberry steps away from his party to move into a dueling position about 20 paces from Rawley.

The sheriff steps away from the mayor as well.

Each gnome takes their hand off their guns as they get ready for the gunfight.

Elderberry watches as Rawley begins his motion to pull his gun from his holster ~ but the gnome rogue was trained by Murlynd and is faster and draws and shoots first. The mayor is hit and takes a bullet in the shoulder.
This affects his effort to shoot and he drops his weapon.

The sheriff looks like he is ready to draw, but Iko uses mage hand to remove his gun from its holster and hold it up over his head.

Penny-Whistle and Gringnr keep an eye on the deputies just in case they make any move to attack. But, so far they haven't drawn their swords.

After some trash talk and careful maneuvering, the mayor gets a gun and again he duels with Elderberry who is able to shoot him again.

At this point, the sheriff and deputies attack - but all are defeated by the brave heroes as they blast away and/or use their weapons to great effect.

The adventurers are cheered by the many miners and prospectors who arrived to watch the gunfight.

All the children are returned to their parents and a large celebration is held in town at the fairgrounds.

End session.

End mini adventure.

Hey guys!

I'm not working Sunday afternoon which means I'll be attending my nephew's wedding. [If I had to work, I would have been able to run our game].

So, I will be back early Sunday evening ~ but may be too inebriated to run the game [unless there would be no liquor present, which has never happened in 31 years of family events].

Heh, I'm recalling nephew's baptism and luncheon some 30 years ago on Da Sout Side of Chicago. Twas a blessed time down der at da tavern at tirdy tird and tird!

Another, "so" - the game is not cancelled per se, but feel free to enjoy another activity on Sunday night. If it turns out that any of you are available to game, and I'm not too soused then I'll post and see if the game is on.

Aside . . SNOW is COMING! :D

Winter is coming as 'they' say. Stay warm and safe. It looks like everyone else is out this weekend so I think I am going to use the time to work on my little game. Looking forward to the next session though =)

Thanks, Penny. Yesterday was the crazy blizzard and so I was glad that the wedding was today or we wouldn't have made it.

So, today was bright and sunny if a little cold and a good day to travel in Indiana.

But now the temps have plummeted and it is DAGNABIT cold even for me!

Hopefully you guys down der are still enjoying the balmy Indian summer!
