Trying out alternative to SKYPE..

Post by Treebore »

My kids have been using it, I am DLing it now to try it out myself...

https://discordapp.com/

Edit: They like it because it uses up a lot less RAM/Data/etc... than SKYPE. They tell me it has been much more stable, etc...

My server name is Atyar (If you even need it), my user name is TreeboretheRubyLord
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

They don't have a Linux version, so I won't be able to use it. :(

They will "soon". In the mean time can your cell phone handle it?

To give you guys an idea on how much less of your resources this may use, SKYPE, not being used, just started up, was pulling 40 Kbytes. Discord, while connected to 7 different servers, one of which was actively being used for a call and chat between 3 of us, was only pulling 16 or 17. Less than half of what SKYPE, inactive, was pulling.

So, does it seems faster or more stable for you?

I've never had any issues with SKYPE, but I know that where you are, internet speed and efficiency are paramount!

Btw, have your kids checked out the voice chat in Roll20? Are do they not use Roll20?

I must say that I've been impressed with it, but as usual not so much with the desktop interface for gaming.

No, they use this program for their online computer gaming.

I would imagine it would, as it has almost the same specs as my desktop.

So, playing around on Discord, it looks like it supports browser launching. I'll have to try that later tonight.

Yeah, it opens in your browser, much like Roll 20 does.

We can also try out Roll 20's system. Its much better than it used to be. I jut haven't looked at how much resources it uses. Since it is also effectively browser based, I imagine it can't be much. At least in comparison to SKYPE, and it has been very reliable for the Friday group I play in.

Hmm, that sounds good ~ but I wonder, is this new? Perhaps there are tons less users compared to SKYPE.

It seems to be working on my browser. Just need to schedule a time to run a "live" test.

Of course you can run Skype from a browser too. It's probably the best way to do it in Linux since the Linux client hasn't been getting updates for a long time.

I did not know that either. Does it pull a lot less resources when ran that way? Thats my primary goal, to use something that eats up a lot less resources, for those of us that have crappy internet, or older/weaker computers.

BTW, I was talking to one of the kids about this last night, and I was mistaken about the 40 Kbytes I mentioned above, it was all on the Mega Bytes scale. So pretty substantial difference for gamers like me, on DSL, or worse, like Lord Seurek is on.
