Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
I own the "4th crusade" versions of the 3 core books (the ones with green covers). Are the new color versions offering anything other than more visual punch?
Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
If errata hasn't been bugging you with the 4th printings, then the answer is no. They addressed some of the more obscure errata, and still missed a few things, but the biggest difference is the color.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

if you have the cash, why not? Then you can loan out your old books or sell them cheap to new players???

Thinking of repalcing with newer editions? One word: flipbook.

I really like the new color editions of the books. Not enough written material was changed in the PHB to necessitate a new version IMO, but the new books just looks so cool. I do like the nifty new written bits in the M&T that discuss the "level" of objects producing variable results though - and the color is awesome.

I loathe the color. I like the errata fixes, so I use the 6th printing at my table, but I am sad when I do so. During play, I prefer the digest size versions of the PHB and M&T. In my dream world, I'd be using digest sized B&W with the 6th printing text. Or maybe a flip book version combining the PHB and M&T.

I have both the color 6th print and the flipbook. I use the flipbook at the table, but I love the colored books. It blows me away every time i open it just how nice it is.

Clearly, opinions differ. One option for the OP might be to get the 6th printing PHB in PDF and decide if he/she likes the color version before investing in a hard copy.

He wouldn't even have to buy a copy. He can, for an example, PM me and I can send him a link of my copy in Google Drive, and he can look at it and decide if he wants to buy. As long as he doesn't DL it or transfer it to his own G Drive, nothing illegal about that.Buttmonkey wrote:Clearly, opinions differ. Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
If you don't like color in PDF, can't you simply convert to a B&W version?
I would think the Trolls could offer at print full color and B&W versions when you order the books.. does not seem that hard an option to give...
Would you pay say $5 more for color or black and white to get what you want?

I would prefer a new black and white edition with regular paper and not the magazine type paper.
Or if necessary - black and white with the magazine paper.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
Fan of the color. Especially for M&T. I think it made alot of the monsters "pop".
I should note that 99% of the time I favor little to no art, b&w gaming books. I just think the color helps with the particular artists The Trolls utilize.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
Honestly, on top of the color, I think the pages are more sturdy, myself. Either way, I really like the color books.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
I'm fine with the newest color printing. I really was displeased with the 5th printing color, simply because the color combo made it hard for me to read the print in all but the brightest of lighting.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
I should clarify, mine are the latest color prints of the PHB and M&T.
Im unfamiliar with any previous color prints. My last set of books were the green cover b&w versions.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
The 5th print PHB had three issues which caused problems. The biggest issue was the parchment toning they used on the pages proved to be too dark, which made the text hard to read. The text itself was the same size as in the 4th print, but the color was changed to a reddish-brown which tended to blend in with the parchment. Finally, the paper wasn't glossy. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but with the text issues combined with the parchment toning, having glossy pages would have helped the text stand out more.

While loathe may be too strong a word I am not a fan of the color books. I never was a big fan of much of C&C's art anyway but the shift to color, glossy pages that is hard to make notes on and the subsequent price increase due to the changes isn't enough value for me to consider buying them at full price. I much more prefer my B&W, non-glossy copies over the color versions.Buttmonkey wrote:I loathe the color. I like the errata fixes, so I use the 6th printing at my table, but I am sad when I do so. Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
Wow, this thread is amazing to me. I thought I was the only person in the world who would prefer black words on white paper to full color. For me, mostly, it's that full color costs more and I'd rather buy more stuff at lower prices than less stuff at higher prices, even if the less stuff is prettier, and my eyes aren't getting any younger... every year my glasses prescription gets a little stronger, and reading the text on a color book becomes increasingly difficult.
I am unfamiliar with a "flip book." I guess that's my next thing to google.
Anyway, I found this thread surprising and enlightening. I hope the creators of the game are taking notes!

It's not just you, Ke...rmit. I think the artwork is much better in black and white. It seems "colorized" to me. I believe all of the interior art was drawn and intended to be printed in B&W. Color was added later when the 5th printing came out. Just ick.

If the Trolls ever do a Rules Cyclopedia style combined book, I'd like to see it as B&W with line and pencil art. My preference would be Ian Baggley (Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerors of Hyperborea), or something in the style of Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein" work. But I like a dark, realistic, grim style.

Re: Are the color books worth replacing my "old" editions?
I thought about making an off coloured joke here but that would be in poor taste. Oops.
I think the newest colour printings are fantastic but I do have a soft spot for the B/W books. I was happy with those and, honestly, I don't care for the expanded spell content that was introduced in the 4th print. The thing is, we're by large, already sold on the game. We all saw something there and picked up our C&C books, in some cases, years ago!
That said, given the looks of some of sleeker gaming books in recent years, it often didn't warrant a second look for many others which is a shame. Who knows what the size of the fanbase could have been if they had gone full colour a decade ago? When I ran something for FreeRPG Day last weekend, the look of the new books really drew some positive attention and this is a good thing. More people buying stuff means TLG stays in business a while longer after all.
All that being said, did they ever revise the flipbook after the latest printings (but keep in b/w)? I had a flip book, and parted with it a year or two back. I love the use and practicality of it though.
