Favorite magic items
So, I was talking with my girls the other night while we were polishing off their 'modern victory' characters and it took a turn to 'favorite magic items I've had over the years.
Most were the generic 'paladin with a holy avenger' things but some of the more memorable ones was:
Paladin with a holy sword that helped detect any exceptional evil (evil cleric mage - assuming they are doing human sacrifices and have sold their soul - vampires, devils etc) narrated as I felt an itch and tingle down my neck, and would force any demon to speak the truth - a temptress devil had pointed my paladin in the direction to get it (she had a ring that masked her from even the sword most of the time) and used me to kill off the other demons and a couple rival devils ... It stun when I found out my paladin had helped her strengthen her influence in the kingdom ...
But now adding to that
Lupa with Dardo, and his boots of striding & springing. A swashbuckler - with acrobatic type skills - with a magic sword and boots that enhance the jumping and movements into cool fighting positions. (Now if I can get something that helps my saves against fear and hold person)
So what are some of your all's more memorable favorite magic items

Re: Favorite magic items
The Holy Avenger! With my Girdle of Frost Giant Strength, my paladin defeated the demons of Orcus and any of the followers as well. The Hammer of Thunderbolts
When you're a cleric of Thor, you need to fight a few giants. There's only weapon to go with.
Rod of Flailing Each head of the flail was an attack. With a base of 2 attacks per round the paladin (see above), smashed many undead. Faster than they could advance with 4 d20 rolling each round, the paladin was unstoppable. Rod of Lordly Might - rarely was the +4 axe used. Generally it was for the James Bond uses of the item. I feel that I'm lucky as the DM that I played with gave out so many of the items and we enjoyed the game like we did.

Re: Favorite magic items
Crossbow of Accuracy and Cloak of Displacement combination for my Rogue (sniper survivalist) as a player.
As a DM - I'd say a toss up between a Wand of Wonder (Mk I-IV) or a Ring of (one) Wishes. Chaos...glorious twisted chaos (cue Dr. Evil laughter)

My Giant Slayer "Orus the Death Wand" may be my all time favorite, although I had a Ranger with a Sword of Sharpness back in the '80s.

Re: Favorite magic items
When I was in the Navy I got to play in some truly epic games with truly epic characters. Artifacts and Relics were given out, mainly, I think, because the GM/DM in question just wanted to see how much it would affect the game itself. Which it did, either to relatively minor effect, to totally ruining the campaign story the DM had pre planned and forced them to react to what was done. All in all one heck of a learning experience for me that serves me well to this day, and will continue to do so until I can't play anymore I feel very fortunate to have had DM's who tested the games to its supposed, limits, to see much more precisely just what those limits actually are. Which is why I will always say D&D is just a Supers RPG dressed up in Fantasy trappings.

Re: Favorite magic items
"Anything" item, like a wand, armor, or weapon. Makes it so you always have what you need/use.
Hat of Difference -- why not be able to have multiple classes without penalty?
Ioun stones -- virtually all of them are awesome, but I really like the ones that give you spell storage, a level, or regeneration.
And, of course, unique items from my game. Like ring mail of rings which allows the use of an additional magical ring (three total).

The Ring of Vampiric Generation. Portable Hole.
But I would also second the Holy Avenger and the Ioun Stones.

Rod of Lordly Might in the hands of a bard. And a Scimitar of Speed for my ranger.

Re: Favorite magic items
Nice, especially when you look at Roman NCO types. They had leather harnesses they would wear over their armor that would hold the various awards they had received . Their version of ribbons, awards and decorations in our modern military. It is an easy step from that to your idea ... consider it borrowed ! You know I don't think I have ever had an ioun stone ... It is interesting most of us (including me) don't have an item, it is a pair of them. Rigon, you should be proud, 2 of your players have their favorite weapons/items are from your game

This reminds me of the "Book of Lost Swords" with Sightblinder. From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_ ... s_of_Power

Re: Favorite magic items
That was a pretty decent set of books. I may have to dig them out and give them another read.

Re: Favorite magic items
My favorite was the First Book of Lost Swords when Mark's brother (?) picks up Town Saver and the sword goes berserk. Naturally, at the time I read it, I was bombarding my DM for it. He raised his eyebrow, looked over his glasses, and said "Do you really want such a CURSED weapon to have your paladin die in combat?" ::silence::

Re: Favorite magic items
My first character, an elven fighter-mage, eventually inherited a +6 vorpal flamberge that also flamed on command.
I had a cleric who received a Silver Mace of Demon Slaying from his deity. It is a +3 mace that has all the qualities of a mace of disruption, but also does double damage to all infernal creatures and triple damage to infernal royalty like demon lords and princes and dukes of Hell.
Then there's the everfull bag of mixed nuts that my gnome illusionist/thief acquired....the party never went hungry when he was around.

Re: Favorite magic items
I always thought Coinspinner was fun. Though Doomgiver is probably the more powerful of the lot. The story sort of lost its track after book five though and I lost interest in the series. Agreed that the 12 swords idea was very cool at the time and even did my own minor artifacts version of them way back when. Rise of the Shield Hero has some great weapon and shield ideas in it as well. Well worth the look if you like the Book of Swords series.

Re: Favorite magic items
The three that immediately came to mind.
Requiem - A +4 Defender that caused a funeral dirge to play when used. If used in full defensive mode, it block all normal missiles fired at the wielder, as if a Protection from Normal Missiles had been cast. My elven bladesinger had this long sword. It was awesome.
Earring of Disguise - Exactly the same as a Hat of Disguise but an earring instead. I had a bounty hunter with this.
The Soundtrack Sword - This one was silly. It was a +2 Long sword. When there were thematic moments in the game, the sword would have an appropriate sound track play in the minds of nearby characters. For example, we were standing in a circle discussing the answer to a particularly difficult riddle when we all heard the theme to Jeopardy start playing in our heads. The amusing part is that we didn't know this was coming from the sword. We thought some mischievous fae was messing with us at one point.

Re: Favorite magic items
1. Cloak of the Bat used by my AD&D magic-user back in the day.
2. Stealth Suit used by my AD&D thief back in the day. The suit masked body heat so that the thief was invisible to infravision and granted +5% to the Hide in Shadows and Move Silently abilities. The suit was a silk like cloth worn under the regular clothing.

Re: Favorite magic items
Ring of Negative Energy Protection. This very powerful ring prevents the the loss of levels (level drain) when suffering a successful attack from a creature or item that drains levels of experience.
I always hated level drain so much, but realize it is a vital part of the D&D/C&C game. This ring, even though I have only been lucky enough to have it once in all my years, was just so awesome. No more level drain for THIS guy!

Re: Favorite magic items
Ring of Improved Invisibility with a magical Sap that had a Greater Sleep on it. My rogue was very much against murder (those can be a life sentence you know!) and was an avid burglar, so being able to safely knock people out was a great advantage. Also had armor that was enchanted with Greater Invulnerability on it so that spells of 4 levels of lower wouldn't work on me unless I gave a command word.
