November Status Report

Post by jamesmishler »

Well, I'm back online (for now). Hopefully the computer holds together long enough for me to finish the now much-delayed first issue of Adventure Games Journal.

Once this issue (and the Campaign Installment) go to press, I'll be working on the Judges' Gazetteer of the Southern Reaches. After that, issue #2 and the second Player's Guide... the Player's Guide to the Roglaras.

When done, the first issue will have a total of more than 50,000 words (and that's in effectively only 43 pages, as there's the cover illo, back cover map, IFC and IBC ads, and the TOC/OGL page). Then the Campaign Installment will be closer to 60,000 words... so altogether ~110,000 words. That's one big baby to birth!

So fingers crossed the freaking computer holds together...

Excellent James, and thanks for the update. Hope the computer keeps on keepin' on. Be sure to back up ~ everything, everyday!!

Say, quick question. Someone on another thread said they received a great map with their order of XXXXI Tell Qa. Was that an oversight or something that we should all get?

Thanks,

Rhu.

That was the Southern Reaches map that will go out with subscriptions... his was the first XXXI order since I'd gotten the maps back from the printer, and so I sent him a copy as a freebie, being in a good mood (which was subsequently crushed by my computer crash on Saturday).

It is the only case of that map going out with XXXI; but you will get a copy of that map with the first issue of AGJ!

I think James is saving it for Christmas presents. He's even shipping them out in Christmas wrapping.

Let me simply say that my earlier claim to having a computer that was fixed was, in fact, quite erroneous. The damned thing freezes up no less than once per hour; it's a 50/50 chance whether the file I was working on ends up corrupted or not...

So this weekend I was out computer shopping. Looking things over, trying to decide what to buy, and how much I could get with the funds I have. I've already had to eliminate Macs, as I can get a computer and a full line of programs on a PC for the same cost. As this is going to be the "company computer," I have to buy Microsoft Office all over again (and not simply upgrade the Student/Teacher version I have now... want to be all legal about this, after all, as I'd have no right to complain about pirates if I pirate things myself!).

I should be getting the computer early this week (waiting for a loan to arrive), and then thing should progress properly...

I apologize for all the delays!

Just please say you're not going with Vista. Microsoft has allowed OEMs to start selling XP again, so, hopefully, you'll get an OS that doesn't sucketh. If you do get Vista, I'd suggest reformatting the drive and installing XP instead... that way you get good hardware and a somewhat decent OS.

Anyway, yeah, I've had nothing but bad with Vista... and gods do I hate the new Office layout. Everything is so different, for no reason except to make it different.

Here's to hoping all goes well.

No need to apologize James and I'm sorry to hear that you're having so many computer related issues.

If I may make a suggestion regarding an office suite: It may worth checking Open Office out. It's free... it's solid... and not hard to switch to if you're coming from MS Office. I used to use MS Office but switched when version 2.0 of Open Office was released. The money can thus be spent on other software applications that might be needed.

Nothing is for sale yet because the only thing available is XXXI (Tell Qa Gen Con edition).

Details for buying that are on the front page (scroll down)

Details on subscribing and buying the magazine and campaign are on the products page, here:
http://www.adventuregamespubs.com/products.htm

Once I actually have something more published, the Products page will have more details on how to order those...

James, have you considered Open Office?

I've never used it, but it looks like it's worth considering.

I recommend it as well. There can be formating issues if someone opens up an Open Office doc in Word but it's not usually a problem for me. It can be depending on your printer (I assume you send your stuff to a company to do the printing) needs. One thing I love about it is that you can save to pdf, you just can't edit pdf.

I imagine JAmes has to use what his printers use. If they aren't using openoffice then there is likely to be compatibility issues.

You can save in Word format if need be. I have had zero compatibility issues in the past couple of years.

Thats cool then. I would definitely recommend it then as well, JAmes. Its what I use. Its free, and works darn well. Plus it lets me use adobe PDF's fully. Redo layering and everything.

Damn, I'm dumb! I thought all those Xs were placeholders for a future product name.

hehehe ... it happens. To my understanding, it was called 'XXXI' (roman numeral 31) as to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the original release of Wilderlands at GenCon. Or something to that effect.

Regardless, it's a kick-ass product if you don't already have it. I got a copy and I'm thinking of ordering another one while there is still a chance. Once they are sold out... that's it!
