Re: Star Treck RPG
I love ST:A. It is a 2d20 system. I mostly use the top (main) layer of the mechanics but there are a lot of extra layers if you are a rules lawyer. Apologies if I have asked this elsewhere, but every time I see that someone is using a simplified version of 2d20 I ask for more information. I love th...

Re: Popularity of focused v generic game systems
Alien’s, from what I’ve read and seen (I admit I haven’t played it so don’t have 1st hand knowledge) it look amazing at capturing the look and feel of Alien(s) movies – 1,2,& 3 . But I don’t think it would be usable for anything else. I’m not sure if you could pull off playing a campaign in the set...

Re: Worst fantasy movie ...
The LOTR films had a sense of care and passion behind them - the Hobbit trilogy by comparison felt like a bloated cash-out. If LOTR had never existed, maybe the Hobbit would've gotten a better reception? Same could be said for the Star Wars prequels. . . I seriously dislike the Hobbit films. Just a...

Re: Worst fantasy movie ...
You know, I think my problem is that if a movie looks bad I don't even bother to try it. I guess in that sense I'm a "judge a book by its cover" kind of guy, and only the ones that make it through the cover test (or the preview test) even enter my brain as a movie for discussion. For example, my sis...

I met Rick a couple of times at Gen Con. I kept thinking that he was Ken St.Andre.
The few times I got to chat with him I found him to be a really nice and polite guy. He really was enthusiastic about his gaming. He will be missed.

Alternative to the SIEGE system
Over on DF is a thread where folks are discussing a way to replace SIEGE with something similar. I think that an awesome idea from that thread is simply to make use of the 5E "Advantage" mechanic, e.g. instead of having a 18/12 type difficulty roll you could keep all checks at 18 difficulty and then...

Re: Cthulhu, Poeish RPG
I haven't really read much Poe in decades so my memory on his stories may be faulty, but my thought is that a Poe game would probably emphasize story over number crunching so I would look for a rules set which allowed for fast play and imagination over some of those "a rule for every situation" type...

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?
Shadowrun 6E boxed set. As many have said, the setting is neat but the mechanics not so much. :( I tried to run a short session the other day and it flopped. My players never got comfortable with combat because the sequence just didn't make sense to them. Attack roll, followed by the defender gettin...

I keep telling myself that I need to get off my tushie and go to GaryCon again. The one I attended was a ton of fun. It always seems to happen at a tough time for me each year -- as a teacher we have lots of parent-teacher things and the like in March. Ugh.

Oh yeah ... 5e and the short/long rest ... I will willing benefit from it in game, but I don't like it. ALL HP back after 8 hours rest (and a good heal boost even from a short rest), some powers reset after an hour res, others after 8 hours rest ,,,, cab you get any more over powered ... If I did a...

Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion
I probably won't run 5e again, but I'd be willing to play it. That's the heart of the issue, isn't it? True old school games are earlier on the DM but provide fewer options for the player. New school games provide a lot more player options, at the expense of being harder to run. As a player, when y...

Re: Half-orcs: How often do have you seen them used as PCs?
I tried a half orc for a couple of sessions. Okay, but not anything really awesome. My sister played one pretty well. A couple of guys at the game store run one occasionally. Overall, not a lot of half orcs at my tables.

Re: TLG, the C&C game and these forums . . memories!
Sad to see the forums become a barren wasteland. I know that I don't stop by as often as I should, so I guess I'm part of the reason we don't get a lot of chatter in this place. As to the memories … this is the 3rd (?) TLG board that I've posted on. I know that I playtested C&C back in 2002 or 2003,...

Sounds like we have similar gaming styles. If you want some wacky adventure stuff, you might look at the Goodman Games products in the "Wicked Fantasy Factory" series. They are mostly 3E/d20 products (one is, I think, 4E) but I find that they have some neat ideas for ways to make a game a bit more w...

Well, there is a preview download. (Link in the 2nd post from the top.)
My group did some playtests, Jason is currently running a couple of playtest groups. There may be more of these that I'm not aware of in action as well.
My understanding is that the kickstart is to be launched "soon."

I'll also say this ... I buy many RPG products because they look interesting but I never play them. The new AA is the kind of product I plan to buy and then play. To be honest, the more I learn about 5e, the more I think I made the right choice picking C&C. I recognize that 5e is very popular and where the money is, and I know the trolls are running a business, but I have AA so I don't need another version using rules I don't like. I can't disclose too much because of the NDA in effect, but my understanding is that the 5E version of AA will be... (1) Essentially a stand-alone game. I guess the best thing that I see about it is that it helps show that the game is growing and isn't stagnant. I had a similar feeling about the CKG, where I appreciate it but hardly ever use it.

I like digest, but the price seems high. Is it the cost of printing in this form that drives that price? Have you seen the cost of Dr. Pepper lately. :) No, is it high? I buy Dr. Bob from Peapod and it's half the price! ;) Not to pick a nit, Rhu, but if you don't know the price of Dr Pepper, then h...

One could argue that for clerics healing is "their thing," but for druids nature is theirs. That could build a case that a druid might not heal as well as a cleric of the same level.

Re: GM Hidden or Open Dice [Old Topic]?
It's a tough balance. You want characters to survive, but you don't want players to think that you cheat to have them survive. Sometimes I roll behind the screen, other times in the open -- it all comes down to how lethal I want that particular game/campaign to be at the time.
