SIEGE Ability Checks as To-Hit rolls

Can Castles & Crusades be further streamlined by getting rid of the base attack bonus and making basic attack rolls a regular Ability check? A typical melee attack could be a Strength check, with the Challenge Level being the AC bonus of the target. If you are using by the book 12/18, this would...

Just less math and complication. The difficulty (12) is the same for everyone this way.

Non-Primes: d14 roll?

Has anyone considered the idea of having characters roll a d14 (I know they aren't standard, but I have a few) for non-Prime checks while keeping the base difficulty as 12 across the board for Prime (would still roll d20) and non-Prime checks.

Am I missing any unforeseen consequences with this idea?

Houserule - Prime Die (Thoughts?)

I know some people prefer the +6/18 method of using Primes, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried using a "Prime Die". How about instead of a flat +6, we add a d12 to the roll? I know this would effect the "swinginess" of attribute checks, but it would also give a slight bell-cur...
