Re: Missing 1st Ed Cleric Spells

There may be a class in the Adventurer's Backpack (Warrior Priest?) that does this already, but I think the DCC method of having clerics be able to channel power at will (albeit with a chance of failure) to heal is a nice feature. It also works differently depending upon the respective alignments of...

Re: What are you reading?

How is this version of Blackmoor? What system is it written for, if any?

I liked the DA module series, again because I thought the lore was pretty cool. Only "Temple of the Frog" was really good as an adventure.

Re: Zero Magic C&C

The old TSR Conan modules were low magic and had pretty bare bones guidelines for playing that way. And having converted some of the Modiphius stuff to AS&SH, I don't think it would be hard to convert that to C&C if you wanted a setting that was inherently on the low magic side. Most of their spells...

Re: New Group (pronounced "OLD") via Internet.. start up advice???

I'd vote for Zoom. Far less hassle than all those crappy VTT things. You can just share screen for dice rolls and you can have a gallery where you see everyone. But I'm low-tech. And to be honest, I haven't actually played on a VTT; just seen some of the videos on youtube, which make them seem prett...

Re: How do you handle multi-classing?

Just use the rules in the PHB, but only demi-humans can multi-class. Helps set them apart and is a nod to the fact that I enforce class restrictions for demi-humans.

Re: So what world setting do you typically run C&C in?

I use my own campaign setting of Krysonia, which has been cobbled together since the late 1980s. Last fall I hired Glynn Seal from Monkeyblood Design to make nicer versions of my old hand-drawn maps, which you can see here: https://monkeyblooddesign.co.uk/2020/10/25/krysonia-leng-commission/ As you ...

Re: Do you prefer colour or black and white rpg books?

I'll continue the grognardian preference for B&W with color covers, though I also like how some newer games like AS&SH use a few color plates in addition to the primarily black & white art.

Re: Screw it...

Always fun to mess with transposing adventures to other settings. I generally set everything in my own world, but I've dropped tons of published adventures in there so I have to keep updating my campaign notebooks to reflect all the places I've added. So you'll find references to Greyhawk, FR, Middl...

Re: Castle Keeper's Guide

Another thing that just occurred to me concerning the new printing of the CKG. Have they finally added a Harlot table? Of all the egregious omissions, that has to be the worst. The AD&D 1e DMG has one, along with Gary's awesome clarifications of the different kinds of harlots. The Siege Engine needs...

Thanks; I had seen the CKG KS, but not the other one. So now it looks like I'll be forking over for the Adventurer's Spellbook and the new Castle Keeper's Guide for sure. Not sure about the PHB at this point as I'll likely be picking up the alternate cover of the 7th printing.

Re: What are you reading?

Nice; I've tried reading a bunch of the Appendix N fiction the past year that I hadn't read before, but I must admit that I haven't been crazy about much of it. Recently read the first five John Carter novels and found them to be basically Vin Diesel movies in print. Lots of crazy action and set ups...

Re: Castle Keeper's Guide

Thanks; so basically it's still a few months away? And having been away myself for awhile, what's the deal with the 8th printing of the PHB? Any difference in content? Or just some layout & editing changes? I ask because I'm about to buy the 7th printing to replace the 6th printing I sold a couple y...

Re: How many players do you like to have in your gaming group?

I think 3-4 is good, but usually some of them are running multiple characters since I think optimal party size is 6-8. In the pandemic, it's usually been 2 players, running 3 PCs each. But that's much easier to do in games like OSE, C&C, or S&W, since you don't have all the skills, feats, etc. Once ...

Re: What are you reading?

Tons of stuff for work, as I'm a historian. But for fun, currently reading War of the Jewels by Tolkien, part of The History of Middle Earth series published by his son. Once I finish this, I will finally have read the whole damn series. Interesting on some levels, but kind of a slog on others. Defi...

World Building & Rules Tweaks

Returning to C&C after a couple year hiatus playing other OSR games & thought I'd share a few observations. The shift back to C&C was inspired by my desire to rework my campaign gazetteer to incorporate events and ideas I've accumulated over the past five days. When I initially did this version of t...

Re: Castle Keeper's Guide

;) Yeah; I have to admit that I smiled when I saw that the original delivery date was last September. Obviously the pandemic may have something to do with it, but some things never change. I think both kickstarters I backed from Troll Lords were more than a year late in physical fulfillment. But wit...

Re: Castle Keeper's Guide

Interesting. I had walked away from C&C a couple years ago to play other OSR games but recently found my old C&C campaign notes and started thinking about diving back in as a couple other campaigns are winding down. Funnily enough, when I was searching for something else on the Internet a few days a...

So you're bailing on the system altogether? What did your group decide to switch to? We switched to a mashup of Astonishing Swordsman & Sorcerors of Hyperborea and Labyrinth Lord, since they've finally come out with a combined book for that. So far, so good. The AS&SH party is all at 4th level and ...

Frankly, it seems like the Troll Lords jumped the shark on this one. I'll sell my hardcover for $10 plus shipping to anyone who wants it. In fact, our group has decided to move on from C&C so I'm thinking about selling pretty much my whole C&C collection for $10 per hardcover & $5 for the modules. S...

Elemental Spells

Been playing a fair amount this summer and I must say we are enjoying the spells in the Elemental Spells supplement by James Ward and Jason Vey. Really good for druids and clerics with an elemental bent in particular. Our group has a dwarf cleric and he loves the earth related options. And it's nice...

I think that inspiration can come from a lot of places, however. The tough thing is when you are inspired by something that your players haven't read. When I ran a Lankhmar adventure for my wife and kids they didn't get it. They hadn't read the books and apparently I wasn't really able to convey th...

Eclectic Inspirations

In doing a bit of writing of my own material lately I've been struck again by the eclectic mix of original D&D. A lot of people talk about the pulp influence on Gygax and friends, but there's really just so much in there. And I've come to realize that I have pretty broad tastes too. Sometimes I want...

[quote="Treebore"]I don't think anything can be called "intuitive". 1st Edition D&D was never anything I would call intuitive. It required a lot of memorization. Once everything was in my head, I may have described it as intuitive. I don't recall. C&C certainly wasn't intuitive for me until I had my...

I backed it for a couple reasons. First, I don't own any of the books already so I'm getting all new stuff. Second, some of those I sometimes play with still don't really care for the Siege Engine or want to play C&C. They prefer straight D&D or some very near derivative. In some ways I agree in the...

Re: Seeking help with the old modules original content

In answer to your question, all PCs were basically made using C&C rules with one exception, a halfling sawshbuckler taken from Hackmaster 4th edition. But all his equipment was culled from C&C rulebooks. I didn't worry about minor differences in armor, weapons, etc., that might have emerged in the A...
