Re: Gods & Legends

I liked the original deities and demigods of the old ADD days. each cultural history noted, a few fictional ones (Elric and The grey Mouser), plus the head of each Non-Human race. Then the old Dragon magazines added all the non-human pantheons. Yes, since stats for Gods are not really needed I use ...

Re: Why the secondary skills make checks without level?

A simple and equitable way to add a "level" to a secondary skill would be with an XP buy. 20% of the XP of your current level to the next. I will explain. The PC is a 3rd level Illusionist. IF you want to go from 1 skill point in Blacksmith to two points you pay 20% of what is needed to go...

Re: Why the secondary skills make checks without level?

If the usual ability check must add the character level to the dice roll, why the CKG says that for the secondary skills this should be avoided? The rational was taken from AD&D. A secondary skill is background for the PC. Something they started learning before starting a full time pursuit as s...

Re: Minor/Major Dark Chaos Spell

This spell creates two tendrils from the Illusionist hands. These tendrils attack and, saving throws permitting, do automatic damage. In your opinion these attacks take an action? Or while the tendrils attack the Illusionist can make something else? I think that an action should be spent to "p...

Re: Spell Resistence Fix

The problem was briging monsters over from other d20 sources to have a way to set CR appropriate for level. The monster and Treasures book pretty much has nothing to go on. My goal was to be able to convert something from another system instead of just guessing a number. Why guess? Most systems I'v...

That is about the worst rule I have seen in a long time. I run towards you with a knife, trip and fall on my face and you take damage. Lol. Well you'd have to have the mindset of competent combatants that aren't actually "missing a swing", No, competent combatants DO miss during fi...

Re: Rules that not in C&C. Could they be part of it?

So if you're attacking with a sword and facing a foe with AC 12 or less, at a minimum, you will do at least 2 damage, even if you miss! A mace does at least 1 damage to foes with AC 18 or less. That is about the worst rule I have seen in a long time. I run towards you with a knife, trip and fall on...

But what he is saying is that his players are interested in dealing with this sort of issue and he wants ideas on how to keep it interesting but simple. Just handwaving the idea and charging a % cost doesn't really solve the issue he is having.

Re: About new players, the CKG wastage rules and other considerations - long post

Just assess a certain amount of coin for clothing for when adventuring. And a certain amount for equipment wastage and maintenance when adventuring. Probably of % of the total cost of the equipment and clothing. Anything more detailed than that is boring unless they are in teh wilds for a LONG time ...

Ok thanks, it seems fun :) Rules for finding plants remember me about the old Wilderness Survival Guide, 1st Ed. Good book that one. If you have the original AD&D DMG pages 220 - 221 contains a fairly exhaustive list of herbs, spices and vegetables along with their possible uses and/or powers.

Re: Unarmed Combat - PHB or ABP?

Apologies! ABP = Adventurer's Backpack. Additional Abbreviations reference: PHB - Player's Handbook; CKG - Castle Keeper's Guide. My thoughts are; I don't think most CKs use the unarmed combat rules in the PHB as written. At least the dozen or so I've spoken with over the years. I am not familiar w...

Re: Spell Resistence Fix

I thought C&C SR was immuntable.. The target number is the target regardless of levels. Right, I wasn't talking about the sliding scale up and down but 5% increments from 0% to 100% SR. Early on we got rid of that due complexity and switched to what C&C came up with decades later? Makes it ...

Re: "D&D" Castle/Fortress Guide books

I would argue that the historic type defenses would be useful. I never said they wouldn't useful. Indeed they would be as useful against mundane forces as they were in our world. They just would not be useful enough in a fantasy world like D&D and THUS, would have been altered to better resist ...

Fantasy by its nature is not going to be historically accurate Correct but that isn't the point of this post. Fantasy is fantasy not history. Obviously. Re: Rules that not in C&C. Could they be part of it?

Somewhere I red that the SIEGE system starts to "break" around the 10th level. But that is true for any d20 based system. And it was perhaps true even for the original D&D/AD&D system. No, it actually remains viable far better than AD&D did at higher levels. Just look at PC sa...

"D&D" Castle/Fortress Guide books

Since the first one of these I read from 1st ed AD&D, Titled "Castles" I think, it has been done wrong. Castles and fortresses have been presented as they actually existed in medieval times. This is NOT what would exist in a D&D type world. They would have evolved not only to prote...
