Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

You're definitely thinking of Archon. The book version of "The Queen's Gambit" is very good, but the TV show is better in every way except the chess. The book nails the chess stuff, especially the final game. The TV show had to make some compromises with the chess to make it watchable for ...

Re: A Most Epic Boss Fight

Sounds like a great adventure. And the werebear idea is interesting. The monster description in M&T looks workable for a PC afflicted with lycanthropy. The write up says in bear form the character will lose some of its human mentality and will have difficulty distinguishing friend from foe. You ...

A prime attribute character should roll an 11 to make a CL 15 check I think.
That would mean a CL 15 check in 3E would have a challenge level of 0 in C&C. I've never played 3E, so I don't know if that makes sense.

Re: What gaming stuff are you reading?

I'm deep diving back into chess (again!). This time I hired a coach to try to see faster improvement and to hold me accountable to make progress. I can't how many times I have started reading a chess book and never picked the book up a second time. I've probably read the first 5-10 pages of a hundre...

Re: Good modules for a convention one shot?

I've enjoyed running White Plume Mountain as a con event. There's no way to complete the full module in 4 hours, but you could easily streamline things by eliminating some of the less interesting encounters and only having the party try to recover 1 or 2 artifacts during the play session. The C&...

That was pretty cool. Some of the close-ups were uncomfortably close to the point it became uncomfortable. I found myself pulling back from my monitor hoping to get a better view.

Re: On dungeon mapping

I haven't been able to play much face to face over the last few years, but I have definitely drifted away from detailed mapping like I grew up with in the 1E days. I have always found mapping to be a pain in the ass and the antithesis of fun. As noted by someone above, I would rather spend my limite...

I myself had a blast when I set up my dining room table and went full out with hundreds of mini, props, castles, dragon and pretty much everything I could find to set up a giant mass combat. It was me against myself and it was a blast. Took a week or so to resolve most combats. Not sure if I actual...

Re: Playing or Designing?

That is a tough question. I theoretically would enjoy playing the best, but I find it isn't as stimulating as GMing. I get bored quickly when the spotlight is on someone else. I really enjoy the immersion of GMing -- you're always "on." But GMing is also stressful and lacks the pure fun of...

I've sold 7 copies, so I'm kind of a big deal now. ;-) I'm thrilled people have been enjoying it. I enjoyed designing it, running it, and publishing it, but readin...

The 7 HD dwarves in the 1E were a scanning error. The computer mistook "1" for "7". I believe there were other similar scanning errors in the reprints.

I released my first C&C module on DriveThruRPG this week. Priced at $1.00, I should be able to retire any day now. The entire module is visible in the free preview, so you can check it out before deciding whether it's worth your copper pieces. Please check it out!

Re: The C&C rule(s) you dislike or ignore...

For group initiative, we roll and, when it is the PCs' turn, I pick a player to go first and then either go clockwise or counter-clockwise. I don't always reroll initiative each round. I may go back and forth for 2 or 3 cycles before rerolling. Sometimes we reroll every round.

It depends on the game. If I'm running C&C, I would prefer 5-6 players. If I'm running Dungeon World, 3-4 player is ideal.

Black and white. Gideon Thorne's (i.e., Peter Bradley's) artwork looks better in B&W.

My own homebrew setting. I have stolen bits and pieces from Airdhe, but my campaigns generally revolve around the lands surrounding the Free City of Rotter.

Re: The C&C rule(s) you dislike or ignore...

Things I threw overboard: 1. Alignment. My house rules say your PC can't be evil and must be conceived to work well in a party environment (i.e., no obnoxious chaotics). 2. Encumbrance (not worth the hassle). 3. Barbarians (they suck and are better served as a role play option for other classes). 4....
