Re: C&C Conan complete

Six months too late, but I saw this got necro'd again. I don't do C&C anymore, been pretty busy with B/X D&D, after a multi year stint with 5e. I'm amazed and honored that this little conversion is still popular after 10 years!!! The mediafire links are gone, I'm not hosting the documents it anymore...

Re: Alcohol and gaming

It is all about moderation and tolerance. At our games (5 hours every two weeks) I always have 2 beers (with a Coca-Cola spacer in between). Of the other 5 players, one will have a single whiskey/coke, while two others will occasionally have a beer each. It is no big deal, but then we are not trying...

"Troogo" an AD&D Magic-User. Played him daily at Middle-school for 3 years, and on weekends. Got him up to level 20+, but it was a pre-teen/early teen Monty Haul game.

Go the Full Monte: Barbarians can heal (Primal Fury): "GET UP YOU SCUM BAG, GET BACK IN THE FIGHT!!!" (+1d8 hp) Thieves can heal. Back Attack becomes Back Rub, a therapeutic massage that gains a +4 to Constitution saves to gain 1d8 hp. Bards can heal. Exalt becomes Excedrin, and cures 1d8 hit points.

Re: What's your favourite printing of the C&C Players Handbo

3rd printing all the way. As you know Slimy, I've run a game purposefully with only the 3rd printing in mind and it was awesome. I like the layout, the thinness of the book, the original barbarian, the lack of the added illusionist spells, as well as a few other things that escape me at the moment....

Re: The Force Awakens... spoilers, rants, and accolades

I saw Ep VII twice since last week. It both rehashes and reconstructs Star Wars (Ep. IV). The plots are both VERY similar (youth stuck on a desert planet, with a hidden past; Droid with secret, vital information; Big Bad Planet Killing Base; Cantina scene; Trench run). It takes the three main charac...

Re: Changes you would make to C&C

1. Ditch primes completely. Challenges would be d20+Ability mod +level only. 2. Go to a straight DC15,20,25 for static challenges, and DC15+HD/Lvl for spells, effects, etc. 3. Install level limits for demi-humans (a la AD&D) to compensate for no primes. 4. Max level is 12th. Spells above 6th level a...

Here is the newest link to C&C Conan v2. https://www.mediafire.com/folder/8z6kl81e4z9nl/C%26C_Conan_v2 I also made a v3, which dropped primes and instead each races 'favored class' allowed a full (12-level) progression, 'prohibited classes at 1st level' were topped out at 6th level, and all other cl...

Re: A realistic (to a point) Renaissance church hierarchy ?

This is how I handled it in my Greyhawk campaign, but works well for what you seem to want: Clerics are special. They are the 'Joan of Arcs' of the world. Divinely inspired and directed to smite evil. They have access to divine powers that most of the church doesn't. This can allow you to play off f...

Yeah, for full disclosure, I also don't track xp anymore. I generally have characters level every other session for levels 1-4, and every third session for 5-8, and every fourth session for 9-12 (I top out my games at 12th).

Re: Measly shields...

Long ago I house ruled that bucklers give +1, round (Viking) shields give +2, kite (knight) shields give +3 and tower shields give +4 to AC. also give that bonus to all attacks from the front or front-ish.

Since I run lower magic games, it worked fine.

Our group has two primary go-to GM's. Me and The Other. We each tend to last 6-8 months GMing, then we get burn out and switch so the other one can play. We also switch up games. We played 3-4 months of C&C (actually my AD&D3e home brew), and then my Real Life (tm) got in the way. So The Other took ...

Reynald the Lionheart. Human Paladin. First paladin I ever played. I modeled him after a Knight Templar: Feed the poor, tend to the sick, promote the faith, build chapels, and mercilessly kill infidels. It was in a friend's home brew Thunderdelve campaign. I had a lot of fun, because 'lawful good' d...

We play one session every 2 weeks (every other Saturday). We play for about 5 hours a session (but that includes eating and the 'what have you been up to' pleasantries). Maybe 4 actual hours of game time. We tend to level once every 3 sessions. So, assume 1 level for every 12-15 hours of play. I'm p...

Our table uses 3rd printing, which is essentially the same as 1st & 2nd printing, just cleaned up. We have no plans on changing. We don't care for the illusionist healing spells or the revised barbarian.

Re: Do you fudge die rolls? Creature Stats? On the fly?

I rarely fudge rolls. When I do fudge things, it usually revolves around fudging hp's for adversaries. I've upped hp's a few times during fights with Big Bads or Big Bad's Lieutenants, when the party is tearing through them too fast and too easy. I've turned a 5HD Ogre chieftain in to a 6HD Ogre chi...

We call him the DM (rarely the GM). We also call anything that is remotely sword & sorcery D&D (although we only really play our house ruled C&C, called AD&D 3e). Heck, right now we are playing Edge of the Empire, and we still ask, "are we playing D&D this weekend?" D&D in the general context being ...

Yup. I've house ruled a few things:
-level limits for demi-humans (instead of primes)
-DC15 checks instead of SIEGE checks
-simplified encumbrance

Other than that, we run it as AD&D 3rd Edition.

Exactly!!

Unless it is important to the story, or a significant chance of failure, I don't require a roll. Either it is do-able, or not.

Now, under stress, combat, etc., rolls are required.

Regarding class skills and primes, I've always handled them this way: (not exactly RAW, but in the spirit of RAW) A standard attribute check is d20+attribute modifier, against a challenge base of 12 (prime) or 18 (non-prime). Characters are allowed to add their level bonus to the check only if it is...

I've adjusted the rules so that small shields (bucklers) give a +1 AC to all opponents. Medium shields (kite shields, Viking round shields, etc) give a +2 AC to all opponents. Large shields (pavis, knight's full shield, etc) give a +3 bonus to each opponent. That gives the players real choices: 2H w...
