Re: The error that changed the face of Dungeons & Dragons...
I think Slimy is on to something, reading my copy of Basic Set Dungeons & Dragons (Holmes edit, 1977) it states: CLERICAL SPELLS Clerics of the first level can not cast any spells. When they reach the second level, however, they are capable of one spell per game/day. Since clerical spells are divine...

So it would appear that the latest printing has it wrong then.

Re: The Rogue and the Mace
If it just says "mace" that would be any mace. In the PHB the light mace is 3 lbs. and the large & heavy mace are 4 lbs. Well, if every mace could be included, I think it would have been more appropiate the term "maces". The single term seems to imply that only one kind of mace can be used properly...

Re: Aihrde is finally becoming real to me...
Old school C&C was great, it was a lot of fun, and we played by the book using only the 1st-3rd printings of the PHB. I think it's high time I started up another one of these campaigns.

Re: Defender AC for grappling
I only use the 1st-3rd printing PHBs when running C&C, and I use the rule as it is presented in those printings: "The armor class of a defender in an overbearing attack is different than normal. A standard armor class of 15 is used for all defenders, as armor has little effect on the capacity to def...

Creating high level characters
Need some high level characters for a module but nobody in your group has high level characters? Try The Crusader #8, inside there's an article by Mike Stewart titled Expertise on the Fly: Creating High Level Characters on the spur of the moment. The article is quite useful, it gives the CK a simple...

Re: Adventurer's Backpack...
I've found the new Druid spell Open Sinkhole (1st lvl) a real challenge. It opens up a sinkhole 10-20 feet deep and 20ft +5' per level. It can be cast under foes so they drop into the hole and take falling damage, plus are now trapped at the bottom of essentially a large pit trap. My players have u...

Arcane thief, Archer, Divine Knight, Ethereal Knight, Foresworn, Magic User, Oathsworn, Pacer, Primal Druid, Rune Mark, Seeker, Skald, Thief, Warrior Priest. I don't think any of these make the PHB classes obsolete. I haven't dug deep into the spells, but from a quick glance they aren't world shaki...

Re: The 'filler' Illusionist Spells...why are they there
Hey gang, I think my point is there seem to be spells in certain levels iust because TLG wanted to get a certain number of spells listed. If they just listed 12 spells per level for 1-5 and say 10 spells per level for 6-9, we’d have a lot less filler spells like “Doubled Treasure” that no one is go...

Re: Assisted attribute checks
That makes sense. I think it might be possible for 4 people to grapple one character, but more likely I would use the overbearing rules in that case. Yes, that would seem to have to be the activity it would devolve into based on the size of the combatants. It's what I tend to have opponents do when...

Re: Is there some advantage attacking in your underwear?
If the CK takes into account encumbrance of armor, then you would have an advantage in speed. Being able to outrun opponents can be a benefit, even if it's to run away, or hit and run tactics. You'll generally be safe from Heat Metal spells. If you're travelling in a hot climate you will be much les...

Re: Assisted attribute checks
I would typaclly allow the relavent attribute bonuses to stack. I also usually have the character with Prime roll. Gives the PCs a better chance to succeed. R- How would you handle something like 4 hobgoblins trying to grapple a human at the same time? What would the hobgoblins get as a bonus?

Re: Question on Barkskin
Barkskin... too powerful.... touch vs self... I see a druid doing it only to self... and little need to do it to the fighter or cleric since it does not stack with armor (I think)... so you barkskin up the mage or a thief.. big deal... let it be either... or self at start and with a WIS check they ...

I was thinking about how I want to rule multiple grappling opponents on a single figure.

Grandpa, I don't think anyone was suggesting adding levels to bonuses, but adding levels to abilities, like moving silently, hearing, etc. Not bonuses to saves or attack rolls.
