Quote: True. But its usually the fellows who have the largest grants, ie the historans who are the most 'known', who have the most to lose either financially or reputation wise when someone comes along with a theory which overturns convention. Again, this does not represent the historical professio...

<t>About Holy Blood, Holy Grail. This book is utter fantasy. There is a difference between arguing from evidence and insinuations. HBHG does the latter.<br/> <br/> As a professional historian (that is, an academic one), I can state that 99% of historians do not get 'big grants', let alone 'grants' o...

<t>ah, Peter, but you're talking about political manipulation. That's not what I'm getting at ... I'm talking about popular entertainment. It is "only" entertainment, but as you know perfectly well, sometimes the only history people get is through popular entertainment. So, since there is no cui bon...

<t>I'm with you Catweazle. I find the glorification of Sparta to be an interesting phenomenon of the present, especially in the US. While it is true that an early democracy grew up in Greece (in certain areas), Sparta was not a major contributor to that (except maybe as part of an agon). Remember, S...

I'm not certain of the difference between style and substance, but I voted for 'style'. For me, C&C evokes the old 1st edition style, albeit with improved mechanics.

I'll chime in with a question ... anyone know anything about Burning Wheel? I saw a bit about it elsewhere, and it sounds interesting. But I'd like to hear from some of the regulars before I open the wallet.

anyone? anyone?

I'm looking forward to all Tree's listed items and a few more, to boot. Namely the revival of JG:

First up, Thieves of Badabaskor - due any week now, AFAIK.

Hopefully James Mishler's stuff will start appearing, too.
