<t>I wouldn't tie the secondary skill to the PC's level unless the secondary skill was directly related to the PC's class (e.g. a ranger with Hunter/fisher). For example, if the PC's secondary skill is Tailor/weaver, then advancing as a Cleric wouldn't improve his skill as a tailor, IMO. If the seco...

<t>There are no hard-and-fast rules for "advancing" a monster. Just start with the base creature and add the HD or abilities that you want (e.g. I think Monsters & Treasure mentions giving a gnoll the spells of a 4th level wizard). Personally, I much prefer this approach over defined rules for a...

<t>In general, I'd go with the rules-as-written for this. My thinking is that whenever you make an attack roll, it means you have committed to that enemy. It's not just a single swing, it's a series of moves, attacks, feints, etc. that go on throughout the round. Movement before the attack can still...

Magic Item Creation Question

<t>In Monsters & Treasure, there is a chart on pg 89 that lists formulas for calculating the base cost of creating various magic items. However, the costs that the formulas produce don't match the prices listed in the various magic item tables.<br/> <br/> For example, a wand of magic missles (1s...

I like the approach the 1E DMG uses. It's based on character age, so it models the concept of changing stats over time, but the modifications are fairly minor and don't happen very often (there are only five age categories).
