5e backgrounds for C&C

My apologies if this is been already addressed or talked about in another form topic.

Has there is been any discussion about converting the 5e backgrounds to C&C? I think it's a fantastic section of the new PHB and I think they would work quite well in C&C.

Re: Advantages with penalties

Well, maybe I'm crazy. It wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of such things! I'll take a second and apologize to Arduin - I don't have any documentation other than a conversation/discussion I seem to remember. I'm sorry if I was a little snarky in my previous post, but people who jump onto...

Re: Advantages with penalties

Right. But they didn't take it from Traveller. How do you know that the designers didn't get their idea from Trav? I used it in my Arduin game in '80 after taking it from Trav. Also The C&C individual attr save uses all six attributes. 3.x doesn't thus, C&C doesn't use its saving throw syst...

Re: Advantages with penalties

Just a small nitpick - a saving throw system based off of attribute/ability score modifiers (modifiers modeled - not exactly ported over, but modeled - from d20) is a d20 concept. There is precedence in AD&D. For instance, your Dexterity based Defensive Adjustment applies to certain saving thro...

Re: Dispel Magic

When I break it down by bullet point, it's not so bad. * The spell suppresses magic items, counters another's spell, and ends spell effects w/i a 30' x 30' x 30' area. * You must make an intelligence check for each effect to dispel in said area in order to dispel/suppress/counter it (this is the &qu...

Re: Advantages with penalties

I have to agree with Rock on this part of the conversation. While a lot of the feel/ambiance is AD&D in nature, I feel that the mechanics are more akin to d20 than they are to 1st Edition. The main things that 3.x newly introduced were NOT used in C&C...Saving throw system... Just a small ni...

That's a helluva deal, Tree. I was never big on Grimtooth. Don't really know why. They're amusing, and many are ingenious, but they never did anything for me. Sold off my first two volumes years ago, but picked up The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps at a hole in the wall game store a couple of years ago ...

Re: Character Death, Old School vs. New School

Does the DM/GM/CK/etc need to work to kill off the PCs to craft a good story? I can't think of a good story that HASN'T had death being a very real possibility. I agree with this. Death has always been a looming possibility in my games, and usually the players know it. More often that not, death oc...

Re: Advantages with penalties

Yes, the PHB (D&D) only would be more "balanced" as they were baked in. C&C really isn't designed to handle "feats". It doesn't work well overall while using the Siege Engine. I really think that the Trolls tossed them into the CKG purely as a sop to 3.X kids. Absolutely...

Re: Character Death, Old School vs. New School

Now if I were to lose a character, and not have the option of getting him/her raised, then I would be upset with the DM, because if they weren't going to allow spells in the book, they should have said so from the beginning. At very low levels, per the book, it is unlikely that the group would be a...

Re: Advantages with penalties

Is it the gun or the person who pulls the trigger at fault? I look at this particular issue like that. Naw. It's not like that. It is simply power creep & escalation. They DO give more power. That is their purpose. PC's get more power to use, encounters have to get rebalanced (unless one runs a...

Re: Character Death, Old School vs. New School

Character death, if not necessary warranted, is often avoided. And this is not a new-school mentality - I've heard stories of this back in the 80s, around the time I first started playing D&D. Yes, I remember when that was creeping in. About 10 years after D&D started there were DM's who wa...

Re: Character Death, Old School vs. New School

The player is definitely a new-school player, and this got me wondering, is character death truly an old-school thing now? No. Character death is an adult thing. (N.B. age ≠ to being an adult). One PC died and players are upset? Solution: Play with adults. I sometimes run games for teens. There is ...

Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion

This has always been one of my sticking points. Depending on which side you view it from, there's an issue. I am in the camp of "HPs are an abstraction and represents a number of different things, not just health," but in doing so you have to make certain concessions, I feel. I'm on the fe...

Re: Advantages with penalties

Yes. This and much more of the CKG, as I get deeper into it's use, make less and less sense to me. You must be careful using CKG advantages as written. They could be game breakers. Same thing happened with Feat chains in 3.x. Which is why all such nonsense doesn't enter my play. I concentrate on ge...

I've been getting that way with pretty much everyone over the last couple of years. Tired of buying heavily errated or even "Revised" rule books, especially for RPG's my whole family plays, such as C&C. So, as one example, I will not buy another printing of a C&C PHB or M&T un...

Looks pretty good, sir! The only other tweak I'd consider is another -1 on Charisma for the hobgoblin. Other than that, they look pretty good! And they're not terrible w/o it, just a suggestion. :) LD, that would give them a net -2 to attributes, right now they have a net -1. So, I think I'll stick...

Re: New playable races for a Kalamar campaign

Why would resistance to poisons exist for the half race but not the full one? That would be my question. Otherwise, they look good to me. A bit on the powerful side, in my opinion. I might would given them a few more negatives on the attributes to balance it out, but that's me. Overall, I think they...

Re: Availability in the UK

Welcome to the Crusade, Vesavius! It could possibly be because of the new printing. Many distributors and/or retailers may be waiting for a restock of 6th printing books. I don't know how that end is going, though. I know a local chain store (Books-A-Million) has a 6th printing on their shelf, which...

Of course there are two different "rules" to cover two different situations. Or one rule with a couple of exceptions. Six in one, half a dozen in the other... :) But that discounts and possibility of a baker's dozen. Surely there's room to accept a third exception. There's always room for...

I just played a game of Risk last night in I don't know how long. Had a pretty good time, too. We gave on of the people at the table a copy of Once Upon A Time from Atlas Games as a late Christmas present so I have a feeling at the next game night, in a couple of weeks, we'll be playing that. :)

Re: Adding class level to check. Two different PHB rules?

This is one of those things that can be needlessly complicated if you try to extrapolate rules and not take them for face value. 8-) There exists in this game, attribute checks. Like lifting the statue, tracking goblins*, distance running to the next town, checking for traps*, etc. This is done as a...
