Re: Nostalgia, favorite moments with C&C – forum or in game

Also, Yggsburgh is definitely one of the great cities of gaming. You know the ones…whether running the game or playing it, you step foot in it and the city feels like a real place, you can see it so clearly.

Re: Nostalgia, favorite moments with C&C – forum or in game

Probably the first time playing the game, after raving about C&C for months. All I had was the original white box. I created a dungeon based loosely on the intro adventure in the old red box. Cracked open a bottle of Maker’s Mark and a good time was had by all. For a while my litmus test of an R...

Re: Do you allow the Assassin as a player character class?

To me, the assassin is part of old-school play. The kinds of players that cause inter-party conflict will do so regardless of what class they belong to.

Years ago, this one guy was playing a min-maxed killing machine, super-serious fighter. I threw a snow golem from an April issue of Dragon magazine at him and he was absolutely indignant that he had to fight it.

Re: Gaming Brew, Mead, or wine

Mmm, Hobgoblin is so good.

These days, I’m a fan of a Victorian-era cocktail for gaming – wine, port, a touch of rum or brandy, and seltzer in a tall glass. Tasty, and not too alcoholic. A DM has to keep his wits about him, after all.

Yep, me too. It will make the PCs eventually have to make some hard choices - especially since they can no longer just liquidate magic items for gold and buy other ones.

Re: D&D 5th Edition Discussion

And this is why I never got into Pathfinder. They took an already over-complex system and started adding from there. 4e stripped a lot of that away, only to build it right back up again. I’m hopeful that 5e maintains the level they’re starting with. And even if they don’t, I started my campaign tell...

Re: Played 5E last night...

Really digging it as well. And I agree, the smaller baseline makes the game much more “dicey.” Random chance and luck plays a great role, and I like that. I am looking forward to seeing how the power of the classes advances, especially since the base line only goes up to a +6 at 20th level, rather t...

Re: The Troll Lord product you'd like to see produced for C&

Pretty much 0% PDFs. Since I spend so much of my day in front of computer at work, the last thing I want is to have a computer in front of me while gaming. That’s also why I prefer console gaming to PC gaming, for that matter.

Re: Making weak monsters challenging for high level parties.

I think the biggest issue you have to deal with is hitting the PCs, and you’ve got some good ideas there. Another thing to look out for are those big area of effect spells – definitely focus missile fire on casters to disrupt fireballs, or make sure that the close quarters will mean collateral damag...

Hahahah! At least it’s not a sword of berserking.

It’s hard to tell from the picture, but it looks a whole lot like a reproduction of the sword from Conan the Barbarian.

Re: The Troll Lord product you'd like to see produced for C&

I would love to see a sword and planet sourcebook for C&C. It’s easy enough to use the CKG rules for lasers, but It’d be awesome to see some stuff inspired by the tales of Barsoom, Eric John Stark, and Almuric.

Re: Illusionists and Wizards and Sorcerers, oh my!

I handled that by scaling the difficulty of the check required (or conversely, the ease of disbelief). The greater the moving parts, the harder the check required, depending on the spell used. My biggest gripe with the Illusionist is getting them to stop trying to wring too much out of the vague spe...

Re: Illusionists and Wizards and Sorcerers, oh my!

I agree with Arduin. Illusion is a special type of magic. Its power isn’t necessarily found in the rules; it requires a great deal of player creativity. In the right hands, it’s way more flexible than regular wizardry. Illusionists in C&C are at LEAST as powerful as Wizards. More so in the hands...

Re: Codex Nordica

I quite like it. The book does a good job at balancing the flavor of the setting with basic C&C-isms (i.e., it feels like a Norse setting without being limiting to the game). It’s got a really nice, extensive introductory setting, which covers the culture, religion, and legends. I’ve certainly g...

I’ll second taking a break and being a player for a bit. Even if it’s just a handful of sessions, I find seeing someone else run the game can often be inspiring in and of itself. Also, sometimes switching games can help. Maybe dealing with some vampires and eldritch horrors instead of dragons and go...

Re: How often, how long, and how far

Almost exactly this. I try to be pretty militant about gaming twice a month, to keep momentum going. For a long time we were just once a month, but the problem with that is that it ended up being all too easy to end up skipping months. Life is way better since switching to the twice a month schedule...

Also on my list to get to eventually. I had this mad idea to do a one-shot and run with pregens all based on Star Wars characters, as filtered through the 40K universe. Right now it’s just D&D 5e. Really only have time for one game at a time these days. Alas. If you haven't played Warhammer 40K'...

Re: Racial Character Classes ???

I certainly have fond memories of race as class. It flies in the face of min-maxing, for one! One of the earliest character I can remember was Ralif Redhammer, the dwarf (amongst Fairblade the fighter and Shasak the Magic-User). I remember for a time there was talk of official rules for such for C&a...

Tough call, indeed. Yggsburgh is definitely up there. Such a wonderful city to adventure in.

I'm going to go with the original white box. It was rough and shields gave +11 to AC (heh!), but it's where the game began and what got me into C&C.

I'll agree, without magic, or some sort of quest to reforge the blade, I'd disallow it.

I’m reminded of the time a PC refused a magic item because it didn’t fit their exact build, and made grumpy.
