I agree that inflation has something to do with it but not this much. And Ptolus is a big friggin book but, after the World's Largest Dungeon it seems there are more and more high tag items coming out these days.

You'll also find that off the cuff adventures are easier than even AD&D was. I have run full sessions with no notes and just seeing what happens and there were no issues at all.
