Huh, did I miss something in the PHB? Could somebody point me to the page where it says that 1st level characters get full Hit Points? Because I can't find it myself, apparently. So far, I was under the impression that HP were rolled at 1st level.

Well, in the case of a spitting cobra, it would have been immediate and permanent blindness on a successful hit, not death, so that might as well be averted by a saving throw...think of the snake as a crawling poison trap.

<t>Well, as far as I see it, we did manage easily with the same amount of descriptions in the Basic Set and didn't mind "stacking" all the magical bonuses on top of each other because that was the obvious thing to do...so I'm not sure more clarification is really necessary. It's simply a consequence...

Can't really see a reason why not. The biggest difference to other classes would be the 3-tiered magic system of spell muss, that might take a little looking into.

There's still this pretty good article by Erin D. Smale about decontructing the Basic D&D classes, and fitting the XP tables to that. It gets 100% reversible results, except for the magic-user, which turns out to be too expensive, XP wise. Might have some good ideas, too.
