I don't have the Crystal Caste mats. I have a Chessex mat (the 34.5 x 48" size) and love it. I use it a lot, although haven't done much with the hex side.

I think this is a fun idea. It'd have to be a good sized dog to accommodate the armor that the knight would doubtless be wearing, but it might still be interesting. Great ideas for role playing indeed. Good job in letting him do it. I think you'll be pleased with the results.

I have to agree with this as well. The demi-human races have so many special abilities that make them in many ways more desirable than humans, that the 3rd prime really makes up for that.
