Re: Houserule question
I have considered meddling with the primes but resisted, figuring I did not have enough experience with the game to be sure of all repurcussions. (Also, I am trying to sell this game to my players and if I go meddling with the core mechanic, it looks bad!). As for 0 level spells; well it just depend...

Re: XP for Traps?
Sorry I don't quite get your exact meaning. Sad how? Sad the said classes can't always just use their dice roll for every trap or sad that they don't get XP fpr disarming/finding them? I will answer assuming you meant the latter. All my players began playing in systems that give no xp award for trap...

Re: XP for Traps?
I have no idea of the 3e treatment of such things. Personally I like to present a mix of traps. Some of which it will be obvious something fishy is going on but with a mechanism which can be figured out and avoided, or even turned to your advantage, through problem solving and clever play. I give xp...

Re: Oh for the love of the game!
Sounds like you have at least a player or two on board, although I understand if you choose not to tear a group on half due to friendships/not wanting to be a jerk about it.
Maybe invite the group around for a no strings attached, one shot C&C session?
Best of luck.

Re: Illusionist healing spells
I really think that's a weakness of the C&C conception of illusionist... that everything they do is fake. Once you start with that assumption, the class becomes a parody... the guy with no power. I'm not entirely sure how to overcome it, but starting from the assumption that your brain believes...

Re: Proportions of Classed Characters to Non-Class Character
I used to think I was mad and that I was the only one who derived a perverse pleasure from applying background campaign demographics my players would at the same time both never actually realise were in play but encounter every session! Cool.

wow, guns are not quite so commonplace in australia, luckily so maybe my reaction is skewed but no, if a guy brings out a gun at the table either he needs to lock it back up or I am out of there.

Re: Illusionist healing spells
Likewise, in a fantasy world, I can grant that a strong enough belief can alter reality. This is the biggest sticking point for me. Obviously, this is fantasy, so things can happen that are not logical. But putting healing spells aside for the moment, and talking about the overall design of the cla...

Re: Magic and Society
As with your previous posts on religion and the economy, this is very insightful and interesting. My personal assumptions about the world in terms of how many people get to be class characters are quite different, though. I usually go with between 2-5% of people having even a single level in a clas...

Re: The first split?
Why all the hate towards 3.x? If we should be hating any edition, it should be the 4th! I'm really not sure how this became about 3e or any other edition. I deliberately avoided judgemental statements about ANY edition in the OP and skimming back over the posts I hardly see a mention of 3e. To get ...

Yeah my upcoming campaign is set in an alternate, but familiar earth in 800 AD so his versions based off "real world" old religious and pagan folklore fit to a T.

I have yoinked them for my own upcoming campaign.

Re: Recommended modules?
Yes you can do it more or less on the fly. I am actually running a C&C module (Shadows of the Halfling Halls) for my 2E game right now so it works both ways. Didn't take any more preparation than usual really. As for good 2e modules I recommend; the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar Dungeons of Despa...

Re: Artemis Entreri C&C stats
What's all this 'class and a half' talk? Is it from the Castle Keeper's Guide (which I don't have?). Barring multi-class rules, Assassin can use all weapons and anyone can fight with two weapons in C&C... But someone tell me about this 'class and a half' thingie! :-O It is a multi-class option ...

Re: Illusionist healing spells
Why? They could use alchemy or witchcraft or fey magics. There's other ways to justify arcane healing than Necromancy. Personally, I have a harder time justifying a neco/healing spin than a palcebo spell. Ah, I should have said- "the only way I'd see it happening IMC is..." I am eagerly a...

Re: Illusionist healing spells
I simply cannot see an illusionist with healing magic. I can see them with buffing magic, such as aid, where the target gains the benefit of temporary hit points and bonuses, believing themselves to be greater than they actually are, their perceptions altered but reality left unchanged. Basically m...

Re: The first split?
The CKG isn't going to cause a split. The 4th print PHB is what's going to do that, because of the changes made to the Illusionist and Barbarian. I know I'm in the minority on this, but I believe with the 4th print PHB Castles & Crusades has jumped the shark. Though the Barbarian did need a bit...

Re: Skills - Do I have this right?
But if the barbarian tries to ride down an orc with his spear from horse back, no level. If the background suggested a barbarian from a horse nomad type of culture, I might allow half level as even in that culture, they would have people who would be their knight class (they'd get the full level bo...

I only play with the (Advanced ) Rules from the Castle Keepers Guide. Anyone who plays without them is only playing with 2/3 of the game! A much lesser version for sure! Still limitted rules for limited minds I guess. Maybe there are still people playing those (old) rules but then I guess there are...

The first split?
D&D has become extremely fragmented in segments of players who all favour different editions and versions of those editions. From what I gather, the CKG, as well as having alot of general gaming advice has vast quantities of "crunchy bits", which had hitherto been deliberately absent f...

Re: Yet Another Encumbrance System, Very Simple, Similar BFR
Yeah I agree. It ended up a simpler version of EV basically, rather than a true "item based" system. I swear I couldn't help myself. It began VERY simple in my head and migrated to "mostly simple" with designations before I could get pen to paper. I am an inveterate rules tinkere...

Yet Another Encumbrance System, Very Simple, Similar BFRPG
This is the Encumbrance system I am leaning toward for my next campaign. It borrows from the BFRPG alternatives I have seen around the web, is very quick and very simple, with a couple of little C&C twists. I mainly wanted much faster and simpler than the current EV system. Simple Encumbrance Sy...

Re: Why should I buy a sword, when a war hammer is better?
I believe Dwarves and hammers makes perfect sense because hammers are used more than picks in crafting (rather than mining) of stone and in metalwork. Need hammers for crushing stone, hammering pegs for splitting stone blocks and all the stonework done with chiselling of various kinds etc. Hence, Dw...

Re: What Games Do You ACTUALLY Play?
Currently DM a 2e homebrew campaign every second Sunday, going strong on 2 years now.
Also playing in a Dark Dungeons (retro clony, quite interesting) game every second Wednesday.
Planning my next C&C campaign to pick up when the Sunday game next suffers a TPK.
