Re: Alter Self
Same spell, new question. Can caster cast additional spells while in the altered form? The text of the spell says you can only change into something of the same creature type, which for gnomes would be humanoids I assume. If a gnome used alter self to take the form of a goblin, could they cast addit...

Re: Alter Self
Thank you Rigon and all, you've taken a good deal of the fuzziness out of the equation. I can see that ruling clearing up the majority of issues and I'll happily adjudicate anything that remains grey as it comes up.

Alter Self
Regarding the spell Alter Self, part of the text reads: "...the caster also gains extraordinary special attacks and qualities, such as darkvision, low-light vision and so on. The caster does not gain any supernatural abilities though." Does M&T differentiate between "extraordinary...

Re: D&D Actual-Play Podcasts Worth Listening To
I've listened to these multiple times since they've come out. Great stuff! Made me realize that 4e can actually be a mediocre game if you have a fantastic DM :) Point of fact, I'm running my players through the second series adventure, the one with the tower and the ruins beneath, reflavored as a va...

Re: How much is a lot in terms of gold?
My players are level 11 and have around 115k gold socked away in their stronghold. They've put over 100k into building the stronghold. Additionally, they have around 60k in minor magic items they don't take with them everywhere. All told they have close to 300k in cash and investments. This is from ...

Re: d100 roll under
I want to thank everyone again for giving me all these options to explore. I had no idea most of these were out there. For obvious reasons, I'm going to start with the freebies and then check out the used rack at my FLGS. Once again the TLG community comes through!

Re: d100 roll under
Thanks for all the input guys. I took a look at GORE and Caosium BRP, both way more complicated than I was looking for. I don't suppose there are any d100 rules lite systems? I was thinking I'd find something simple like, "roll under your skill and you succeed". No opposed rolls or stats n...

Can anyone recommend any systems that are d100 roll under? I'm looking to check out how the mechanic handles modifiers and opposed rolls in different systems.

Re: Help with a new game
In my current campaign that's about to wrap up I'm absolutely giving experience for treasure. It's the most significant source of experience the players have. In the new campaign there is to be no experience awarded at all, only levels. See any one of my previous posts for clarification

Re: Help with a new game
Koralas, Simply do not grant XP for superfluous or wanton death and destruction. Build in encounters that require interaction with the NPC's, especially in cases that would raise a moral dilemma, and without the non-violent interaction, the successful completion of the adventure would be impossible....

Re: Help with a new game
SavevsFail, We're doing a sandbox style campaign right now. My players are free to go where ever they want and do whatever they want. I spent about three months planning a total of 16 locations with combat encounters and another 8 with just puzzles or interactions. So far they've gone to around 20 l...

Re: Help with a new game
Dead Horse, I'm not sure why you think my method would present too fast of a progression. If I gave the impression that a mission would take a single session that was not my intent. Many published adventures are similar to what I would term a "mission" and you can expect to gain one or two...

Re: Help with a new game
Relaxo, Good points. The thing is, I really don't want to track experience at all. I want to give my players an objective with a reward for success. Go here, get this thing, and you level up. Make it back safely and you level up again and get treasure. I think this is the simplest way I can keep my ...

Help with a new game
Greetings, My campaign will be wrapping up around the first of the year and I'm beginning to plan my next move. One of the things I'd like to happen with this next game is to get the players to attempt not to resolve every situation with combat. The principle way I would like to accomplish this is t...

Re: I didn't kill my player's characters, but they did die..
I talked to the player who disliked how it went down yesterday. Turns out he's never had a DM put him a group up against something they weren't supposed to be able to defeat. He admitted to remembering me explaining that such would be the case in this game, but I guess it didn't sink in until it hap...

Re: I didn't kill my player's characters, but they did die..
I can't decide if we're going to continue playing C&C right away or give it a switch. This campaign has been going on for over a year and if we hit the pause button there's a shiny new Paranoia book sitting on my self. One Paranoia mission and my players will be glad that at least in C&C you...

Re: I didn't kill my player's characters, but they did die..

Re: I didn't kill my player's characters, but they did die..
I agree on all counts. I knew that this particular player would not want to die, and indeed if the dragon defeated them he would have left them in an easily escapable jail cell with no gear, but alive. Once the wand was broken though I didn't feel like I could have them survive without telling them ...

I didn't kill my player's characters, but they did die...
Thursdays I presided over my first total party kill. They started the session a man down, their cleric, then proceeded to enter the lair of a very old dragon. Now, admittedly, they didn't know it was a dragon lair to begin with, but it became obvious once they saw the dragon. It spoke with them, dem...

Handwaved encumberance...
I'm curious as to what people mean when they say they handwave encumberance. For example, I tell my player they can carry three weapons, one suit of armor (worn), two days worth of food, their class gear, and up to 500 coins. Anything beyond that they need to let me know what it is and how they are ...

Thanks guys. The players certainly are resourceful, as you will see in the upcoming sessions. We've played six sessions so far, and most had more going on than this first one. I really think they help me keep my game organized by forcing me to go over my notes and allowing me to give names to things left unnamed du...

Re: Magic house rules
Just thought I'd let you all know, since you contributed so much to the discussion, that I did some more testing earlier this evening with the wizard character's player. It looks like 10+spell level+target's hd makes for a more fair target number than the spell costs that I had come up with. It's a ...

Re: Magic house rules
I do think if you are going to count NPC or monster HD into how hard it is to cast on something then you would need to also count the spell level of the caster. If you give a 10 HD monster a +10 to resist then I think a 10th caster should get a +10 to effect. A simple system would be to award a + o...
