Re: What boardgame(s) are you playing?

I had my wife watch the Pandemic episode of Tabletop, which I've played a couple of times. She agreed it'd be a good one for us to get, so hopefully that'll be an end-of-year addition to our collection. Ticket to Ride and Battlelore have been our go-to games of late, but yesterday we pulled out Elfe...

Re: Character Death in your games...

As I see it, there was a shift away from dungeon crawling and toward more epic story telling and plot lines. This, except for the epic part. I didn't see a rise in games that I thought of as epic, but there was a big rise in the idea that the random death of a character ruined the story. I hate los...

I can't argue with Nightstorm's facts, but I have trouble browsing spells because they're listed alphabetically instead of grouped by class and level. :)

Re: True Names?

When drow first popped up as an official PC race in AD&D, a friend and I both created drow characters. We had our cool PC names (both from Dr Who in this case), but the DM loved his expansive background info on the Vault and insisted on giving us proper drow names as well. Of course, no one would ha...

Re: Game of Thrones Books

But, be forewarned: lots of violence. Lots of sex. Lots of cruelty. Lots of characters being killed off in ways few other authors would ever dare. It amuses me that most North American readers rag on the sex stuff (Both the book and the TV program.) but never really comment on the many horrible dea...

Kobolds, spiced up with courage, cunning, and a dash of heroes. I like giving them a giant lizards as steeds. One of the first adventures I created had the PCs rooting out a kobold warren. The kobold leader was a 4th level fighter with gauntlets of ogre power and a +1 sword. He didn't run away when ...

Re: If a Wizard loses his spellbook...

If one considers the old arguement of the wizard being overly powerful, especially at higher levels, one should also consider that the weakness of the wizard is the vulnerability of their spellbook. The backstory for one of my characters included him stealing a wizard's more powerful spellbooks and...

And instead of carrying a massive tome, you could carry a few much smaller books (the size of a standard RPG hardback, if I recall correctly).

Travelling spellbooks. The best thing in the UA. They made life so much easier, provided you had a secure location for the originals.

Re: The 30 Greatest D&D Adventures of All Time

This thread has me curious what people are using as a standard for greatness. I've only played a few of the classics: Slavers, Hommlet, Temple of Elemental Evil, Tomb of Horrors. And I've dabbled in some others (probably several) without knowing it: I'm pretty sure I had a character make a few solo ...

Re: Just call them Feats already...

Thinking back to the early '80s, one of my first characters received a +1 damage vs goblins, but lost his +1 dex bonus to AC when facing goblins. (He had hatred issues.) I never thought to call it anything.

Looks like it will be very hard to do what I hoped... make a replica of the Winchester House. Alas, I will keep looking. Don't despair. Rumor has it they're working on an Escher add-on module for Sketchup that should make projects like WH a snap. (They've already missed two release dates, but engin...

I was good with that until I picked up the original Ravenloft. While 2D, the map layout gave a good feel for the 3rd D, which provided a better anchor for my descriptions.

Bump. I'm a little surprised this is the only thread I found mentioning Sketchup. Has anyone used it to build dungeons? I'm not one how likes maps and minis on the table, but this has me intrigued. I've built PCs' strongholds in AutoCAD many years ago, and for the same effort I think I could bang ou...

Almost all my early gaming was as GM. When I started playing in college, my first character was snuffed out by a black pudding. Poor thief. The only reason he ran into the pudding was because the party was incapable of making forward progress, so I took matters into my own hands and led the way. (St...

Chris Perkins is the Creative Director for D&D over at WotC. I think that's his title anyhow, or the equivilant. There is a case where I rule an arrow's magic is depleted on a hit or miss. Taking a little inspiration from WFRP, I have the swarming arrow. Upon leaving the bow, it splits into two or three or four arrows. (I love these things, but they're always found individually.)

Lots of good memories therein. So true, but that's all that's there for me. I'd much rather have something like C&C, which has the same feel but a much more streamlined implementation. I'd like a catalog that provides a very short description of each product.
