Re: Experience points are hurting my brain : O

Or if you have sufficient attention to detail, you can use my highly analytical approach: "I think that adventure was good for, oh, 1,000 XP each." ;)

Re: Paladin vs Knight

Paladin. I love the moral tightrope they must sometimes walk. (of course several times there were 1ed UA Knights (Cavaliers?) I remember looking forward to playing a paladin in an upcoming campaign, but the 1ed UA came out right before we started the campaign, and the paladin became a subclass of th...

Yikes! Would someone actually copy an editor? :o
You'd be amazed. Moral fiber is sorely lacking in the world these days.

I enjoy them both as player and, when I'm in the zone, GM. But they require a GM that's good at both improv and making a setting feel alive without getting lost in the details.

So yeah, that's a cool idea. Maybe combine the two, so wizard, rogue and cleric do 1d6 with all weapons, and all the fighter types do 1d8... simple. (+ mods, of course) I've heard of the hit die for damage die approach before, but thought it caused too much disparity among classes, basically magnif...

Re: Role play, or lack of it!

while others want death and dismemberment and find role-playing a tad on the boring side I don't find death/dismemberment and roleplaying to be mutually exclusive. Roleplaying is what I love. Combat-heavy or combat-light, I'm good either way. I do, however, get very frustrated with groups that see ...

Whip, because no one ever uses one. At least, for my current character idea, that's my favorite. I had an AD&D character proficient in whip and club. Then there was the street urchin proficient in knife and trident, but that's a long story. ;) Historically I've leaned toward smaller weapons. I like...

There's a fair share of bare-chested male barbarian types represented in the genre, so it goes both ways. In the PH there's one male barbarian showing his abs. Compare that with about half the females going the slinky/impractical route. The only reason I haven't purchased the new landscape screens ...

Speaking of fantasy artwork and women, Jim Hines had a recent blog post in which he tried to duplicate the poses from several fantasy novel covers, starting with one of his own.

It's just as well he refused to blog his own butt crack.

When I'm not familiar with something, I find it best to heed "not safe for work" warnings. (I learned that the hard way, but quickly. And my therapist says I'm mostly recovered.)

D&D Actual-Play Podcasts Worth Listening To

A few years ago WOTC set up a gaming session with Jerry Holkins, Mike Krahulik (Penny Arcade) and Scott Kurtz (PVP) to showcase D&D 4ed. This accomplished two things: convinced me I had no interested in 4ed, and made me laugh out loud many, many times. And the artwork that went with each podcast was...

Re: What boardgame(s) are you playing?

I got in a bunch of gaming over Christmas. I taught: Runebound, BattleLore, Ticket to Ride, and Titan: the Arena. (This was my first time to play Runebound with more than two, and as I feared, four players is way too slow.) New to me: Bazaar, Power Grid, Dominion, Scotland Yard, and Pandemic (which ...
